2019 Wilson Blade

Just got 2 blades 18x20 V7 in. Low and behold, the unstrung specs with plastic on the grip:

First Blade:
31.8 balance 8 points HL
296,5 SW
306.1 static

Second Blade:
32.8 balance 5 points HL
301 SW
305,7 static

Opinions?
Decided to keep the stick that was on spec and send the other one back.

Specs after stringing with 1.20 Head lynx and Tournagrip, no dampener.

32,7 Balance
330SW
323.8 static

Will briefly hit wirh it today.

Wow, the Clash to me had zero connection to the ball. I tried a demo of the 100 at the tennis club here and hated it because it felt like I had no idea what the ball was going to do. I liked it only because it was good on the arm but it had a good amount of power to it that I didn’t really feel full control over.

I feel very connected to the ball with the 18x20 v7, but I also would not suggest those 2 strings. This frame really sings with a crisper poly which is why I think most people are loving it with ALU style polys. RS Lyon..etc. Typhoon is a winner in it, and I just put Max Power Rough in it and that works great as well.

For me, as soon as I hit the ball with the 18x20, I know what’s going to happen. It’s great. Everyone who has tried my racquet has been highly impressed. Even my coach who has been using the same Prestige Mid for 15 years. He wants the Blade now.
In What tension you strung the Blade with the Typhoon? I'm using Prestige Mid for years and looking to switch due to some arm problems

Just came back from my first hit with this frame. I now understand the hype. Very very nice frame. It can do so much at such a low static weight. I can really hit some winners with this thing. What drew me away from the clash 100 was that I could never make a winner with it. Could grind all day, but couldnt make a winner. For me tennis is about being able to be agressive, being able to make those winners, being able to dictate a game.
Return of serve was crazy good, hit quite a few direct winner from it. Was able to use and redirect the pace from the server very well. Serves felt pretty good, but will need the most tweaking, as always for me with a new frame.
Felt like I could get pretty good spin on both wings, but especially on my ohbh, making for some nice net clearance.

Did you also experience more pocketing and more flex on really heavy hitting?

So far I am very very impressed, but time will tell. Need match play also. But I have the gravity pro coming this week, curious to see how I like that.

Ow almost forgot: it is crazy but this frame can be played without a dampener.

Good to know that 8g Head Lynx adds about 33.5 SW. Head Touch 17g adds about 37 SW to the racquet.

Just played this frame with no dampener. Yes it absolutely can be done if you want a little more crispness. Pretty awesome. I still prefer my sampras dampener but ive been using a dampener my whole life.

Half of this board is complaining the price of $230 is too much, now you want them to move the production to the US and charge $320 per racket?
One solution is to get off our butts and buy the racket in a store (like PGA superstore for example) where we can measure the spec.
Of course, not everyone has the access to a local tennis shop, however, I’d expect the majority on this board should.
I purchased three matched frames in a store. BTW: It would be great not to rely on China for manufacturing. And why are they so overpriced if they are made in China? It seem prices have gone up a lot in recent years.

It's like wearing pajamas to Walmart. Once someone does it and people shrug it off, it becomes the new norm. The RF97A was very expensive and people still bought it. Wilson can now offer the Blade at what we think is a bargain at this stage of the game.

Exactly, they tested pricing and they are selling so apparently we complain but we’re not price sensitive enough to not buy

Out of curiosity, is the 2015 18x20 Blade a good proxy for the V7 18x20 Blade, or do they play substantially different? I saw local ad for some 2015 18x20 going for cheap and wondering if they play very similarly. The only Blade experience I have is my wife's stock 98S CV, which, I feel is too light.

Apparently this comparison has been made numerous times by numerous people throughout the thread. If you’ve got time to look back over hundreds of posts

I played the 2013 98S next to the V7 98S yesterday. My friend brought his onto court. I normally play 18x20 patterns only.

