How the hell did Arsenal manage to do that? Barcelona were so much better then them (especially in the first half, where I think they had like 70% of the possession) it wasn't even funny. What a match. Ref sucked though, Fabregas's booking was undeserved (he got the ball first, perfectly clean tackle in my book) and the penalty he got was another weak decision.

Yeah, honestly wtf, how could he give a red card to Puyol? At most, that was a yellow card. He didn't even tackle him. I mean, they get the PK anyways!

So referee's are allowed to give penalties against Barcelona now. Nice to see they've changed the rules from last year! :)

^^^ Fabregas played for the pen, but Puyol went in clumsy... Barca keeper wasn't so great either on Walcott goal (and why didn't Wenger play him earlier?)... not that Almunia covered himself in glory in the 2nd half...

Even with different central defense, if Barca don't thrash Arsenal in 2nd leg at home, I will be amazed!... for 30 mins or so in the 1st half last night, Barca were a class apart... just outrageously good.

Anyway, there's a host of possible causes... playing of course... running related (as in joging)... sitting at the computer for too long... lugging/carrying/hauling/lifting/generally being a cart-horse for a young family (any blokes out there with young kids will know this one! :))... but for one thing, in future I'm definitely going to doing a bit more of this, I think:

I really think this one is there for the taking, teams play Man Utd on reputation alone and give them far too much respect. Games like these are usually very tentative and calculated, but this is the time to spring a surprise on Man Utd and Ancelotti needs to send the team out to dominate and deal a huge mental blow to Man Utd.

If Man Utd win it they will be 4 points clear and it will be over for another year, sitting back and losing to a single goal is something Chelsea can't afford to do.

Chelsea will win easy I'm certain. That is if there aren't any dodgy decisions or own goals like what happened to Arsenal there.

As for City apparently Mancini is going to employ the same gameplan against Burnley that he did last week. can't say I'm looking forward to it hopefully we can pull out a win.

Mongish conspiracy theories ftl, turns out the officials still favour rubles.

One penalty each not given.
One offside goal, and one goal put in off the arm.

There were wrong decisions, but both teams suffered the same.

Ultimately it was Malouda's powerful run and Joe Cole's little flick that was the difference :)

I'd rather have Newcastle up than Hull, Bolton, and Wigan. It's actually a great away day to attend and they have good supporters.

I honestly can't believe what I just saw. Messi......he's football's answer to Federer x 10. His performance was out of this world. If someone says that Argentina aren't among the favorites for South Africa, they should be banned from watching sport.

C'mon Inter!!

Barcelona were just rolling around all night long, they're so up themselves that they get disgusted whenever anyone tries to tackle them.

At one stage I thought they were having a little competition between themselves to see who could do the most number of rolls to buy a free kick. Hopefully Jose will come up with another of his great performances to stick it up them.

Ross K

Okay, Messi was a genius... but was it really such a great surprise?...

Arsenal were minus key players - and didn't have adequate replacements (exhibit A: Sylvestre anybody? ); tactically Barca were always going to tighten up the flow of ball to Walcott after the 1st leg; and across the board, Barca have world class players playing at their peak, whilst Arsenal had a lot of crocks and, er, Bentner :???:...

Barca are an outstanding team imo... but the qsn is now, how will they fare against Inter?

They have a lot of brilliant forwards but with their manager they will go nowhere. Barcelona are stacked with talent everywhere on the pitch and trained from the academy level to play the way they do.

The Inter match will be awesome though Barca were fairly dominant over the two matches they played in the group stages. United unfortunately have the best chance to beat them out of the teams remaining.

Did u actually watch the whole game, not just the goals? He wasn't that great, yes he scored 4 goals but he also lost the ball plenty of times and hits the ground WAY to much. He shoots when he should pass to an open team mate way to much as well!! He is great don't get me wrong but he still needs to improve. If you watch him during the league he dissappears alot during a match and is too gready. He holds on to the ball to much. If he wasnt on Barca they would still be a great team. The team as a whole is the really great. He is not NO Where that good for Argentina, reason because Argentina is not Barca.

Yeah I have to agree with all of that, he wasn't the only Barcelona playing diving around though. Busquets who plays a sort of anchor role was falling about, can you imagine the top players in that position doing something like that? Essien, De Rossi etc..

I also take your point about not liking to pass, Bojan had a shot half way through the second half and I think it was the first shot taken by a Barcelona player other than Messi.

