Just wondering how Federer fans, not unreasonable ones, but balanced ones feel about today's Rafa. He plays a much smarter, more offensive game. He celebrates waaaaaaay less, like hardly ever at all. He doesn't talk about his knees anymore or take MTO's. Have you noticed these things? Has he grown on you over time at all? This guy has literally grown up before our very eyes, it's insane.

I started out as a Fed fan but Nadal started growing on me after 2008.I hope he plays more like he did in the fifth set against Novak at the RG.

I try to be objective, I like Nadal in interviews, but as soon as he steps on a tennis court I can't stand him. It's something about his demeanour. There are others like Murray and Berdych where the same thing applies.

I like him more than I used, to, though.

Great observations! I used to hate the guy, and now I can't root against him! all the points you made contribute to that, plus I think his injuries have done a good job humanizing him. And I realized how dumb it was to dislike him...sure he was kind of annoying and childish at times, but he's always been a pretty class act.

First off it's not "Rafa", it's Rafael or you could also refer to him as Nadal. He's not your friend/relative. Why not just call him Ralph then?
Second, he still takes unbearably long between points, still plays his ugly CC FH which is like the ugliest stroke of all time, ugly frown face throughout the match, one hell of an ugly BH and just plain overall ugly. Never seen him at the net, takes forever to serve. Probably not as ugly as he was in 06/07 sure but still boring and mundane to watch. I'd rather watch an episode of Under the dome than watching the nadal do his brainless routine.

Tennis is practically dead for me with the brainless grinding across all 4 majors, has been for a while now and the only point of interest when it comes to Ralph is to see if he equals/breaks Fed's slam count. And ofcourse as long as Fed's still playing, as a fan it's only natural to expect he can win one more. But gamewise, tennis is dead to me with pushers like Murray winning Wimbledon.

And what's with your nostalgic Ralph threads and posts of late? Looks like you haven't taken that WB RD 1 loss that well.
Also who are these unreasonable Fed fans, you're not referring to me are you?

He is a little annoying on court sometimes but on the whole I have no problem with him.

Sadly his fans can cause resentment towards him. When they make outlandish statments such as Nadal is GOAT or Rafa is better than Roger, it annoys people because it isn' t true. Are Nadal fans the Liverpool fans of tennis?

I did enjoy being on court 1 as Nadal fell to Darcis, although so did most of the crowd.

I like him and dislike him. I like him when he is down and fights back for his pain. Like when he comes back from injury....you miss him even though you hate him. Nadal not being in a draw is as weird as Federer not being there.

Don't like him when he plays Federer...the result is already not worth it since Federer gotten old and Nadal is not the same as before.

There are events I don't mind Nadal winning and there are events that **** me off when Nadal wins. One being FO .....if Nadal wins WTF, US Open....I am okay with that.

Saying Ralph grows on you is akin to saying drinking cough syrup grows on you.

The only thing I like about Ralph's game is his flat I/O FH esp some of them he's hit from the doubles alley. And I actually didn't mind his aggressive self at AO 05,that's the only time I've seen him play ALL OUT attacking tennis, not just spurts of it. But then afterwards he resorted to moonballing and OCDs and just made it impossible to root for him.

Yes. Of course I won't enjoy him beating Fed every time now, but I have to say the days I wanted everyone to take him out are pretty much over. The first time I truly wanted Nadal to win was when he played Djokovic at the AO2012 (not during their FO match that year though). After his amazing comeback season so far, I'd like him to add a few more HC titles as well. I have to say, aside from Federer, he's the only player of whom I look up the highlights of pretty much all his matches that I don't get to see live (which is most of them). I've started to enjoy seeing him ripping forehands or lasso-ing it to the ad-court. When he plays offensive with his forehand, it's one of my favourite shots to watch. I also think he is a much more charismatic and interesting champion than Djokovic and Murray and I've realised I will definitely miss him when he quits, because he adds buzz to the tour.

I was a much more ferocious fan in 2007/2008 than I am now, though. Oh how I raged during the Wimbledon 2008/Australian Open 2009 finals. :') But tennis results don't affect me nearly as much these days as they did back then (of course, age helps there). Maybe I was slightly annoyed during the AO2012 SF, seeing Rafa suddenly raise his game and defense yet again as if losing to Fed in a slam this one time just wasn't an option, but eh. Of the "Big 4", he's certainly my second favourite now. I do think his matches are too slow at times, I really prefer players to take less time because it becomes a much smoother match. But he does what he does. I sincerely hope he wins Montreal, btw.

I've always liked his personality though. Never had a reason to hate him outside of being a threat to Federer, which in itself is pretty short-sighted, but it makes being a fan much more interesting if you hate your favourite's main rival. :')

His fans are some of the most obnoxious bunch of any sporting figure I've seen,on par with ManUtd fans and they certainly don't make it any easier.

Nadal picks his butt every single return of serve and every single serve. That means he picks his butt more than there are points in the match and that's only one of his OCDs. How are we supposed to enjoy watching that?

