Yonex EZONE (2018)

Anyone have feedback of switching from the previous gen sv vcore 98 to the ezone 98?

I use a soft 17g poly in it but curiois about the transitiom experience. My other option being intrigued is finding some DR 98's off ****

Anyone played with the 98 plus using volk cyclone 17? Just want to hear some feedback. Loving the frame so far, my first ever extended frame. Been reading that majority don't like the update, but I've tried the DR before committing to the ezone because to me it has better stability feeling, the DR felt flexy floppy, I usually play with frames that are 21mm or less, but I've realized I have to let go of my high school years so I made the switch from the Vcore pro 97 330. Currently have one with Yonex Poly tour spin 1.25 and the other with Signum pro yellow jacket, both at 50/48. Thinking of stringing the cyclone at 46/44

I was using the SV 98 prior to currently using the Ezone 98. Easy switch. They swing very similarly.
Launch angle is slightly higher w Ezone with more spin. Same pros and cons however with each racquet. Ezone feels a touch firmer but not unpleasant.
I string Hyper G at 48.

I haven't tried the lighter Ezone 98 (285), but hopefully, there is another member who can provide feedback. The specs certainly look interesting. I would classify it as lite, flexible & midsize. There are not too many sticks out there like that. My guess it will be more manuverable than the 305g version, and possibly less comfortable. Not sure though. In my Saturday morning doubles group, we have someone using a Head Graphine Touch Radical S, which is even more flexible. He loves it and plays great. A solid 4.0 player in his early 60's. But if you have a sensitive elbow, I would choose the Ezone over the Vcore.

Thank you for your help.

What I have read, ezone 98 has RA - 63 and VCore 98 has RA- 65, but in a lot of reviews is conclusion that VCore seems less stiff than ezone 98.

What do you think about it?

Having owned and hit both I would say the Vcore definitely feels less stiff. The Ezone has more stiffness (not uncomfortable) and more pop though. Vcore softer with a tad more spin but less power. The Ezone feels way more solid.

I wouldn't make too much of RA numbers that close. The Vcore def feels less firm than the Ezone.
At the same tension, same string, the VCore plays more plush pretty much over the entire stringbed than the EZone.
EZone does offer a little more zip though.

Good to know, im debating on finding an older DR98 or newer Ezone 98 and stringing it up with my 17g soft poly

Just played another 3 hours last night with the EZONE 98, I think it's official, I'm going to sell my DRs... or at least one haha (I know I sound like a broken record I'm just excited to be playing with a new frame :p). There is more resonance to this stick, esp when you're getting any shots off center — but with the DR, while buttery smooth, there's a lack of feel. The EZONE is definitely more of a point and shoot, and for some reason my backhand slice is amazing with it. I switched back to the DR for about 25 minutes and it's funny, even though it's spec'ed the same, it cuts through the air differently than I remember. But it is oh so plush... which makes it very string sensitive I found.

Interesting.... I've found the EZONE to be more string sensitive than the DR98. I used PolyTour Pro 120 at 45 lbs in the DR98 and that does not feel good in the EZONE 98. I'm using PolyTour Fire in my EZONE 98.

I read your post earlier about that, have a packet lying around I might put in. You had it in a little lower right, #48?

45 lbs. It's the only set up so far that softens the upper hoop. Lux Element and PolyTour Air isn't bad, either. PolyTour Strike, PolyTour Pro, PolyTour Spin are a no-go. I previously used PolyTour Pro in my DR98 at 45 lbs.

Question for guys that have played both the DR100 and the latest Ezone 100. I own a DR100 as one of my two main racquets and i wonder if it is worth upgrading to the latest model. A short comparison between the two when it comes to power/maneuverability? I've read some opinions before but some more are welcome!

What do you think about it?

I have demo'd both racquets and thought the Ezone was more comfortable, but string may have played a role. The VCore 98 (305g) was literally brand new when I demo'd it, and had a full bed of Rexis string. Unfortunately, I don't remember the string the Ezone 98 (305g) had on it, but it was definitely a multifilament, and had much more usage on it, so the tension was lower.

Your best bet is to follow the comments of those who have spent more time with these great sticks. No wrong answer as they are both good. I actually think the Vcore Pro 97 (310) is the closest racquet to the beloved DR 98.

I played a year with the DR100 before going to the DR98 and then EZONE 98. I've briefly hit with the EZONE 100, but I can't give you any good opinions on it. It's been quite a while. All I remember is that I didn't like the strings in the demo. And it had a similar upper-hoop-harshness that the EZONE 98 has as well.

