your.
I have played many different 4.0's whose serves are weaker than the typical 3.5's I play with.
I have noticed that 4.0 players don't even bother hitting their unreliable big serve.
(That is why they are 4.0, they are not Costner in Tin Cup)
Most rec adults don't play enough to use a big serve to any match advantage. They just fault.
And under 10% practice serves with a hopper.
At first, I was shocked, how can they have such weak serves, and have gotten past all the 3.5s?
Then I realized the serve doesn't matter, until it does.
Every single one of these 4.0's have a weak 1st and 2nd serve.
Yet, they are still 4.0.
You know why that is? Because no one has punished their serves.
If they did, they would lose all their service games.
By definition, if all these guys can sustain 4.0 level ratings, it means the serve does not matter at that level.
The serve is the most overrated stroke in tennis at all levels under 4.5
Write it down.
I have also noticed that it's very very hard to attack a weak or average serve.
Many hard returns will go wide, and many others will go long, and others will laned in the net.
A whole lot of others just go right back to the server.
At under 4.5, a weak serve is simply not going to get punished consistently,
and hugely impact the match in any direction.
So, either you get to a 4.5 caliber serve, and get free points when your 1st serve (and even 2nd) goes in,
or it really doesn't matter if your serve is 3.0, 3.5, or 4.0.
It will not get attacked with any sort of consistency, you will not get free points at any of those levels, and ultimately your 3.0/3.5/4.0 serve will have almost no impact match scores.
If you're serve is not 4.5 caliber, it might as well be strong 3.0 caliber.
You'll get the same match results.
Based on what I've seen, I'd say my serve is low 4.5, b/c I have yet to see a 4.0 who serves as hard I as. 1st % is around 50%, like the pros.
I sometimes get free points with my 2nd serve. But, I have lost to guys with much weaker serves. Both 1st and 2nd.
But, if you're serve is not going to get to 4.5 caliber, don't even bother improving it.
Focus on any and every other aspect of your game. (volley, approach, slice, lob, FH/BH, etc)
Also, I do not give a damn if you agree or not.
