Yes there are definitely stringbeds that favor different strokes. I've attacked that problem by having different racquets for doubles where I need control and flatter strokes and singles, where I need more topspin strokes. That way I can still use a string bed that offers comfort, spin and touch in equal amounts.

18x20 in the doubles racket, 16x18 in the singles. O/V or gut/poly in either or both and I'm good to play.

I’m on that page as well. 6.1 95 18x20 for doubles a good bit because of how well it controls the ball on returns and the more powerful RF97 16x19 for singles. String choices basically the same. Once I warm up with one of those two frames, ready to go. Not the case with many other racquets have used over the years.

How about same racquet same string +2lbs for doubles.:p

I do agree with @Dartagnan64 that I find less need/reward for topspin, pace and small targets in doubles than singles. The exception of that is kick serve ... that tends to go along with better topspin string (not always).

Spin on serves is the only place I miss a spin frame in doubles . But with my 93P I can hit corners so well with my first serve that i still get good results. .

i've definitely done the same racket/different tensions for singles/doubles. I've just found I really like tighter string beds in doubles and more open string beds in singles. Admittedly I've taken to using my 93P some in singles and it's not been found wanting yet.

As much as I like to tinker with my setups, match results are far more dependent on the 4F's of tennis: Focus, footwork, fitness and fortune

It just seems easier to keep the ball low with the 18x20. Used 18x20 in college and open level tennis so going to it from the RF97 is an easy transfer.

I demo'd a 18x20 Blade. Loved it. But kept hitting into the net.
There is definitely a need to increase swing path angle / brush up more switching from open string pattern to 18x20. I have to consciously do that during warm-up to re-tune my strokes, particularly on my 2hbh.

My18x20 frames are strung in the mid to upper 40’s with full poly. This 54/50 multi/multi set up hits really well but tension too high with mains and crosses creates too low of a launch angle for me as well. Typically around a 5lb difference in tension between my 16x19 and 18x20 frames.

im back on a multi kick and velocity is my favorite. i dont LIKE multis because it never feels like the string is grabbing the ball on topspin forehands and kickers ... if that makes sense. i also have to string them more tightly, which seems in turn to make everything come off the stringbed at a lower angle.

but having that extra softness in the stringbed, even in a hybrid, is just so nice. its like discovering cushioned shoes as a runner

NXT Duramax is low powered and well cushioned. It has a lot of polyurethane in it, but doesn't feel rubbery. I used it once and liked it, but it was a little too thick gauge for my 18x20 racquets. Other reviews have commented that it is very durable for a multi.

I have many of the same old racquet; I use the inherently heavier ones strung more loosely when playing in slower/colder conditions, and the inherently lighter ones strung at higher tensions, and/or with less resilient string, when playing in faster/warmer conditions. Making quality - lack of - control work for me, not against me lol

Torn between trying Origin/ Vel or X-one/ Vel next. Out of NXT so might as well try one of these since I have to buy string.

Velocity is a horrible cross string. The coating wears off super quick and the stringbed loses snapback and becomes a ball fuzz, no spin magnet.

Plays really well with another more powerful Multi in the mains.

Where does this rank in your Velocity combos so far? Actually, do you mind posting a running ranking update when you post your thoughts on each new hybrid combo? Thanks.

Several of these guys on here have done a great deal more testing than I with Velocity but I can tell you what I have found.
Guess it is more of what you are looking for out of a set up. My preference is Gut/poly so I am consistently trying to replicate that with a Soft main set up. Velocity is low powered enough and doesn’t wear out the multi mains as fast as a slick poly.
Preference:
VS Touch 1.30/4g 1.25. 57/54-59/56 ($28)
Klip Legend 1.30/Max Power 57/54-59/56 ($18)

Velocity:Overall Playability
NXT/Velocity 55/52 ($14)
GMS/ Velocity 55/52 ($4)
Velocity/Velocity 54/52 ($5.50)
Velocity/Alu Power 54/51 ($13)
Velocity /Weiss Cannon 54/51 ($6.50)

*X-one Biphase next set up.

