Y'know who's really gone under the radar? Makarova.
Her win over Kerber today has meant she now has EIGHT wins over a top 10 player this year. Only other person to have more is Svitolina with #10 (4 of which came last week). Wozniacki also has eight top 10 wins.
All 8 of Makarova's top 10 wins have come at different events and unfortunately for her, 6 of the 7 times she's knocked out the top 10 player, she went on to lose in the very next round. So Sloane's chances are looking good.
Makarova's top 10 wins and then next round losses:
Aus Open. Beat #6 Cibulkova 3R, lost 4R to Konta
Dubai. Beat #5 Cibulkova 2R, lost 3R to Davis
Stuttgart. Beat #8 Radwanska 1R, lost 2R to Sharapova
Rome. Beat #5 Cibulkova 2R, lost 3R to Bertens
French Open. Beat #1 Kerber 1R, lost 2R to Tsurenko
Toronto. Beat #7 Konta 2R, lost 3R to Safarova
Cincinnati Beat #3 Kerber 2R, ???????????
Only time she's beaten a top 10 player and won the next match:
Washington. Beat #2 Halep in the QF, won the title!
Impressive though that of the 8 top 10 wins, 7 have been either at a Premier, Premier 5 or Slam.
