Any other Fed fan now EXTREMELY nervous for every match he plays?

Federer still has a long way to go, and he's been out of things for a while. It's not a given, I am taking one match at a time. He isn't in 2014/5 shape. I've been chilling until now expecting him to go out in the first week. I guess I'll start getting nervous if he has to face Cilic.

Was the last time he suddenly became favourite to do something historic when he played Haas at the French (minus Nadal) and was down two sets? Maybe Tommy was playing well but on paper it seemed like Roger got nervous.

Once it got past 2010 and the Grand slam wins dried up and losses to Djokovic mounted, I just got pragmatic about the whole thing. What will hapen, will happen - he will win or he won't, and in the big picture it doesn't change anything. There's nothing more liberating than accepting reality. I will still hope he wins and it would be nice, but if doesn't, oh well...

I can understand the concerns of some, but I think he will be very motivated now. This is his imo last great chance to get 18. I feel he will do it, only thing truly that can stop him is Zen Mode Murray, meaning Murray will need to play out of his skin to stop him.

I was nervous maybe in 2010-11 when he began to have these weird losses. Now I take anything he wins as a bonus so no, not worried because I am interested in just watching the maestro essay that style of play one more time (which sadly may die out with him and finally bring the curtains down on the classic era).

I heard an interview of Fed today. He said clearly that he didn't know what his body and game could or could not do during his matches before Wimbledon but feels a lot better about everything right now. So I would not count him out this year.

No. It's not like Djokovic is the only player being capable of beating Fed nowadays.

One match at the time, and come what may.
Can't bear to see your favourite player lose? well, you're going to be in for a nasty time when Father Time strikes... as he does to every player eventually.

Starting to look like it.
Anyone seen Cilic play? In what form is he?

I'm not nervous, cause I don't expect Federer to win. I think he will falter before the final, probably against Cilic or Raonic. He can't be at the level required to win a slam, not after being out for nearly 6 months. He might have looked decently in Wimby's first week, but those lower ranked players made him look better than he is. Except for Pella, who clearly showed that Fed's backhand and return are seriously below par. Serve and forehand are clicking, that's why he looks good. But in the next rounds he will face players with better grass ground games, and eventually will be exposed.
His serve and forehand will be sufficient against anyone not named Djokovic though, so long as everything else isn't totally dismal.
His level is still so far above most of the tour regulars it's not funny.

Still, I'm very much in "wait and see" mode for now. Cilic, Raonic, and Murray are all good on grass.

I always expect Federer to lose every match he plays against most top 10 players and some top 20.
But eah, i'm still nervous, because despite it all, i'm still hoping.

Cilic beated Fed in straight in 2014 US Close, so it is not surprised to see cilic to do it again. I believe Cilic is a dangerous top 5 player, if he can improve his strength/stamina and mental, he is too skinny. He and other up and coming young guns can give Djoker a lot of troubles if they can play fearless tennis.

Nervous, but don't have any expectations. He doesn't need to win 18. I think he has long cemented his legacy as GOAT and that's comforting.

Djoker has a slim chance of catching 17 IMO, but I agree with this overall. Right now I'm just happy we'll see someone else lift a major trophy. I don't care if it's not Federer (unless he comes really close to winning and blows it maybe). Content with 17 slams. Content in my belief that Federer is the best player I've ever seen regardless of what Djokovic's numbers are at the end of his career. Other people should try it. It's not as hard as they think and it makes viewing much more enjoyable.

Oh and that last part made me chuckle. :)

Whatever you say baby.:p That is how I remember when I was rearing my ex-g, she exhaled:"aha......fantastical." in her Spanish accent. Guess what my reply was.:D

not nervous but he hasn't really been tested too much. Playing Willis didn't really let him grove his shots but we'll see, easy matches are needed but...

So far Nole is aging much better than Federer, playing much better than Federer was playing at the same age. So we will see.

I know Djokovic is currently a fitness freak of nature, but his style of play is much more taxing on the body than Federer's so that's why i said that.
If he proves me wrong then so be it though.

Djokovic is right now much better than Fed was at the same age, true. But that's not because he's aging better, but rather because he just had such a superior level to begin with. You have to remember that Feder was always a pretty scrappy Santoroesque player back in the day who by the power of his will and grit has managed to improve into his thirties and is finally just about to hit his peak. You won't see Djokovic do that. In five years, Djokovic will be outside the top 5, while Feder will be #1.

Fed will be #1 in 5 years? Am I missing something? ;)
Novak has been better because he made basic improvements in his game since 2011, while Fed did much the same, finally, under Edberg, but at an older age.

