Race to YE#1 2023 - Djokovic v. Alcaraz

The less interesting discussion at this point is who will be #1 this year, as it's looking all but inevitable that it will be Djokovic.

It really did come down to the final 2 tournaments. Unfortunately for Alcaraz, Djokovic showed his best and he did not.

The Sinner

Semi-Pro
There is now only one scenario left for Alcaraz to end as YE #1 - he needs to win the YEC undefeated while hoping Djokovic doesn't win any match

If Djokovic wins a match, or if Alcaraz loses a match then the YE #1 goes to Novak
If that’s the case, then it’s sealed. Djokovic HAS the YE No1.

Now that Alcaraz lost to Zverev in his first RR match, it is impossible for anyone to have more points than Djokovic this year, even if Djokovic hits line judge in the throat and gets defaulted and lose all points from this tournament.

True and i also think it slightly prolongs Novak's total weeks guaranteeing him a little more than 406 weeks now, something like extra week or something...there is 390 points buffer now and i think at absolutely worst Novak can defeat Tsitsipas and add 200 more (in case he loses to Sinner next!), i'm also not so sure Alcaraz can defeat Medvedev here...so that's another 200 points potentially!...

Not yet, because Jan 7th is the potential 407th week.

United Cup, which starts the week before Jan 7th, offers up to 500 points. Djokovic is also losing 250 points from Adelaide on that date

What would have happened if Alcaraz won all 5 matches and Djokovic got disqualified in the final by hitting the main judge with his tennis racket?

I mean Djokovic already received the trophy?

The trophy is purely symbolic. I assume it would just have been re-awarded to Alcaraz to reflect what would actually go onto the books