I have the EZone 98, and it's definitely less muted than the DR98. It has more feedback, the feel is crisper without being uncomfortable. After playing a couple of months with it, I prefer it much more to the DR 98. Every time I have tired to hit the DR 98 since getting accustomed with the EZone 98, I say to myself I prefer the feel and feedback of the EZone 98. It's hard to describe, but I would say it has a firm, muted feel as opposed to a soft muted feel.

I think this is the most useful description so far in this entire thread.

The one thing that puts my off the Ezone is the reported stiffness, has anyone found it stiff but managed to overcome it with their set up? I do like the plus length version of this racket but have moved back to standard length now.

I mentioned this in one of the earlier posts... but I found PolyTour Fire 45 to make the upper-hoop stiffness more bearable.

'More bearable' does not sound good though! Maybe not worth the risk, they are selling for next to nothing second hand in the UK but maybe there is a reason!
I moved to the VCORE 98 since with similar strings, and this frame plays more friendly imho. I played the EZONE for a year and the feel wasn’t ever really “improved”.

Ha! I moved to the VCORE 98 when it came out... now I'm back to the EZONE. I like it more. I had a great honeymoon period with the VCORE 98, though. Then my wrist started hurting. (correlation<>causation )

Well, for me, it's a good thing. There's a lot to like about the racquet. The stiffer upper hoop is not that great of a feeling. However, it's not so apparent with Fire for me. With Poly Tour Pro, I felt it on more shots. With Fire, I feel it only on mis-hits. I get more power and stability compared to the DR98 that I moved from.

No! I just couldn’t gel with the EZONE. I really wanted to like that frame but never could. Sad times. I can’t ever leave Yonex though.

I just purchased the Ezone 98 (310).
I also have the DR 98 (305).

There's no question the DR is more 'plush' ... a more comfortable strike.

But now I understand what plush really means, which is 'blurred' ... the feel of the shot is perhaps being more averaged across the face while the newer, non-DR, gives more feedback, it's more 'crisp'... at the cost of a bit of a heavier swing, a little longer moment of inertia?, a difference in balance?, but certainly a bit more plow through...the ball takes off a little more for the same effort.

To attempt an analogy:
• the swing effort is something like the difference between lifting 5lbs with your strong hand vs. weak hand.
• the swing comfort (the plushness) is something like picking up the bristle end of a hair brush with or without wearing a latex glove - the DR with the glove, the feedback is less detailed (which could be thought of as imprecise, vague, or 'blurred' to use a vision analogy).

To me that seems like a good price to pay if you have some good groundstrokes (4.5 and up?).

I'm actually going to use both as I can play lefty at 3.0-3.5 and righty at 4.0-4.5. (I purposely learned lefty to allow myself lots more options to play at 3.0-4.0 as I feel I may get to 5.0 in perhaps a year which of course will reduce my playing options.)

So I'll try using the DR for lower, rec level play ... left handed and perhaps righty-doubles, and the eZone for singles.

The DR seems to be a fantastic racket for beginners to 4.0.
The newer, non-DR, Ezone 98 seems better for someone who wants to put the ball within a square yard box.

The DR is a super super racket for learning ... get one on ****, here, or such ... it's more recreation oriented.
The newer, non-DR, Ezone 98 is more performance oriented.
Have you or has anyone else leaded their Ezone up? Has it made it more comfortable? I am leading my DR and PS rackets up to around 350g strung now and enjoying the stability and ploughthrough, just wondering if it has had a good effect on the Ezone?

I've leaded it. Played around with placement. I like 2 and 10. It adds good power, but gets a little metalicky. I currently play with it in stock form.

thanks, read through the thread and barely any mention of customization! i guess the weight it up crowd has really abandoned this racket, as would have thought this stick would be great to adding weight to

You must have hulk strength forearms.
Haha why do you say that? I have only just started weighting up my rackets but do find otherwise I get pushed around by the bigger hitters at my club. I don't know how people can play low weight and still hit a really heavy ball and dominate points, credit to them but I get sick of being pushed around, so lead reverses that for me!

Leather grip, tourna Power cap and 1g at 3/9 for me. With strings, overgrip and rubber band dampener, plays right around 350g static.

What is it about the DR, one of the most beloved racquets in Yonex's lineup in recent years, that makes you consider it "recreation oriented"?