The problem is that the 2013 98s racket has a swingweight of 333 whereas the V7 had a strung Swingweight of 321. That makes a huge difference. With Wilson you basically always get different rackets.

The 18x16 pattern also just isnt really mine I guess. The string movement is just driving me crazy. I would need to restring every hour on the 98s I guess. But you do get a nice launch angle, quite some spin and quite a bit of action on the ball. Found the control to be alright as well, especially considering the strings were everywhere. I guess I understand Dimitrov in wanting 18x17 :).

I haven't provided any updates as I wanted for the racket feedback to sink in a bit before I post more. By now, I've put about 15 hours on the 18x20 and maybe 8-10 on the 16x19. Random thoughts below:

  1. Even though I typically play with the 2015 18x20, I find the V7 16x19 to work better for my strokes than the V7 18x20 when they are both at 322 gr static weight. The 18x20 is a bit more head heavy. I feel the 16x19 is tight enough that gives you all the advantages of the 16x19 with 18x20 consistency and predictability. The 16x19 gives you an "easier and safer" launch angle to clear the net and easy depth on the ball. The 18x20 might work better for someone with a more traditional flatter swing style.
  2. It's not a racket for everybody. Never was, never will be. It's not easy and won't give you tons of extra power. It will give you some but it will mostly reward good fundamentals, positioning and solid swings. Half swings and ping pong shots won't work with this one.
  3. The 16x19 plays phenomenally well with Yonex PTP yellow.
  4. Racket is soooooo comfy. I've played 20+ hours with it with poly and 0 pain. And I recently did have issues with early signs of TE. And no dampener, it doesn't need it.
  5. I love the feedback from the racket. You really know how much power and spin you put to every ball. Really gives you confidence to "shape" balls and be creative in the court.
  6. Serves with the 16x19 are bombs. Both 1st and 2nd are great. Nice precision and spin. I always felt that with the Blade you need to work hard for the 2nd serve to have pace but I don't feel the same way with the 16x19. Very happy on that front.
I've said it before and I will say it again, is it better than the 2015? Not sure but just the fact that we are wondering about it says a lot.

Nice review! I experienced the same thing with the new Blade 98 16 x 19 v7. I totally agree that you have to have sound fundamentals to get the most of the Blade. I really was able to dial my serve with the Blade and the serve is generally my weakest stroke! It’s all court racquet and also shines for the volley. I was able to get some easy points serving and volleying! You have to work harder from the baseline but can be rewarded with got shot making! Definitely an upgrade from the Countervail!!

Just picked up a second Blade 98 16x19 v7 and can happily report that racket 1 was between 305-306g unstrung and racket 2 came in at the exact same weight! Although I've heard Wilson QC concern stories, I haven't experienced it here or with the 2 Clash Tours I bought 6 months ago (both from different sources...2-3g difference between rackets).

Nice, only thing I disagree with is the 18x20 and a traditional swing style. I have a strong SW grip and modern swing the 18x20 is perfect for me. It has really nice power so I can brush the ball a little and still get lots of easy depth.

I think 18x20 and 16x19 have the same balance but 18x20 feels head heavier due to higher swingweight. also agree with Power player in the sense that not sure if 18x20 is more suitable for flat hitter.. i have eastern grip and probably more flat hitter than topspin... i do get good arc to the ball on my groundstrokes.. i love that i can swing away with 18x20 and control is there but the only thing i noticed on OHBH and on serve returns is the low launch angle. It does gives me a bit of trouble.. working on it.. similar to you will post more feedback as i put significant amount of time into 18x20 and then 16x19 to compare. So far been hitting with 18x20 only.. love the racquet.. SW is a pleasure.. my only pick is on launch angle tbh..

Agreed, I think the whole notion that 18x20 is for flat hitters is harmful. I’ve historically avoided 18x20 because of the “lack of spin”, but since switching to the Ultra Tour I would probably say that I’m hitting with more spin than I have ever done before.

