Roland Garros 2014 Draw : Analyses & Predictions

My prediction: Djokovic will not reach final at RG

Can't make any prediction on Nadal. There's too much uncertainties around Nadal's game right now, IMHO.

Ferrer slipping to no.5 before RG tilted the balance a lot. Now one of the top 2 can have both Ferrer and Stan in his half. And if past luck is any indication, it will be Djoko who will have this double whammy while Nadal may get Berdych and Federer :(

Let's hope that finally, Nadal will have a very difficult draw while Djokovic will have a really easy draw. It is time to happen after all those cakewalks Nadal had on GSs in recent years.

Who is that girl in your avatar Chico ?

Does anyone else feel like Ferrer is the third best clay court player at Roland Garros? The last two years he has lost to Nadal. In 2011 he lost 8-6 in the Fifth to Monfils. I think none of the top four want to see his name for a quarterfinal match. Even Fed. Reason being, to beat Ferrer they know it is going to take a very physical toll with very little easy points. It's hard to picture anyone not named Nadal and Novak making the final, but I think Ferrer is the third best in this format.

Ferrer is awesome on clay. I'd think him a very deserving RG winner if he ever pulled it off.

Pathetic professional jinxers at it again. How sad!

The draw will be made on Friday afternoon Paris time.

Ideal draw:

Nadal v Simon, Cilic or Pospisil R32

Nadal v Ferrer, Murray or Raonic QF - and hopefully Berdych ends in Djokovic's section.

Nadal v Federer (but preferably Nishikori) SF

Nadal v Djokovic final

My predictions:

Wawrinka will lose within the first three rounds.

Federer will not make the semifinals.

One of the rising stars (Nishikori, Dimitrov, Raonic) will make the semis.

Nadal and Djokovic will contest the final (bold prediction, I know).

Agree with the first three, fully plausible. But the last one , don't think so :)

Predictions...

Wawrinka will make the semis...

Unfortunately Federer wont, maybe quarters...

Nadal to overcome a scare early on but overcome it and make the final...

Djokovic to win Roland Garros 2014...

If I rate potential opponents for the top 2 in the order of difficulty (1 being the most difficult), this is what I think. Of course match up counts, like Fed is too easy for Nadal but may not be so for Djoker, but overall, we are just going by how dangerous a player is.

SF : 1. Stan 2. Federer

QF : 1. Ferrer 2. Murray 3. Raonic 4. Berdych (Murray/Raonic are not a lock to make the QF, but if they do, they will be more difficult opponents than Berdych)

R16 : 1. Nishi 2.Isner 3.Gasquet 4. Dimitrov

Of course, the draw may not play out as on paper and an upset or two can completely tilt the balance in one player's favor.

Wow ! Nadal's draw is unreal compared to what he has been getting over the years....I don't remember him getting a draw half as difficult at any slam , ever.

Let me see :

Djokovic
Stan
Ferrer/Dimitrov/Anderson
Almagro/Haas
Pospisil
Thiem
Ginepri

If this draw plays according to the seedings (and that is a big IF) and Nadal actually meets and beats all these guys , his 9th RG will be the most memorable and most deserved one.

Again, a lame & pathetic attempt at discrediting Nadal!

Fed fanboy handbook Rule no. 56- When Nadal is in worst possible form, name every draw he gets as "the toughest draw he's ever had" and that "it would be most deserved title if he wins".
Strike the man, when he's down & out!

Perhaps you should check LordRoger's slam draws in his "prime", no?

I haven't seen his draw, but no way Pospisil is making the third round. Why did you pick him over his opponents?

I just went with the seeding, he was the highest seed. Other options are Leonardo Mayer and Gabashvili.

Something I though about:
W 2006: Nadal lost in 4 to Fed
W 2007: Nadal lost in 5 to Fed
W 2008: Nadal won it

RG 2012: Djokovic lost in 4 to Nadal
RG 2013: Djokovic lost in 5 to Nadal
RG 2014: Djokovic to win it?

I hope so. But the score of last year's semi already was reminiscent of the W 2008 final. I thought Nadal succeeded where Fed had failed. But there is still hope for this year !

Well, the right comparison is between the scores of W 2007 and RG 2013. Nadal lost the 5th 6-2, Djoker lost it 9-7.

These two predictions are incompatible. Dimitrov is in Nadal's quarter and Nishikori/Raonic are in Djokovic's quarter.

A very strange draw, too - it looks like Rafa has to play eight rounds instead of the usual seven.

Naddie pulled a baddie this time. No way in the world he survives that.

How do you think Nishikori will do? He should be dangerous if he's recovered from his injury, but I don't know if he has. It's been two weeks since it happened.

All should become apparent in his first match, Kilzan is a decent, inform and dangerous first round opponent. If he rolls by him losing less then 12 games he is a contender but his health can deteriate quickly so I still would have little faith in him getting to a semi-finals.

Isn't it actually the other way around? Isn't he supposed to be complaining about how Rafa fluked his way into a miracle draw and you're supposed to be bemoaning its difficulty?

I might have to consult a few more handbooks or scry into my crystal for more clarity on this issue.

VB is utterly confused and on the verge of panic at the moment. They will find a way to thumbs down you and find a problem with your post even if you are praising their idol ;-)

According the Fed fanboy handbook, which has been co-authored by the "genius" sbengte, the rule #56 clearly states that:
You announce Nadal's draw as "tough", if & only if he is in worst possible form heading into a tournament. So that when he eventually loses, you can say "Rafa failed to win again, when he finally got a hard draw"/ "He can only win with easy draws".

I disagree. A better strategy is to say that Rafa has an easy draw, so, if he loses, one can point and laugh and say "wow, what a clown, losing to [player x] - Nadal's the worst player in history!!!"

But then again, I am consulting the 2nd edition, with a foreward by David Foster Wallace...

Better take it up with OP. He'll make necessary amendments to the Handbook.

If you see his thread posting history, he has been obsessing about draws for a long time. He keeps on cribbing every now & then.
He also specialises in starting Jinx threads for Nadal.

Apparently not, according to our resident wunderkind thumbsdowner. I am wondering if she is a Nadal hater in disguise, trying to say Nadal has an easy draw so Nadal comes across as laughable if he loses