What's the difference between regular NXT string and NXT power ? I guess nxt power is supposed to have more power, from the name of it but what about control feel department ?

Thanks! Looks like the trend is clear. Velocity as cross seems to be the doing well in your tests, which echoes what others have said.

Interesting, of all the coated strings, I find velocity lasts longest. Also Natural lasts longer than Black and hard courts help it last longer than clay. Black Velocity on Clay is a death knell for longevity. But Natural is acceptable and best if you are mixing up play between hard and clay courts.

NXT Power and NXT Tour are the same string I believe and it is a softer string with more fibers. Supposedly more of a gut like feel than NXT Comfort and they claim that NXT Power has better durability than NXT Comfort.

I might try revisiting OGSM/V. As I remember, it hit like a very controlled OGSM or Velocity with feeling. Spin was better than full bed OGSM. Not going to replace poly or even some of the other multi hybrids. But it just felt good to hit with.

I still have some OGSM left on my reel which I used to hybrid my son's frame from 13-14 (and my own) with poly.

Yeah, can't beat the price!

For sure, I had a reel of OGSM 1.30 and a reel of black Velocity 1.30. Its not bad in terms of playability and a cheap set up to get through the winter. Used a 3lb differential, may go 4lb next time. Instead of 55/52 going to try 54/50.
On the road traveling and have three Red/Black RF97’s strung with Tourna Big Hitter Black-7 at 52lbs. Amazing how much stiffer that feels when the temperature is 40-50 degrees colder.

What do you think would be the more durable main ... OGSM 16 or Velocity 16? I just broke origin/v and fb v (about to go) much quicker than my 20ish hours. I haven't been keeping track of hours, but my guess 10-15ish. It's possible next spring I will be back trying to find a more durable non-poly non-gut main. I may just go back and try upping the tension on fb v because I have been playing great with fb v 54/52. Maybe 54/54 ... 55/53 ... or even fb v 55.

As a cross to HyperG, OGSM survived longer than V. I didn't have OGSM/V for too long to see how it stood the test of time.

I haven't played with sg for a long time, and even then mainly prince sg. I have suspected velocity 16 was just as durable as any sg ... but total guess. Velocity doesn't fray ... so it seems like the equivalent of a less stiff sg imo. The reason for the question is the comments here (ttw) about OGSM durability, and I had noted Chris's positive comments in the TW review. Also ... tension maint ... sg vs multi??? Also ... OGSM 16 stiffness 183 ... quite a bit more than V (I guess, we don't have tw v 16 #s).

In the RF97 full bed Hyper G and Tourbite felt stiff even at 50lbs. Used Hyper G/OGSM and Tour Bite/ OGSM and got 10+ hours and ended up cutting strings out every time. Never broke a string. 48/52. Velocity mains with several different polys I couldn’t find a set up that had the playability that I wanted.

HyperG/Velocity lasted about 6-8hrs. Velocity was shred to pieces. OGSM survived with at least maintaining its core.
OGSM survived longer against Cyclone fwiw.

Haven’t compared them that closely. Been playing with NXT Comfort lately but interested in NXT Power because it is supposed to be more gut like, last longer, and is the same price.

More Gut like meaning like it will hold tension well and have great power ? with these multifilaments composed of hundreds of fibers, they often lose tension quickly which is bit of a problem

I don't understand the confusion with the NXT line.

NXT comfortable, quick response
NXT Power a step up from NXT, gut-like
NXT Duramax durable, comfortable due to PU, good spin
NXT Control is about 1/2 poly

Maybe the marketing on the packaging is confusing. Often some descriptive words can be mistaken as part of the string name. NXT looks like it might be called NXT Comfort, but it's just NXT.

Softer and twice as many filaments as regular NXT. They make a statement about it being more durable as well. Going to try some for comparison to NXT Comfort.

You can post all you want here!!
Stringer's world only sell 15L OGSM...
Please give me links.
They sell OGSM Super at 16g too, which may or may not be same formula as the regular OGSM. I think due to its low price, stocking sets are not economical.

Honestly, if I were you, I'd just buy a reel of the 17G as your base string. You can use it full bed or hybrid, very versatile and arm-friendly.
