Despite a few moments of unsportsmanlike conduct, he is generally an excellent sportsman. The Edberg award is voted on by other players, so it does say something.

Federer has denied Nadal many awards, including the fan favorite award which he never won. Nadal can only hope Federer retire so he has a chance to win the award.

That's fixed too, because Federer is the only one who is nominated EVERY year along with other spurious players. There are many other players with impeccable sportsmanship. If different people win it, it would be more meaningful.

When Gimelstob asked the crowd if they were satisfied with Fed winning some people said No.

No surprises here tennis marketing at full force!

Just wait for the Federer Grand Finale Exhibition Retirement World Tour ® (second ring seats starting at only $500 including free commemorable signed picture)) we all know is coming to literally milk the last drop out of it.

A sad state of affairs, tennis deserves better!

I don't think fans bother to vote because it's seems like a foregone conclusion and a waste of time. Are they really saying that over the past 13 years Fed was the only who demonstrated good sportsmanship apart from when Rafa won it in 2010?

I don't think the fans bother to vote for the Sportsmanship Award, either.

I think it's clear the snail-mail fans had an indirect effect on the Sportsmanship Award. With the ATP Players Council (and - remind me - who was the president until this year?) getting flooded with letters from the fringe constituency, these players were no doubt biased towards voting for Federer.

Because obviously the social media presence represents a true reality.

This doesn't really tell us anything as he won it 8 times before he was even sponsored by Moet and Chandon.

Perhaps the reason they sponsored him was due to the fact that he had won the award multiple times before?

and you are taking octobrina10's posts seriously? and asking a valid question? come on you must be out of your mind trying to have a reasonable conversation with that kind of a member.:)

I treat him no difference than TDK. Too much of his crap is the reason he's on many poster's ignore list.

There are 11 players in the council, so it does not amount to much in the vote. Where do you have the information about a flood of letters?

Well deserved??? What the hell has he done this year to deserve this award  Show me just one tiny sportsmanship Federer moment in the past 365 days?

He is the one of the VERY few players takes less than 25 sec. in-between points…. This “sportsmanship” is non-existence with most of other players…
This alone a BEST sportsmanship, considering time-off every player taking nowadays (like RAFA Faking injury) and others does whenever they are getting defeated….

I don't understand why the players vote for Federer. Why don't they hate him?
He embarrasses them, makes them look like 3.5 players most of the time.

Nadalovic convincingly beat most of the tour too, but the way they do it (long rallies waiting for errors) is surely less embarrassing for the opponents than Federer rushing the net, shutting you down in 1-2 shots, or wrong-footing you again and again.

Fed is very popular in the US. Even people who never watch tennis (and don't even know how many slams there are) will pick Fed if asked. I guess it's the gillette/rolex commercials lol. Fed is a household name like Michael Jordan in bb or Tiger in golf. And the US is the biggest market. It's all about marketing these days.

What makes you say US is the biggest market for tennis? Tennis popularity in the US, I thought, was almost at an all time low.