I don't fancy Argentina to do much in South Africa either, they are probably in a similar position to England are in that a semi final appearance would be a good result for them.

Yes he was, except for falling to the ground too easily a couple of times - which usually happened after he already beat 3-4 Arsenal players - he was exceptional all over the pitch. Always was dangerous whenever he got the ball whether it was with his dribbling or his passing or his shooting. Off the ball there was always pressure from he and Pedro to stop Arsenal from being able to build up play.

Has to be best player in the world right now ahead of Ronaldo though it's definitely close.

Agreed on the Argentina point though it's impossible for him to be the same player there when his team doesn't have 70% possession every game and there's no dominant midfield and an awful manager to add on top of it.

I think that's one of the biggest secrets to their success, no doubt. They seem to have about 70% of possession whoever it is they play, this time last year it was Chelsea they were playing and even though our players were twice the size as theirs in some cases they always managed to get the ball back.

Tomorrow should be interesting with Man Utd v Bayern Munich, Barcelona were always likely to beat Arsenal but tomorrow's tie is alot less certain. Hopefully Man Utd can come through it though to fly the flag for England (plus another 2-3 matches in Europe would probably hurt them in the Premier League ;))

If Messi holds onto the ball too much then you could say the same for Zidane, Figo, Ronaldinho, Maradona... all the greats of the game.

Players like Messi are always on the ball because their teammates want the ball with them. The more they're on the ball, the more they can create.

Oh deary me, two offside goals that may haunt United's season. The one that got Bayern through against Fiorentina and the one that knocked them from the top of the league.

I can't believe I missed it. Would've definately brought my mood up after a ****ty match yesterday.

That's amazing though. I love Messi! Way to make up for that below average performance last game.

What's the story with Man U?

I only saw highlights of last night's match but anyway... Man U losing to Bayern? ...

Hmm, ok Rafael got sent off, but is that result good still acceptable?... should a so-so Bayern team be knocking Man U out of the Champ.'s League?... did Fergie get it wrong a little over the 2 legs?... and what about the no. of goals conceded?

It was a strange sort of game. Man Utd tore Bayern Munich apart for the first 40 minutes, then Robben started to come into it a bit more and that lifted Munich. Olic scored right at the end of the first half with Carrick letting him get past him, if Carrick had of dealt with it and Man Utd would of gone in at 3-0 then I have no doubt Man Utd would of gone on to win comfortably.

People are saying that the Rafael sending off was the turning point but it was Carrick's failure to deal with Olic just before half time that turned it around imo.

The sending off was crucial after that United eased off attacking Bayern and let them go for the 2nd goal.

It was a mistake and it certainly bought Bayerns spirit up but i don't think Man u wouldn't of scored again if it'd of been 11 v 11, Rooney going off was also a factor, they had nobody up front that Bayern would of worried about that much (in relative terms anyway) so were able to push on.

United were much too good for 40 minutes and could have had 6 as easily as they had 3. But they had already started to take their foot off the pedal before Olic scored. United last night were an inexperienced 11/unit and didn't quite know what to do once they were in the clear. Bayern on the other hand, who could easily have lost by 10 goals or so over the two legs if Rooney had been fit, have real experience in their attacking players and did very well to galvanize themselves at 3 - 0 down. So well done to them, they have a real chance of making the final and then its all about what happens on the night. They have already beaten two better sides.

United killed Bayern with pace on the flanks. But Valencia, for all that he can be very good when he has the ball, doesn't quite get involved enough. Rafael, who was a little unlucky to be censured by he referee for an early bit of retaliation when he had fooled one of Bayern's monolithic defenders, had to do too much of the work on the right flank. Nani got more involved. In midfield, United lack pace. Carrick does too little and tends to replicate Fletcher, while the excellent Park seems always to be trying to fnd a role.

It's a shame that the injury to Rooney has come at such a bad time. It reminds me slightly of 2000 when United played, in the latter stages of the Champions League and the domestic season, the best football I have ever seen by an English club only to lose Beckham and Keane to injury against Deportivo. They ended up losing the league to a comparatively pedestrian Arsenal side. The race not always to the swift. The rest, for England and the Republic in the Word Cup, is history. I very much hope that Rooney is properly fit to play in the World Cup.

You mean 2002? Arsenal won it in '97-'98, '01-'02 and '03-'04, if I'm not mistaken. United won it in 2000.