Due to my suspicion he's used PEDs throughout his career I will never be to fond of him, same goes for post 2010 Djokovic and Ferrer. I'll like any player that doesn't display godlike stamina and recovery ability. Tsonga, Delpo, Gasquet, Nishikori and others are such players that come to mind.

To be fair, overly zealous fans of anyone or anything are annoying. Doesn't really matter who it is.

Nowadays, if I see someone uttering the same ultra-loving crap about Fed as if he's the only player they even know and they stopped watching after 2009, I get very annoyed as well. I'd much rather have a sensible fan than a complete worshipper, even if he or she worships my favourite player.

(and I'm just talking in general, that wasn't directed at you or anything)

he still does his fistpump with his leg in the air, he still grabs his butt and willy between points, he still takes ages between points, he still receives coaching and still has the nerve to complain when he receives warnigs for this.
You say he "matured" because he doesn't talk about his knees anymore or take MTO's, it takes a lot more than that to "mature"
Today I will enjoy his ***-kicking by djokovic just as much as a couple of years ago. BTW, I wouldn't call myself a Fed fan

The poll's a bit inflamatory isn't it, for someone who wants 'reasonable' people's thoughts. Why wouldn't Federer fans like Nadal? You are seeing tribalism that exists in other sports but I can't really attribute to tennis fans. I hope you realize the people commenting on the internet are a tiny minority of those who follow any given sport.

To answer the question, I think this Nadal is doing the best he can. I wish he had played more aggressively throughout his career. I think the sport will be immeasurably poorer without him.

Smart move MichaelNadal. You might as well name this thread:

"On which Federer fan did Nadal cause the most mental damage"?

The answer is on the replies :D

What more can I say.

I've always been a big Federer fan, and I've always liked Nadal as well. No option for this in this poll.

Literally my thoughts exactly, I've started to appreciate Nadal a lot over the past few years.

I agree with the second paragraph.

In fact, RNadal is my second favourite player, way above other players.

The thing I like most about Nadal is the way he just goes after what he wants and how target specific he is. I don't think he's more aggressive now. On the contrary, I think he's gotten more conservative. He had a crazy aggressive forehand back in 2005. Maybe the fact that his BH wing wasn't developed enough along with his movement forced him to add more oomph to his forehands but he used to really kill those FHs back then. He seemed more carefree then.
That said, I have mad respect for his effort and I think he's a very cool-headed guy. For all the emotion he shows, to me, he's much more cool-headed than Roger who's a bit like a simmering volcano of emotion at times (I love that too btw). I think his cool-headedness probably makes it slightly easier to watch him because he just does his thing. With Roger, the closer you've followed him the more you're aware of just how much emotion the guy can be holding in at times and it makes it difficult to watch him knowing and feeling how badly he wants something.

I'm more of a fan of him than I was, partly because I appreciate his style when he's aggressive and I prefer his matches with the other big 4 members to Djokorray. I still find his whole 2 year ranking system stupid though, reeks of selfishness IMO.

Amusing how much monfed apparently hates Nadal but can't seem to bring himself to stop posting his nonsense in a thread about Nadal long after he's given his opinion.

And incidentally, this:

His fans are some of the most obnoxious bunch of any sporting figure I've seen

...coming from monfed of all people, one of the most obnoxious "fans" there is on this forum, is truly laughable. Pot, kettle, black, etc etc. Up there with Chico on the "massively irritating cretin" scale.

Which is interesting that he does steam in everywhere slating Nadal, because if you say anything negative regarding Djokovic then Chico bursts in to tears.

The problem with Chico is that he thinks he's fair- when someone says something negative about Nadal, it's ok to him and all those negative posts about Djokovic is all bs.

Also, he can't distinguish between 'fact' and 'thought'. When 90% of voters thought Djokovic had the easiest draw in Cincinnati this year (which is obviously true), he thinks otherwise (voted for Nadal) and blame all voters who voted for Djokovic.

Lastly he can't accept the reality and keeps denying it. Djokovic is inferior to Nadal on clay, he's lucky in several occasions, etc. He just simply doesn't know how to accept it.

I wonder what Chico would answer to this question: who is #1 this season so far?

Let's just feel sorry for this guy who has an IQ of a 5 year old boy.

Just to clarify before I vote, does "Nuetral" mean Nadal's been 'nuetered' in which case wouldn't he then been the Mallorcan Bullock? In which case I guess that Federer and most of his fans would probably pity him - which hasn't been given as an option. I'm confused.

He's a troll that wanted to get on here, and much like other trolls, post about the same thing all the time to have a schtick and be known as the crazy Djokovic guy. Talking about him or feeding into it is just giving him what he wants. He's not serious.

Lol. The most pathetic poster whose sole purpose on this forum is to bash and spread lies about Djokovic is trying to lecture me. What a hypocrite.
I see that it is not enough anymore to bash Djokovic, but he has to resort to personal insults. Very nice.

TBH, I cannot stand the Murrovic matches. And Ferrer has no exciting weapons. Out of the current top 4, I'd pick Rafa as a favorite.

But of boy, the golden years of tennis, 2006-2008, when Fed could still run around the BH against Rafa. Huge FH to FH battles with both of them running around their BHs. I miss those times.
