Halep with a 7th break point in this game, if she can't break in this game then that's got to be a gut punch.

Garcia saves it but Halep gets an 8th!

Saves it again but Halep hits a great shot to a 9th. Garcia with an ace. Wow, 9 break points saved!

WOW, stunning resilience.

Garcia saves 9 break points and on her first game point, she gets a massive hold for 4-3.

That was about a 15 minute game. Huge blow for Halep, will be interesting to see if she can hold serve now.

Halep holds for 5-5. She is keep strong mentally, great to see. Thought she would've faded after blowing 9 break points in the one game.

I'm in awe of how well Garcia is playing. She's played 10 matches in 14 days. Played a 3 hour 26 minute thriller against Svitolina in the QF and she's still going strong

Playing so well here.

Garcia holds for 6-5. This is fantastic quality.

Tiebreak time!

Very juicy.

Garcia with a hold. 1-0.
Huge serve by Halep. 1-1. Oh challenge! And it's in.
Garcia with the minibreak, just stepped it up. 2-1.
JUST TOO GOOD AT THE NET. 3-1 Garcia.
Big 2nd serve from Garcia. 4-1. Halep not returning well enough on the 2nd serve.
Garcia blows an easy 2nd serve. Garcia 4-2.
OH NO. Garcia leaves the ball thinking it'll go out but it lands in. 4-3.
Garcia up 5-3 now with a Halep error.
WHAT A RALLY! And then Halep clips the net and it makes it go out, unlucky. Triple match points for Garcia! 6-3.

Caroline Garcia wins the China Open!
Wins the Premier 5 Wuhan Open and Premier Mandatory China Open in back to back weeks! 11 consecutive wins! Three top 10 wins. Insane run! Stunning play.
Knocks out the world number #2 Simona Halep who will be the new world number 1 tomorrow!

Lovely embrace at the net, hugs and kisses from both players. Great to see.

Her 11 straight wins:
Wuhan: Kerber, McHale, Cibulkova, Makarova, Sakkari and Barty.
Beijing: Mertens, Cornet, Svitolina, Kvitova and Halep .

Some awesome wins there.

Garcia is the top seed at the Tianjin Open this week and has drawn ... WC Maria Sharapova in the 1R! Wonder if she'll play, she's now played 11 matches in 14 days but she could qualify for Singapore. Konta not playing this week..

Tough loss for Halep but she played really well, and will leave the tournament as the new #1 which is an accomplishment.

Garcia was just too good.

Sweet gift from Garcia to Halep for arriving at No.1 yesterday - a proper public thrashing today :D
What has gotten into Garcia ?? she is finally fulfilling her potential. Garcia is poor woman's Federer. she is that talented but really hasn't put it together in WTA yet. when she was coming up in the Juniors, many people said she is next #1 in WTA

she will probably get pounded. Garcia probably is in party mood after this big victory.

Right now, somewhere in Great Britain, Andy Murray is petting his dogs, feeling vindicated.

Congratulations to Hingis, consolidates her no.1 ranking.
I still can't believe she managed to split up a rather successful pairing of siblings for her own game. I mean it's worked but seems odd.

I noticed that Anastasia Rodionova has done something similar to the Kichenok twins! They were a pairing and now Nadiia plays with Rodionova whilst the other seems to jump partners, much like the other Chan sibling.

Pretty sure Garcia will withdraw and take WC in Moskow maybe. 2 Weeks back to back title is a well done accomplishment already.

Definitely. Biggest career win, nearing the end, on the cusp of qualifying for Singapore Finals and would have to face Sharapova in the first round so would risk a loss too soon after her career-high win!

She's been strapped up since taking the title in Wuhan, too o_O

Quite concerning that even as number 1, Halep somehow can't summon her highest level in these big finals. The 2013 version of Halep, that I keep going back to, was much better at raising her last gear.

If Martina Hingis asked you to play doubles wouldn't you jump at the chance?
I've always thought Venus and Hingis would have made an incredible doubles team.

Garcia is pretty much safe for Singapore anyway. Konta must reach 185 points which means SF in Moskow. But I think she has to drop one of her tournaments (Selected only best 16 and GS and Premier Mandatory must be included) so drop another 10 point which means 195 points to catch Garcia. So she must reach final in Moskow.

Gracia finally won a 500 WTA tournament! LOL!
LOL no. It's a 500 for ATP, but for WTA it's 1000! And the one she won the week before was 900!

I really dislike the WTA calendar and the point value of so many of the tournaments. I feel it plays a big part in the topsy turvy rankings, but it probably all boils down to sponsorship money and which cities are willing to pay the most. It's a business so whatcha gonna do?:(

Simona Halep lost the first match in the unofficial status of the first racket of the world.
My most complete review of the match. What Others Did not See)

She was probably too excited about becoming #1. Let's wait and see how she performs after it becomes official on Monday. ;)

I only found this in spanish, but basically Medina Garrigues was appointed as the new Fed Cup captain and, as such, she'll end her partnership with Ostapenko at the end of this season. Eh, not particularly excited about this... Garrigues' calmness and pragmatism seemed like the ideal foil to Ostapenko's impulsiveness.

Noooooooo.
Every time I have hope in a young player, something happens to halt their progress.
It was going so well.

Ah ah ah! Let's wait and see. It does look like a bump in the road, but who knows. Maybe her next coach can take her even further than Garrigues already has...
But I do wonder if Ostapenko's brashness had anything to do with it. Ferrero did reject the position to stay with Zverev. Of course Garrigues may hold Fed Cup to a higher regard, but after seeing those last on-court interactions between them, one has to think if Penko's demeanour finally took a toll on Garrigues (I know she's young, but there's a limit to what a person can endure without breaking).

Yeah, but what a complete embarrassment for tennis in China, even by their poor standards. There were like 100 people in the whole stadium.
