Deine VS

Rookie
Tsitsipas was good, but Federer was nowhere near his level from last AO. It was his match to lose. And all it take is solid performance from Tsitsipas.

Yep.

And I got roasted for calling it.

Well, yes and no. This is a declined Fed that was beaten, a true changing of the guard will happen when Djokovic gets beaten (minus extenuating circumstances ala Chung) by a young gun like Stefanos. Unfortunately, decent players can beat Fed these days, they don’t have to play amazingly well. They need another level or three for Djokovic.

Can’t agree with you on Tsitsipas, has easily as much talent as any of the other young players that I can see and a decent tactical brain to match. If you want overhyped, take a look at Denis...

Wait, what? Dennis won a set off Djokovic yesterday!!

Tsitsipas has progressed steadily without nearly as much of the hype as Denis. So i wouldn't say he's overhyped. Still, he wouldn't have got close to peak Fedr today.

We now need Zedman to take out Raonic and this tournament will certainly show progress from the next gen.

Always beware the young gun in a slam R16, even when GOAT on a favorite court...Wimby’01 all over again. History repetes on fedr like a pizza with extra onions and pepperers.

Tsits with a great game plan and the skill set and wheels to pull it off...get in, get in, get in! Congrats!

Another nextgen player that you identified approx. 4-5 years ahead of the rest of us.

Its been too long since a young player with this kind of heart and no fear has made a dent at the Slams
Im really happy Fish`n`Chipas has all that Greek support in Melbourne after all they pioneered the fish and chips
take aways and variety in cuisine Australia lacked so much after the ww2.
Bags must have been watching this match knowing exactly the support he had there locally.
I would love to see Meds do the same to Nole, actually Tities and Meds would be a dream final knowing their recent history

Shame I couldn’t see the match.

Obviously disappointed by the result, but if he was going to lose to anyone Tsitspas would have been my choice.

Let’s hope he builds on this and bumps Rafa along the way.

Nah not seeing double digit. But a great career. So early to say though. A lot of potential, and still a diamond in the rough. A LOT of upside. Where will he take it?

I see him having a better career than Zverev. His FH is so much better than Zverev's. That's huge. Both are still young so I could be totally wrong, but what I saw from Tsitsipas tonight, and at slam level in a BO5 was more impressive than anything I've seen from Zverev.

Yep. Future is not quite here yet, Fed at 37 is at least a rank or two more vulnerable to being beaten by the youngsters. I think we’ve all said it, next 1 or 2 years is Djokovic’s opportunity to hoover slams and break Fed’s record.
In other words, Djokovic continues to have this opportunity after already having it for the past 5 years.

His composure under pressure was very impressive. Watching Zverev the other night he was in fear when 2 sets up against Chardy.

Agree wholeheartedly. Early to make the call, but Stefanos has the skills and the athleticism.

Still a Shapo believer. These guys are young and we've grown impatient in frustration.

Tsitsi's rise has been RAPID.
They played an epick Wimby junior SF with Shapo edging Tsits. Shapo shot up more quickly but Tsits has been the steadier since fall of 2017. He has a great camp around him while Shapo has floundered a bit in that department. I also favor Tsits due to the height advantage that is going to let his serve grow even more potent. Just toss the damn ball right!

Next big rule change...hit the first toss or it’s a fault.

Oh come on George!!! That Djoko match yesterday was about as one sided a 4 set match as you will see. Shapo has a long way to go, as does Tsitsipas, but i’d rather be Tsitsipas right now and people are still saying he’s overhyped? Looking good to me...

It would be horrible because RBA is 30 and has already played 3 five set matches.

There's no excusing it. Tsitsi should NOT lose to RBA.

that's why I said if RBA is tired , it'd be a horrible loss.

If he manages to find his energy, then it won't.

Yeah I’ve kinda checked out of this slam now. Really can’t believe the trash I just witnessed after seeing his level on Friday.
It sucks, but can't expect too much anymore as old as he is. I never thought he would win here anyway. It would've been nice to see him get further yeah. I'm going to keep watching. I was watching before Federer and I'll be watching after he's gone. He's still the GOAT and I'm glad to have witnessed it all along the way.

Sorry, Mate. (Pat Rafter disagrees.)

Federer: ‘I lost to a better player who was playing well tonight.

break points hurt

thought he played well too

younger guy stayed calm, which can be easier for younger guys, less pressure, Fed said

Yeah, that's big too. Zverev just defaults to a defensive game when he's under pressure, and he doesn't have the defensive skills to pull it off. He retreats further behind the baseline and starts leaking errors off the FH in particular.

Rotterdam 2018 is the last time that Roger looked like Roger.

Idk what the hell happened between Rotterdam and IW last year, but it’s was obvious to me anyway.
As I said elsewhere, reaching No.1 was his last great goal after managing to win Slams again. Now he can say whatever he wants, but being the best is no longer the priority in his life.

just imagine when he improves his service balance which tends to end up hard to his left!
Ive been watching and loving his spirit 3 years ago as well and saw mainly claycourt matches
where he was unreal but still wonder why no one has corrected this hiccup esp. on the ad court.

felt Fed's intensity, which is all-world, dipped enough in the third to make things a little easier on Steph...age is a factor no doubt, but it's subtle

good match but Tiafoe ridiculous raw power and magic hands made my day - sure the better match of those two..-- anyway - im happy young boys take out the old gard slowly! its time for a change

Confidence declines as well... Timing is complex, anything being off could cause it to go awry. We should accept the man is quite fallible.

it was the greatest FH at his peak. and still so good in 2017/early 2018.
what confidence issues ?
just won Hopman cup, winning every set, without getting broken (in singles)
won 3 matches in straights here at the AO.

agassi was crunching groundstrokes (FH and BH) when old.
fed can atleast get the act together for FH - to hit it with authority.
don't care that much about topspin/flat BH. slice BH can cover for quite a bit.

return/movement/passing shots declining are all perfectly understandable.
but for God's sake, hit that damn FH !
