Good for him. Now he's taking care of his grandchildren's grandchildren. All his money making abilities dry up the minute he isn't a tennis God. Strike while the iron's hot, I say.

A million bucks a night just to turn up and play whoever you want. LOL even an idiot would do that.

RafaIsBack - thanks a lot :) Wonderful job as always :) I especially liked the RG trophy sequence at the end.

One of the Rafa fans on MTF uses the term 'Fearhand' for his amazing shot. I like it a lot.

Rafa got nominated for the Laureus award in 2 categories :) What do you think about his chances?

Thanks for the feedback guys ;) I hope he wins the best athlete Laureus Award but it will be tough because LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo and Usain Bolt are also nominated :?

Doesn't Michael use it here?.

Are those awards US based?, if so a US based sport is more likely to win.

Despite not being American, Nadal already won Laureus athlete of the year in 2011.
And Nadal won Laureus newcomer of the year in 2006.
If Nadal wins Laureus comeback player of the year he will be the only man ever to have won all 3 Laureus awards.

Michael probably does but fearhand is one of Brad Gilbert's kooky inventions.

Don't think it's US based although Laureus has some activity in the US. It's a world wide venture and there's some interesting background information here. http://www.laureus.com/content/introduction-laureus Said it had its kickoff in Monaco a decade ago with sports figures from around the world although I've read somewhere that its headquartered in London. Most of the previous winners have been from places other than the US and I think that's why it's gotten so much prestige from everyone.

Besides being a sportsman, Rafa is a businessman. He owns two hotels in Cozumel.

Rafael Nadal has invested $13.17 million dollars into two hotels he bought on the Mexican Caribbean island of Cozumel. ¤¤

Ah ok, I was wondering what he was doing there. It's a paradise, ok, I can see it, but it's not your typical "beach holiday moment" of a tennis player's year.
I remembered some kind of deal in that erea, but I didn't think it was in Mexico.

Anyway, there was a tournament last week in Mexico. Rafael Nadal was in the country, and this is what he did. LOL.

Rafa interview before Indian Wells:

http://www.palmspringslife.com/Palm-Springs-Life/March-2014/Reigning-Rafa-Returns/

His dark eyes never stray from the ball during a rally, and his feet dance like a boxer’s beneath legs thick with muscle. No. 1 in the world — again — Rafael Nadal is a fluid portrait of fitness, intensity, and focus. In a recent interview, Nadal describes his passion for tennis, his amazing comeback, and his love of the desert and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

PSL: BNP Paribas Open unveils its new 8,000-seat Stadium 2, which promises to be much more intimate. Do you enjoy having the fans closer, or do you prefer the larger venues?

Nadal: I love the small, cozy stadiums but also enjoy very much the center court of Indian Wells or the U.S. Open. They both have pretty special feelings, but different.

PSL: What is your diet like during the BNP Paribas Open? Do you cook for yourself while in Indian Wells? If you eat out, what are some of your favorite places?

Nadal: I am very lucky. Mr. [Larry] Ellison’s people at Porcupine Creek treat me and my team very well. I also sometimes go to nearby restaurants to have sushi or steaks.

PSL: We know you like to play golf when you’re here. How else do you entertain yourself when not playing or training?

Nadal: Not much more do I do, believe me. Tennis, competition, practice, and my beloved golf take most of my time. And I have to say I enjoy it very much — wouldn’t change that week!

PSL: You came back last year from a difficult knee injury and six months off. Were there times when you questioned if you could get back to the same level of play?

Nadal: For sure. As a matter of fact, Indian Wells was kind of a turning point for me [in 2013]. I got to Indian Wells with a lot of doubts about winning on hard court. Winning in Indian Wells and defeating top players boosted my confidence.

PSL: Your comeback has been phenomenal. Do you think 2013 was the best year of your career?

Nadal: It was definitely one of the most meritorious years, since I started the season late without playing the first Grand Slam of the year and managing to end at No. 1. It was a very emotional year.

PSL: What is one of your most memorable off-court experiences in Indian Wells?

Nadal: I have so many memories that it is difficult to say. Having dinners with Larry Ellison and his guests is a privilege for me, and to play at amazing golf courses [including some] rounds with Freddie Couples. Also to play soccer on that pitch next to the practice courts [at Indian Wells Tennis Garden]. Those two weeks in the desert are magic.

