2020 US Open General Discussion (ATP)

He didn't smack the ball at all. He simply emptied his pocket after the game was over, and sent the ball back without looking. OK, it was careless, but this was clearly not intentional, and the ball was not hit even too hard.

OK, I guess rules apply to everyone but this is simply a ridiculous way to end his US Open.

Djokovic has been playing pro/high level junior tennis for 20 years. He knows the rules.

I was wrong Djokovic just thrown out of his match!:giggle: for hitting a lines person with a ball! Pablo Carreño Busta moves on to the 4th round. Easy win too forPablo Carreño Busta.

Fair point. Dude is 33. How many more chances is he going to get. Theoretically 20 more slams, but nothing is guaranteed.

It wasn't intentional. How the **** can you lose the match over that? The people who run this event are complete morons. No doubt if Federer had done it, he'd still be in the tournament.

This could change tennis history. This is the BIGGEST DECISION ever.

GOAT race could be altered by this one stupidity by Novak.

Why Novak why? Please God why? Why did you hit the ball person? I mean WTF were you thinking? You could have been GOAT this year.

JUST TERRIBLE. Novak gets out of a tournament which he almost certainly would have won.
GOAT race was already irrevocably changed this year by canceling Wimbledon and having Nadal withdraw from the USO.

Grandpa could've cemented his position as GOAT already had he converted one of his MP's at Wimby last year

To be honest he deserves it. He is always doing stuff like this where cant control his temperament and now he got punished. Sorry Nole but you have yourself to blame for this.

Remember RG 16 QF vs Berdych, he threw his racquet and by 1/2 inches it didn't hit one of the line judges lol, before that in the rome 2016 final he threw his racquet to the ground and it bounced so high that it landed on the stands behind him, again by 1/2 inches he didn't hit a person.

Shocking scenes, I hate to say it, but it was the right choice. Djokovic and his stupid dropshots to be blamed fir it.

Are you serious @Hitman ? Clearly NOVAK did not hit this intentionally. He was just emptying his pockets and sending the ball away.

I can't believe that this happened. I'm in shock. It was almost certainly 18th slam title for Novak.

Isn't it amazing the difference a couple of millimetres can make? If PCB's forehand at 0-40 had just gone out the whole complexion of the match(and probably tournament) would've likely been so different. Just goes to show once again how slim the margins in sport can be.

I'm shocked. Maybe they should consider the victim's wish in cases like these. I mean, ball flies all the time and it is possible to be hit with a ball while the match is on as well. The Nalbandian case is different because he kicked an object that hit the judge and made him bleed.

Tim Henman: “It happened to me in 1995. We were up 2 sets in the doubles. I hit a ball girl in the ear. Djokovic was not aiming for the line judge, but you have to be responsible for your actions. There is no other results but to be defaulted.”

Strong words - given the significance of this event, the player and the situation Im sure this will be a very controversial and talked about event for a while.

No one does it intentionally, but you need to act like a professional out there, he kept making stupid dropshots instead of just doing what he should, then when PCB made him pay for it, he got frustrated and smacked the ball. Yes, of course he didn't want to smash that lady's face in with the ball, but he still did something which no one is above.

I am annoyed at him for not only messing up this chance to win this title, but his professional conduct, he didn't just empty his pockets, he smacked that ball with frustration, knowing there were people standing there.

This is sad. This should NOT be how things end. Leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Would rather have somebody beat Novak for the title. Having said that, rules are rules. He deserved the unfortunate DQ

It was the second time he launched a ball and he did it in anger. Sorry, but no matter who did it, there’s only one outcome.

Update:

“The Serb, who had previously been suffering with a collarbone injury, was visibly frustrated after being broken in the first set as the Spaniard took a 6-5 lead.

He struck a ball away in frustration - and although he was not facing the assailed lineswoman, the ball hit her and she was bent double, coughing and needed medical attention.
There then followed a lengthy consultation with the tournament referee, with Djokovic seemingly attempting to convince the referee and chair umpire to let him continue in his campaign but to no avail.”

Intent is irrelevant. If you hit a ball outside of match play and it strikes somebody your default chances are high.

Onto the QF for PCB where he gets Goffin or Shapo for a SF berth - who would have thought?!
SF will be v Zverev, Coric or Thompson. Wow. Just wow!
