Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

In 2011 Federer should have lost that award just for Djokovic got lucky jibe. In 2009 also for that nasty comment on Djokovic about him not having heart to fight.

In 2016 he played like 5 tournaments and still won it lol. I refuse to believe that players select the winner. If they did it makes no sense that the only player to win the award besides Federer in the last 15 years also happens to be the second most popular player on tour. I mean, it's not like Federer and Nadal did anything differently in 2010 and 2018. It's a bogus award.

St Nick is the ultimate anti-establishment hero. He never won the award.

This award is the ultimate joke in tennis.;) In other sports the recipients are usually some unsung heroes, or guys you've never heard of before, while in tennis the endless ego of the greedy maestro just needs his annual fix.
It's like when in North Korea Kim Jong-Un is voted for sexiest man alive for 15 years in a row.
Just monumental joke...

Same as Julia Roberts being the most beautiful woman on planet :D

But don't you know Fred is the gentleman of Tennis? He is so great that he should win everything!

If matches were won by the ATP establishment awarding points like in gymnastics or skating, Fedr would win everything.

Pardon me but why Paradorn? Also, why no the Great Sampras? Took very little time before serving or in between serves, only bounced one or two times, paid regular dues to his opponents, almost never resorted to trash talk and always let his racquet do all the talking? Surely something isn’t right in this equation?

The time taken between points is not relevant. Sampras's serve came naturally to him; he did not need to think about it too much so why should he be rewarded for it? Having said that, I totally agree that something is not right with these awards.

But isn't it a sportsmanship award? I get Rafter. He was a gentleman through and through but so was Sampras. Not even once while Rafter four times?

And yes, serves came very naturally to Sampras as does Federer's whole game to him or so they say and by the same token, clay comes very naturally to Nadal, etc. but that wasn't the point. The point was he did go by the same rules and conducted himself very well on the court. Very rarely he'd lose his temper or throw racquets etc. If anything, he's the epitome of sportsmanship and yet, not a single award.

Personally, I don't care for this award lol but just wanted to point out how bad the award is.

The fact that Federer has won it almost every year in the past 15 years is flabbergasting.
The award was named after Edberg because of his truly exceptional sportsmanship, independently of his popularity.
It was then subverted so that sportsmanship became another word for popularity.

It diminishes Edberg that a player who has hissy fits and is sometimes (and shouldn't sometimes be enough to disqualify him, especially in comparison to Edberg who only won it a few times?) rude - and I'm not saying he's the rudest, just that to qualify for this award you should be exceptional in this department, which Edberg was, not someone who behaves cordially like most professionals do - gets to be known as the player with the most sportsmanship awards of all time.

All objectivity has been lost since the media, pundits and fanboys dubbed Federer the GOAT even before he could lay a claim to that very subjective notion.
With the GOAT epithet, everything else had to be contaminated with his all-time greatness, including things where others were and have been superior to him.

Luckily for Federer, and mostly to Federer fanboys, Edberg is too classy to even make an issue out of this.
Federer, however, could have at least on one occasion signalled the fact that perhaps he doesn't deserve to receive as many of these awards, especially compared to the man who was synonymous with this human quality, but chose to remain silent about it.

Maybe they'll finally go ahead and do the ultimate infamy of renaming it the Roger Federer Sportsmanship Award (why not, after all he's the guy who has won it a zillion times because players are his fans first and his rivals second), with Federer presenting it every year (and the caveat that nobody is allowed to win more of those than the GOAT), while Edberg - sportsmanlike, as usual - remains unaffected by the whole thing.

If there's a gulf in sportsmanship, it is probably smaller than the gulf in class between these two.

The fact that Ferrer, Delpo, and Nishikori never won this award says all you need to know about the system. Federer is a great sportsman but let's not pretend he deserved this award EVERY YEAR

I say let the umpires have the vote on best sportsmanship. They after all see more matches per year than the players most likely, and see the players at their worst close up, see how they interact with fans, ball boys/girls, etc.

Maybe make it umpires who have umped so many matches each year.

Just 2009 alone shows how fukced up this award is. Fed cried in AO, smashed a racket against Novak in Miami, and had a bitchfit against Delpo at the USO. Like wtf
Crying after a gut wrenching loss like that is not bad sportsmanship. Even breaking one racquet in a season isn't that rare for ATP players.
I agree about the USO outburst though. Not egregious in itself, but there were players on tour who never had episodes like that and didn't get the award.

In my opinion, most ATP tennis players misunderstand the importance of this award. They consider it a vote on the best ambassador of tennis, they include into their choses their sympathies for the nominated tennis players, an important factor is, of course, how much the nominated tennis player is successful. The alone sportsmanship itself is only a sub-factor, as evidenced by the Fed's victory in 2009 (despite the Jack Garner incident) or Nadal's victory in 2010 (when Nadal's behavior has been criticized several times).

The solution would be for referees to vote instead of tennis players. They can be assumed, that referees to have a greater degree of impartiality than tennis players, that referees will not judge the behavior of backstage tennis players or their off-court activities, but purely their behavior at the court. As Kyrgios shows openly, tennis players themselves can be fans and haters of other tennis players.

What a joke of an award. Henry Kissinger and Barack Obama both won the Nobel Peace Prize and yet bombed the **** out of countries.