Indian Wells men's draw ceremony has just started.

Indian Wells Men's draw so far.

Nadal faces Stepanek or Istomin in R2.
Possible R3 opponents of Nadal: Tim Smyczek /Jack Sock.
Stanislas Wawrinka lands with Nadal in the top half.
Andy Murray lands in Rafael Nadal's quarter.

Roger Federer lands in the VERY loaded top half, to face Wawrinka in quarters and Murray/Nadal in semis. Opens vs a qualifier.

Nadal-Wawrinka is more interesting than Nadal-Federer, but hard to believe Wawrinka will beat Federer. Probably the most lopsided h2h in the top 10.

Yummy. :)

Here's how the directions from the photographer went:

Turn a little to your left... A little more... More.. Another 90 degrees... Just a little more... Perfect!

Doesn't get much better than that.
She's also got better paddling technique than Rafa in those photos (although the kayak may simply be too short for Rafa)

"Other than a third-round exit on his tournament debut in 2004, Nadal has always reached the semi-finals or better in Indian Wells. He won the title in 2007, '09 and '13, and boasts a 41-6 event record."

Larry Ellison - the owner of the Indian Wells tournament - is a big Rafa fan.

Larry Ellison's own words.

"Although he spends much of his time at the tournament watching Roger Federer, whom he calls “the greatest tennis player that ever lived,” and Nadal, “the best athlete to ever play tennis,” Ellison is conversant on a long roster of players, up and down the rankings."

Yeah, that Ellison guy was at the FO final last year, obviously a huge Rafa supporter. Nadal even stays at his place when he plays IW.

Larry Ellison's own words.
¤¤ Inside Tennis asks: If the tennis gods said, ‘Okay, Larry, you can watch one player, who would it be? You have seen Mac, Roger, you are close to Rafa.

Larry Ellison: That’s an impossible question. Roger is so elegant, Rafa sometimes looks like a leopard out there with a racquet in his hand. You see the wonderful athleticism of Nadal, the grace of Federer, and McEnroe has his feel and touch. They all have so much. It is important to appreciate what each one of them brings and how each of them made the sport great.

IT: You can argue that no other sportsman is more humble than Rafa. What’s special about that young man?
LE: He is special. He is always trying to get better at what he does. He takes nothing for granted. He goes out there and fights hard for every point and appreciates what he has been able to accomplish in his young life. He deals so well with his responsibilities to the game and to the fans, It gives him a humility that made him enormously popular.¤¤

Larry Ellison's own words.
¤¤ Ellison Puts His Money Where His Forehand Is.
With the unique access his status affords, Ellison, an ardent tennis fan and player, stepped onto the court during the tournament with the 10-time Grand Slam champion and current No. 2, Rafael Nadal, whom Ellison casually mentioned was “staying at my place.”
“I hit with him for an hour and a half the other day, which was quite an experience,” Ellison, 67, said before gushing about Nadal’s incomparable topspin. “The ball, when it hits the ground, people think it just kicks up high to Roger’s backhand. That’s kind of not the problem. The problem is it kicks away from you sometimes, kicks towards you sometimes. It’s really a difficult shot. He puts just massive amounts of spin, and he can also obviously go very big.” ¤¤

^^Good news, MN :)

Guys, I'm thinking that we should start a new Nadal news thread. We can call it "Nadal News 2.0" or something. This thread is a bit tedious to open because every time I have to refresh it twice, to be able to access it. It's even more tedious to post in this thread, via mobile.

So if you guys all agree, then let's start a new one. We can request mods to Lock this one up, so people can still check out the older posts.

Mmmm, I'm not sure about that. I think if it's a fresh, new, uncorrupted thread that we'll get a lot of troll traffic. I have a feeling that the extra step of having to refresh keeps a lot of them away right now.

why his this thread ALWAYS got extra pages ahead of the current page that don't even exist ?.

can't that blip be easily fixed ? :???:

You can all thank the legend of Zilla - B***Zilla for this.

That iconic poster posted so much...well lets just say, questionable material, that several dozen pages had to be deleted, and that caused all the problems you see today.