I stated my reason - the eZone has more feedback, which a lower level player may not need as much as they're not going for precision as would a higher level player - so I'm not sure what you're asking.

In fact, I'll give you a specific example I found out yesterday ... I can serve at an angle with the eZone I could not with DR 98 because of the eZone feedback.

But even more importantly, why do you hear 'recreation oriented' as bad. I love the DR 98 and as I continue to improve I believe I'll be using the eZone in matches.

I was just asking about your opinion on the DR and the category into which you put it. No need to take it personal. The point of forums like this is to share opinions and have healthy debates.

I would only offer that that the Pure Drive is the worst in terms of "feedback" (this is a subject thing so no way to quantify) and yet the number of pros using it seems to suggest it doesn't matter.
If you attribute being able to execute certain shots as a result of the feedback from one frame versus another, then that's awesome.

Sir, in a word, nonsense.

What is it about my posts, sone of the most beloved in Tennis Warehouse's lineup in recent weeks, that makes you consider it as a jab to Yonex?

No need to take this personal as you took my post as a personal attack on Yonex.

Sheesh.

Regarding the harshness in the top of the hoop of the DR98, I have found a simple solution for my DR98 that might work for the the Ezone 98 as well. After I restring I let the racquet sit for 24 hours. Then I take 3 fingers and stretch the top 3 or 4 crosses which frees up the mains in that area. Its plays beautifully and the harshness is gone. This removes the only flaw in the DR98. It’s not scientific but it works for me, might be worth a shot for you guys.

45 lbs. It's the only set up so far that softens the upper hoop. Lux Element and PolyTour Air isn't bad, either. PolyTour Strike, PolyTour Pro, PolyTour Spin are a no-go. I previously used PolyTour Pro in my DR98 at 45 lbs.
Finally got around to hit with Fire in a FB at #48 (I've only hit it as a hybrid) — I was very surprised! I was worried considering the packaging had it labelled on the far end of the 'hard' spectrum, but you were right, somehow it softens that upper hoop. Had a decent amount of spin for a round poly too. Comfort, crisp and felt much more connected than YPTP which feels too plasticky for me. Hopefully this honeymoon period will continue!

I just strung mine w/ LXN Smart... it's good for the first few days. Then kinda drops off. I still think Fire is the best balance of playability and tension maintenance. YPTP is VERY plasticky in the EZONE, but AWESOME in the DR.

Played another 2hrs with Fire today. Woah mama. If it keeps going like this I might have to buy a reel... just when I wanted to not buy any more strings! How many hours do you usually get before you cut them out/dead?

I find they don't really drop off that much. They last as a deadish feeling string for 10-12 hours. More as a cross. HMU if you want to make a trade. I've got a lot left on my reel.

Hi folks,
After playing Angell TC 97 18x20 for half a year and also tried many other different racquets, the new ezone 98 is my go to racquet!!
I played TT100p, ezone DR 98 & 100, TC95, TC100, Beast 100, Head PC 600, PT 630, pure control (295g), pure aero......too many...
New Ezone 98 has the same playability as my TC97, but even more forgiving especially on the defensive side, I blocked fast balls back more easily with the Ezone 98,
Serve is much better with the new Ezone 98, i think may be 30% faster than TC97...
The score of Ezone 98 from TW review is not fair, the new Ezone 98 is Great! I tried 4g lead tape at 12 but didnt feel right, change to 2g@10 and 2g@2, it was very great, I didnt feel any discomfort, stiff feel in upper hood was similar to other racquets, I think the lead tape really help solving this ...
I suggest anyone like dr 98 should at least demo the Ezone 98 first...although dr98 has the addictive plush feel, the extra pop from Ezone 98 really help on serve and groundstrokes, and the Ezone 98 feels super stable for me!

Conclusion: Ezone 98 is a powerful but not too powerful control racquet, great feel after putting lead @10&2 ( I use babolat tung tape), great serve, very stable you can feel it by just holding on hand, light weight, rooms for customization....overall it's a very underrated racquet.....i am very happy to find this treasure

I concur Zero ... now I can conquer.

After a month with the racket I'm reiterating how great the eZone is.

I was quite reluctant to move away from the DR98 as it was so 'comfy' but now it's harder to hit the DR98 ... so it's for sale ... 4 1/4 ... 8/10 condition. New 58lb. NXT.

Furthermore, I can now play left-handed in part because I don't have to swing as hard.

I'll say I'm 50% as good lefty (groundstrokes); 25% as strong with serve.