If he keeps on playing — which I think he will: a life-long subscription to Lindor truffles and Rolexes won't pay for itself — and stays injury free with that scrappy, physically demanding defensive junkball game of his, then I think there's a fair chance of that happening. His idol, Santoro, kept it going till 38 I think, and Feder with his bigger serve should be able to outdo that.

You do bring up some valid points though.

He'd have to do something even Rosewall and Pancho Gonzales could not do. ;)

I'd settle for a slam in two years. That's would just about equal what Rosewall did at the AO so many years go...

I just hope #BabySantoro is able to beat Cilic next. It's a miracle that this junkballer has won any slams at all. So any future victories are nothing but gravy.

I agree.

But we have to remember that Feder has an enormous amount of grit and will to improve, and his scrappy junkballing is just what is needed to bother Cilic and Raonic and make shotmaker Murray beat himself like he has done so many times before. I think we might be in for a Triumph of the Will from the master tactician!

Sysy droping a truth bomb on y'all. I know it's hard to accept the truth if you're a Djokovic fan, but this is absolutely spot on. Well done.

Cilic's results haven't been great this year and he missed most of the clay season due to a knee injury. He completely bent over to Novak while trying to defend his USO title, who Federer gave a tough fight in the final. If Fed can't win a single semi-challenging match, he doesn't deserve to win Wimbledon.
Agree. A real 'murderer's row' Cilic has defeated at Wimbledon so far: Baker, Stakhovsky, Lacko - and a freebie from Nishikori. LOL! They should just hand him the trophy now. H2H is still 5-1 for Fed.

PS - Stakhovsky is 21-23 career on grass.

That's a healthy way of looking at it. Still, sometimes I feel a bit insecure about Fed's abilities today and I feel like he doesn't "deserve" to win a slam at all anymore. Since Murray and Djokovic both look better usually. That's why I wouldn't mind him sneaking a last slam in there. I would prefer it if he did it the hard way, by defeating Murray in the final. But I won't complain either if all of Fed's opposition goes away and he gets an easy slam win. I feel like he deserves one after facing a tough Djokovic in the last 3 slam finals.

I don't think Murray looked better than Federer at any of the slams over the past year. Wimbledon (straight setted Murray there), USO (Federer looked very good throughout except on break points in the final), and AO Federer looked better IMO. And Federer didn't even play RG. Moreover, Federer was better at the WTF, the 5th most important event. Murray isn't a big match or even big tournament player. He overachieved by winning 2 slams given his mental deficiencies tbh. I don't think he should be the favourite if he faces someone like Cilic or Raonic in the final.

"Extremely nervous" is a thing of the past for me. Last time I was on full fanboy mode and wanted him to win badly was when 2012 Wimbledon draw was announced - Djoko falling on his half meant a Fed win would also mean he would get No. 1 and that record of Pete's (he was 1 week short). He had so much to gain and he was playing awesome, so it looked possible. Fanboy mode has been effectively shut down since the end of that tournament - 2013 didn't help. I'm still very much interested in how he does but I don't get that excited anymore. I don't really care about a "one last hurrah" or anything.

I have no faith in Fed if he's isn't cruising to an easy win. Any kind of tough match he always seems to lose.

I'll see how he does tmr and if he passes the test, I'll start getting really nervous. For now, I'm still on the fence concerning his overall chances and I give Cilic a very good chance of knocking him out (wanna say 50-50, but hoping for Roger, I give Cilic 40-45 %).

Yes, I worry that every player he faces is going to go off against him. Federer is turning 35 in a month and I want to see him win an 18th.

Well , to his credit he never faced anyone other than the big four in finals.
Even in masters 1000 he's never lost a final to any other players. So i'm pretty sure i'd favour Murray over Raonic/Cilic , add to the fact he's among the best in returning super fast serves.

I will be nervous before final that's for sure. These early jokers don't scare at all these days. Compared to his 2010-11 self he is far more consistent. His level used to fluctuate a lot from tournament to tournament and also match to match in a tournament. He has successfully dealt with this problem switching to bigger frame and rebuilding efficient game. If Cilic/Raonic want to beat him, they will have to play simply out of mind Tennis, nothing less. Federer won't gift them match playing awful Tennis like he did to Berdych in 2010 or almost gifted to Falla in first round.

FRom QF on wards, all matches of Roger Federer will make me tensed and nervous.

Haha, trying to cheer myself by poasting gifs/memes.

Just imagine, one of Pouille and Berdy is going to be in the semifinal !
Whereas one of Tsonga and Murray will get knocked out. And Fed has to fight Cilic to make it.
