Nad is the master of being obliterated in any given match and then somehow coming back from whatever apparently ailed him every single time and winning more large events

He'll get reamed here and then probably make the IW final at a minimum

He will play like crap for 2.5 more months, then come alive at end of May.

Hmm... Federer handled Kyrgios comfortably at the US Open - if he "lives for these matches" still, I'd have expected a tighter scoreline at least. Of course, Nick has often shone when playing the top guys in the past but I've yet to see him really show signs of consistency and top form for quite some time. A few years back, when Nick was getting a lot of stick for his attitude, I was definitely the kind of fan who was seeing it as something which would improve in a few years with age, but I'm not so sure. Someone with his level of talent when he plays smart and consistent should have done a lot more damage even just on the regular ATP Tour by now. Similarly - not for attitude reasons - I think there are a whole cohort of players like Edmund and Chung who showed up for a few quality weeks and now it's almost like they've gone backwards.

USO’18 fedr vs nick is the one outlier of their h2h. All three others were decided in the third by TBs. He more often than not gets up for big matches (5-6 vs Big 3 and only 3 blowout losses) and will be motivated to avenge the 2&1 spanking in the Beijing final just two months after that TRS’17 QF.

Kyrgios has revealed he played well against Seppi because Nadal awaits in the next round.

Sounds like the mythological motivated Kyrgios has come to town. Nadal is getting recked!!

What makes you think he can beat RAFA here ? Both of his knees are taped up and he looked very suspicious with his movement with Seppi match. Nick lost 90 % of the points when the rallie went beyond 3 shots. He will have to run 2-3 times more with RAFA that his previous match. So what do you think will happen in RAFA match ????????????

Because he's motivated. Motivated Kyrgios is unbeatable ;)

If injuries stop him winning then it's a moral victory.

Maybe this will be that one match he tries. But only if he is winning. If things turn bad he will fade so he can always say, "Well, if I was really trying I would hav beat him like before".

I like Nick hitting high topspin to the backhand and hard flat to the forehand in this clip.

Rafael's serve is too much for Kyrgios to take, while Rafael routinely gets into Kyrgios' service games :)

What a choke job!
Nadal not breaking after having 0-40 twice and also having 3 match points as well as winning more points (121-111) in that match. Absolutely screatching my head

lucky Rafael lost or he'd be spending a lot of time on hardcourt this week for minimal reward....
this year has been flawless, only had to play 21 short sets at the AO and now hardly had to play this week :)
and Rafael proved he was the better player in this match anyway-

Kyrgios def. Nadal 36 76 76

Nadal had 10 break points on Kyrgios serve, and only converted 1.

Kyrgios only had 1 break point on Nadal's serve, and didn't convert it.

Nadal had match point in the 3rd set tie-breaker, but served a double-fault.

Nadal won 121 points, Kyrgios won 111 points.

What a game Kyrgios was phenomenal!

Nadal took so much time, where was the play clock? Even wasting time when receiving. Very unsportsmanlike.

Karma was served tonight.

I have never seen Nadal worse.

In one - 1 - return game he held up his racquet five - 5 - times to slow down Nick :(

At one point, Nick served an ace, but Rafa said "NO NO NO NO!" (because he wasn't ready, despite standing in ready position), and the umpire ordered to replay the point... Ombeleebel. And people call Nadal humble...? He didn't even do a proper handshake. Interested to see what Nadal fans have to say about his behaviour.

I think Rafa is probably off the mark when he said that Nick had no respect for him. He obviously respects him enough to get motivated enough to beat him in the way he can't against lesser players (witness his comical performance in Delray Beach last week).

By going all out to beat him Nick has actually paid Rafa the highest compliment he possibly can. Wonder if he can now muster up the same motivation for Stan?

Motivated Nick defies the odds, injury and bulls rather blatant gamesmanship to serve his way to the win. The first time since 2015 Nadal has lost having held match point.

Motivated Nick truly is a force of nature. Will he have any motivation left for the next round?

That's some strange logic. But in a way it may work out for him, if he manages to get through HC season without spending hours and hours grinding away. It's all about clay for him now, because he MAY be the only person stopping Earth's Mightiest Warrior from another NCYGS. ;)

Fed doesn't look good enough now to win anything important unless a miracle happens and he re-finds his return game. Two breaks today in three sets. I can never do the math mentally, exactly, but I'm pretty sure that puts him in servebot territory. He was at 14.71% of return games after the AO, and it's not getting much better. If this keeps up, his career is over.

Bad sportsmanship from Nadal, but Nick trolled him big time, so I can understand Rafa was frustrated at the end. All that kick-serving and especially that super slow underhand club player's serve that Kyrgios tried to serve at some point after seeing that Nadal as ever stands a kilometre behind the service line was cringeworthy.
