Big titles count

The Olympics is held once every four years. There are 9 masters every year. So no comparisons really, very different events.

but the Olympics only recently has become sought after by top players and is not part of the tour. So while players today want to win it because of the prestige of representing your country it’s not something that one can use in any GOAT type debate

It is part of the tour when it is held as time in the tour's schedule is allocated for it. Winning it will always add to a player's reputation.

Fair enough.

It's easy to imagine how many more Masters Federer could have won with a Master on grass. But there isn't one.
He has also choked away slams and masters in depressing manner.

It provides no points so can’t be part of the formal pro tour. Agree on reputation.

Can you please link the interviews where they (the Big three and others) clearly say:
They have made it a huge priority in their career and they have even commented on it being comparable to slams.

Big Titles count for the rest of the field:

Murray 18 (20 if Olympics included)
Wawrinka 4 (no WTF)
Zverev 4 (no Slams)
Del Potro 2 (no WTF)
Cilic 2 (no WTF)
Thiem 2 (no WTF)
Dimitrov 2 (no Slams)

WTF only:

Tsitsipas 1

Masters only:

Medvedev 2
Tsonga 2
Fognini 1
Isner 1
Khachanov 1
Robredo 1
Sock 1
The Big 3 and Murray have kept the lid tight, haven't they?

You don’t want to go down that rabbit hole considering Fed’s won many more Bo5 Masters than either Nadal or Djokovic.

Best to just stick with Slams.

Yeah, that's why I said "we are not talking about M1000's either" (or Atp Masters, for that matter). For most of Nadal's career the masters were BO3, not Nadal's fault.

The final is BO5.

I get it.

WTF the final used to be out of 5 sets. For obvious reasons they must not be taken into account (basically because Nadal can't win it) in the big titles account. On the other hand, Olympics are the biggest thing around. Even though most matches are being played out of 3 sets..... However Marc Rosset GOAT olympic champion 1992 agrees with your statement.

Sadly even the Olympics now have abolished Best of 5 for the next edition. So there is no Best of 5 tennis outside the Slams anymore. It's a shame and I fear the Slams will follow one day.

Depends of the match.

Rosset Arrese was painful to watch....and some say Olympics should count as the next big thing instead of the YEC.....OMG

do you remember the USO 2020 final?
do you remember how Ivanisevic forgot how to serve during match points in Wimbledon final?

let's not dismiss events based on cherry picking.

There's no cherry picking.

I can pick whatever YEC ....and there's no Nadal on the winner's cup.......and many RR..... FACT.

MP #1 = double fault. Second serve flies long approx 1 meter
MP #2 = double fault
MP #3 = Goran prays after getting to the 3rd match point

check it out.

how is Nadal performance at the tournament related to how big / important the event is?
you probably won't argue that RG or Wimbledon or USO are Chalenger or Futures type of tournaments, or will you?

One of the greatest final ever IMO. Loved every minute of it. We won't be able to understand each other.

Most Nadal fans argue that YEC shouldn't be counted as a big major title......And most tennis fans know that YEC is a massive event.

Even thought Nadal killed the FO, it is still a massive event.

depends.
those who worship Djokodal will tell you that it was boring af.

if you compare it to the above mentioned OG video, well, can't say that it is much better when Ivanisevic literally forgets how to serve on MP.

let's just agree that athletes are as well people, they have emotions, their demons, and for this reason the final isn't always the most beautiful match of the tournament.
so, let's not scrap the OG based on 1 match.

Ivanisevic was playing the match of his life in order to finally win a Slam...on the other side of the net, Rafter was trying to win his first slam. Not the greatest tennis match but emotionally so good and great atmosphere. Less depressing than many Djokodal...

Nadal is the guy who won his 2nd MS1000 by outlasting Coria in Rome 2005. He also outlasted Puerta to win his first Slam. Puerta had beaten Canas in the quarter final in 5 sets in that tournament.....No comment.

At Wimbledon, yes. He had already won back to back US Open titles (1997-8).

Even Steffi Graf’s grand slam in 1988 is known as the golden grand slam. It’s always been a huge deal.

Slams + YECs + Masters

Djokovic 57
Federer 54
Nadal 54
So Djokovic is 3rd then? Double amount of slams on his best surface. 6 out of 9 m1000s on his best surface and YEC always on his best surface.
I assume you are a Nadal or Federer fan posting that as it just proves why Nadal and Federer are so revered.

Yes it can. The players count it. They know more than we do.