Keep in mind that I said "The 18x20 might work better for someone with a more traditional flatter swing style" with might being the keyword here. Everybody's strokes are different and it's impossible for me to tell what will or won't for somebody else. Mine are a bit on the whippier side I guess. Below is a vid of me hitting to get an idea of swingstyle (it gets better after the 40 sec mark).

Also, it's not that I didn't like the 18x20 or I couldn't hit with it at all. But maybe the 16x19 is a bit more dialed in at the moment. My 1st comments on the 18x20 were extremely positive and I stand behind them.

Imagine my surprise with the 16x19 working better on the V7 when I have logged in hundreds of hours with the 2015 18x20 and 0 with the 2015 16x19!! :-D :-D

I actually very much prefer my OHBH with the v7 18x20. It's probably the most solid BH I have ever hit with this racket as I am able to hit flat and very accurately. Maybe I just need a different string setup, omg so many rackets to test, not enough time!

Guys,

Need your help. Just ordered a second 16x19 version because it is now my main stick. I paid the extra eur 20 for the quality control and I need to choose among the following 6 rackets. Which one would you choose considering the fact that I also tested the 18x20 version but I found the SW a little bit too high for me.

I am thinking about choosing the racket no. 6 because it seems to be a good balance. But swingweight isn't supposed to be near 328 according to official specs ?? It seems so much lower...

I believe the general rule is that strings add roughly 30 to the swing weight. So add 30 to any of those sw you should get somwehere near 328.

The main issue should be which one comes closest to the one you currently have.

The specs you listed are unstrung. When you add strings, it will definitely be SW of 330 plus and higher depending on your string setup. If you looking for an easier to swing racquet, I would go with the lowest SW since you can always add lead tape to it to make it at a certain SW you prefer. You can subtract SW from the hoop well you could but you would have to remove the bumper guard or strip the paint to drop the SW.

Depends on the string, the heavier thicker gauge will definitely add more than 30 SW.

2015 Blade is more crisp and 2019 Blade v7 is softer but these are subtle differences. I ended up upgrading to the Blade v7 mainly because it felt more comfortable while retaining most of the 2015 Blade qualities with the except of volleys where the 2015 feels better but that is expected due to a stiffer hoop.

I used to use a 16x19 racquets but as my technique improve, 18x20 racquets became the better frames for me. Spin is all about your technique. The reason why people think 18x20 are for flat hitters is because you have more control so it allows you to just crush balls and that sometime is just plain fun.

I couldn't crush flat shots as well with 16x19 probably more open pattern and not as many strings contacting the ball.

Buy #1 and #2 since they are almost identical. You can match your current racquet to them or sell it. Enjoy!

Thank you ! However 294 is too low swingweight so I choose number 6 to have 328 swingweight strung which is closer to my favorites specs :)

my goal was to make the racquet more HL and whippier by adding about 7-8gr to handle of the 18x20... last night i took the weight off and played stock this morning (just an over grip which is 5gr weight). balance is about 4pts... total static weight 330gr. SW is about 335ish.. i like this better.. with such high SW (at least for me high) it seems the point is that keep the overall racquet weight light. I don't think weight in the handle achieved what I initially thought it would achieve. I actually feel like it made the racquet heavier overall and less maneuverable.. this is all IMO. i actually feel like I am managing the racquet better now stock. I will keep it stock. With small adjustments and getting used to launch angle as well. I really do think this blade may put an end to my racquet search. Such a good balanced racquet. I don't think I would be able to use it a year ago but I play a lot of tennis and getting better at it and can appreciate this frame more than I would have back then. My coach thinks it is really a good fit for me as well. Next week I will try HD (since i ordered it), but it has a high bar to compare to. Let's see how it goes.

Are Wilson grips bigger or smaller than Yonex? I use 4 3/8 in yonex and wanted to confirm.

