Delpo is not Lost Gen. He is part of Djokodal's generation.

C'mon, Djokovic was not peak in 2015! He only won 3 slams and reached only the final of the FO. He was sluggish and uninspired in that match. That's why he lost.

How come Federer had never used drop shots before this? I read he considered it girly to use it before.

It seems his dropshots are the only reason he didn't get straight setted
I think he started using the drop shot more in 2009, but it's not like he never used it before. It's like how every year commentators say Nadal's started adding more net play to his game, when he's been coming to net with great hands since 2004.

Nadal-Del Potro 2018 Wimbledon is the most entertaining Wimbledon match of the last 3 years.

OMFG Federer took a toilet break at 2 sets to 2

And his fans have the gall to call Djokodal a cheat? That is so unsportsmanlike , a 20-21 year old young guy is not supposed to keep his calm if you pull those tricks out of your sleeve.

At FO i think so. Not sure about USO.
Hmm. I think Delpo was more dominant in 2009 than Murray in 2012, and played better in the final against a better opponent. Outside those winning runs, they each have really just one great display – Murray beating Nadal in the 08 semis and Delpo beating Fed in the 17 quarters.

In a direct match-up Murray would probably win, but against the field I'd probably take Delpo.

Thank you for helping me derail this thread.

I was thinking of the 08 Rafa match more yes. I think you could be right about 09 and 12 events.

I think he decided to use them more regularly in 2009, but he executed dropshots before that too, just less often.

Then he should have **** on court. Why is it that in the most important matches this guy suddenly takes bathroom breaks? Did it in SF -F of 2017 AO too.
Are you really upset about Fed taking a toilet break between sets? Or are you upset that other people get upset when Rafa/Novak do it? I think it's silly to get upset about toilet breaks regardless. It's a similar dynamic with supposed strategic MTOs – could it be manipulated to give one an advantage over the opponent? Sure, but if it's wreaking such havoc on your opponent's game, they weren't a very worthy opponent in the first place.

Can we for a moment appreciate Federer BH? His defensive BH slice is an absolute sponge, and BH drive is actually able to go for nasty angles.

Wouldn't say its that bad as he just finished destroying Delpo in set 4. Federer has actually lost quite a few matches like this by breaking his own rhythm like IW in 2015. The only reason I don't like Nadal or Djokovic doing it is because it is a consistent pattern of behavior specifically after the opponent has built up momentum.

There have been a few instances of Fed doing it, like in AO 2017, but they are so few throughout his career, that I am willing to excuse that. And I don't use the excuse that "Oh Nadal broke him immediately so it makes everything okay." Sure, it definitely could have been taken to break Rafa's momentum. I can't make this judgement for sure because he very verrrrrrry rarely takes injury timeouts or bathroom breaks.

Edit: IW 2015 he just made a monster comeback in the 2nd before taking the break. Djokovic's hand was shaking when drinking his water in the break. And when Roger came back his entire momentum was snapped.

Del Potro indeed gave us lots of outstanding matches.
Unfortunately, after the first big one he won (his only GS), most of them he lost.

Shame about the injuries. Always leaves you wondering, what if? What if Ronaldo did not suffer any injuries and played the world cup final of 1998 at his normal amazing level? What if he didn't have his knee wrecked and wrecked once more 6 minutes into his return? etc etc etc Yeah, injuries suck. Some more than others, of course.

Between sets is the best time to take a break. Federer is human and needs a break as well sometimes. It's not like taking your time during the set or even in the middle of the game like ******.

Didn't Nadal also take a break before a freaking MP at 2012 IW against Fed? :-D

I know, it was a short rain delay and all, but still pretty funny.

well, probably if he took it in the middle of the game, then there was a clear need for that and it wasn't a small trick, but if fed took it, then the ill-wishers may have a slight odor that he cheats a bit, breaking down the opponent' tempo:cool:

Well no you don't take breaks mid-game unless you can't move, play the game to completion it's quick.

Fed was using drop shots as early as 1999-2000, especially on clay. He brought in Higueras to help him master the drop shot and he did help him. But it's a complete misnomer to suggest Fed wasn't using drop shots before 2009. He did perfect the fake drop shot after 2009 however.

Here are 2 ridiculous dropshots from fed vs Safin in AO 05 (and when I say ridiculous, I mean it)

17:33 and 18:05

there are other ones vs Agassi in USO 04&05 as well (1st set and 4th set respectively, IIRC)

He just didn't use them frequently.

Better quality match than their USO final later in the year. Not interested in wading into the "discussion" in the other thread about this Del Potro versus Wawrinka etc...

Suffice to say this Del Potro would be a handful but anyone in this era except peak Rafa on the dirt.
Wins under 40% vs top 10 on clay. Under 20% vs top 5.

Not even Zverev level.

Watched throughout the first set highlights. Sad about Fedr getting overpowered like a fluffball. BP rally exemplifies, kept hitting disgusting BHs until Delpo finally punished. (Slices on the other hand were good but they are the least effective on clay and Potro was prepared despite the height.)