Also, are bigger grips heavier (e.g., 4 1/4 will be lighter than 4 3/8)?

Your post reflects everything I have been thinking about this frame lately. I am playing it stock plus overgrip with the following unstrung specs (with plastic on handle): 308 g, 6 HL, 304 sw. Strung with 1.20 max power the sw jumps to 335. I don’t even want to touch another racquet!

FWIW the pallets are probably close but the v7 has a thick stock replacement grip (compared to cv) so it feels a little bigger than 4 3/8 to me. I am also wrapping my overgrip with a lot of overlap since the handle is short so that could be a factor though.

Are any of you going with full poly in the 16x19 at lower 40's (lbs) for tension? If so, how does it feel and what string are you using? I am experimenting.

I will but I haven't picked one up yet. I'll do ALU 16L probably 44 ish and another in 4G. In reality because my machine is kinda old actual tension could be lower. I'll report back.

Can anyone here comment a bit on the power of this frame compared to Gravity Pro? I have a Gravity Pro, and really just put a leather grip on and an overgrip and at times if not making good topspin form, found the racquet to have too much power at times, and it was difficult to maneuver at times, especially on serve.

I played with the BLX blade and the Black blade from 2013 (18x20) for over 3 years. Loved those frames, but went away from them after having shoulder injury that prevented me from playing for 6 months. I hit with the 2015 Blade for a while (demoed) and really enjoyed it.

I am just starting to fear is my form crap or is the Gravity pro with its static weight being higher and higher swingweight the issue? I value good control and don't struggle with swinging big on groundstrokes. Looking for opinions from those here that have really been using this for few weeks now.

For past 4 years I've used weighted up Prince Classic Graphite 100s to about 12.0oz and SW around 326-328.

Thanks!

I tried with Alu Power Rough 16L @ 45lbs. The first time I hit with the freshly strung racket, it was a hot Saturday in the upper 90's. String/racket felt really soft and the ball was launching. Subsequent hitting sessions were in cooler evenings and the strings felt stiffer and had more control/less power. Will need to try my regular setup of VS 16 gut@48lbs/Yonex 17 PTP@45lbs.

Gravity Pro is well Pro stick it takes more out of you to get best results imho.

Which is why I am hopeful perhaps that Blade could work better. The Gravity for every 2 great shots would lead to 1-2 shots almost hitting fence. I could also have been overhitting alot and not trusting its weight to do all the work, but to me that doesn't feel as natural.

I had the same issue I was going to string it up at 60lb next but then I realized why am I doing this there are better players on this forum that can use this stick so I listed it instead lol

I feel better I'm not alone lol. But you're not having that problem with the Blade?

Both sticks have almost identical power zones using the TWU comparison tool. It’s almost as if you take some handle weight out of the Gravity and voila you have the Blade v7. I never hit the Gravity, but I’ve played similar setups and the added mass is great but it takes a takes a toll too.

Exactly, so not sure if I should be worried about the Blade not working then. Again, its 99% most likely me sucking, but never know.

Anyone else feel like the V7 16x19 is more powerful and poppy than the Countervail version? I remember reading somewhere that the V7’s weight is more polarized. Maybe it’s just because the V7 is more HL.

Thank you ! However 294 is too low swingweight so I choose number 6 to have 328 swingweight strung which is closer to my favorites specs :)

You should have read my post (just little bit above yours) and that of Parasailing before choosing racket 6 imho.

As you can see from our posts:
18g Head Lynx 1.20mm adds about 33.5 SW points to the 18x20 frame. Head Touch 17g 1.25 adds about 37 SW to the racquet.

So if you normally play 1.25 strings in your 16x19 you would peobably be around 34/35 swingweight points increase. That would put you on 333 swingweight with racket nr 6. Which would be too high. All you can do then is play a thinner gauge string to get the swingweight down...

I would have gone for 1 or 2. Its no problem to add weight to the hoop. It sucks having a too high swingweight.
