^That's not all that bad. Atleast you're not Spurs, loosing at home to Hull today. So Spurs are bottom and NewCastle are second bottom. Ross, what say you?

True, hugely disappointing though especially after the loss to Wigan last week.

Newcastle just came back from two goals down against Everton so looks like quite a bit of struggling going on recently with top half teams.

Well, I wasn't that surprised at the result. The confidence of both teams couldn't have been more diametrically opposed given recent results, and for good reason - Hull have thus far been the successful surprise package in the PL, whilst Tottenham have edged out even Newcastle in the atrocious and abysmal stakes. No, losing to Hull wasn't so shocking, but some of the preceding games certainly were. And the alarming thing is, we've yet to play the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U, etc (though we did of course actually draw quite creditably with Chelsea - which as a matter of fact, is one result that makes me think just perhaps there is some hope for us after all.)

What I think adds in some ways to the atmosphere of confusion and dismay is that quite why we are at where we are at isn't so easy to pinpoint. I have come to the view that in as much as they are all responsible as well as being linked in various ways (for example, Levy wanted Comolli, who wanted to get rid of Jol and bring in Ramos... or re the transfers situation, Comolli and Ramos wanted players like Mellito and Arshavin, who Levy wouldn't stump up the cash for), basically I reckon they'll ride it out for as long as they possibly can - and so they should.

But when push comes to shove, and when and if relegation looms large (and it's already more than a consideration), I'm pretty sure Comolli will be the first to be got rid of. And I would have thought it highly that Levy will want to bring in Venables (who's lately been agitating in the media for a DOF role or even better, manager's role) or Avram Grant (I can see Fena raising a knowing, amused eyebrow at this prospect!), should Spurs still be languishing in the bottom 3 come the end of 2008.

Then finally, should the whole shaky edifice look like crumbling amid the chaos (think NUFC), then maybe Daniel Levy will sell and be gone (and to make clear: I consider he's made some costly errors, but he's also got the clubs interests at heart and has tried - and with some commitment - to fulfill some deeply-held ambitions and indeed dreams...) Cue: takeover, new manager, new players, etc, etc.

Anyway, all I'd add is, as I said recently here, Ramos is paid shed-loads of mulah and it's really time he earned it... I mean, to a layman, it appears he's going from game to game trying out a slightly different team with slightly different tactics every time - and every time coming a cropper... WTF is that all about?!... enough said.

Now where's the single malt?

Ross,

I think Avram could be good! He did alot of good work at Portsmouth and they are rumoured to want him back behind the scenes.

The only problem we had with him was that the players didn't really respect him or want to play for him. His work as a Director of Football was never really in doubt.

You've got Poyet, why not add another Chelsea cast off into the mix at Three Point Lane eh? ;)

So, England managed to beat Kazhakstan pretty convincingly? I don't know what others think and this may sound dumb given our last 2 results, but I still don't feel Capello has quite got it right yet... the age-old Gerrard/Lampard being in the same side question... should Heskey really be playing considering he scores about every leap year?... the Beckham question... and who the hell was that headless chicken on E they sent on in the second half?!... a simply awful display from SW-P IMO... anyway, what are ppl thinking?... Oh, and most importantly - what about Rooney's 'convict haircut'?!

Pretty typical week in the EPL this week, Hull continue to impress. The strike by Beletti was amazing in the Chelsea match, however.

Anyone else get Fifa 09 yet? I bought it two days ago and it's great, haven't gone online yet but very good.

Belletti has become a bit of a cult hero, for a while now, his song has been the first you hear outside the stadium and then again in the waiting areas before the game. I think it all stems from his ability to score against Tottenham! His 35 yarder against them last year was voted our goal of the season at the awards and his very poor English when being interviewed endeared him even further. He's only ever had 2 bad games for us.. the first was in the Carling Cup final and the other a group game in the Champions League v Schalke .. other than that he has been brilliant in everything he has done so we appreciate it.

Yep i've got 09, i'm 54 and 1 so far online.. the only loss coming in my first ever game. Even so, i'm not a massive fan of it. The speed is so fast that games become very scrappy with players just running into each other. I prefer 08 but i'm sticking with 09 and hopefully i'll get used to it.

Great performance by Inter this weekend, 4 - 0 vs Roma in the Olimpico, some great goals there too. The team seem to have some real chemistry now and are enjoying the game, it's the best we've played under Mourinho so far.

And nahh he wasn't that great.. bit of a dirty player who took advantage of my naivety if you ask me ;)

Haha well I can see why he would be appreciated, looks like he'll be able to defend that title of best goal this year. I've liked what little I've seen of him and of course he did a very good job in Cashley's place :). We could use a winger like that on City these days, though Garrido had a pretty nice goal of his own last week against Liverpool off a free kick, still, we can't stop anyone recently it seems. Drawing at Newcastle dampens hope a bit but hopefully they'll step it up soon.

You're probably much better than I am, I probably don't find it too fast because I set the speed to slow and play mostly Be A Pro Season mode right now. I've played a few BAP online matches now and it can be fun with two good teams (holding positions down and not scrambling for the ball like headless chickens), and only one normal online match so far so not much experience online yet, though I'll be doing that more now.

Good performance from our boys in Blue this week. Belleti's strike

And did anyone see Zaki's performance against Liverpool? He might be one in the best form of almost any player in the world right now, he's just scoring goals for fun at the moment! His bicycle kick goal was just downright incredible.

Did anyone watch the matches today? I couldn't, as I was in class :( . But, from what I've read so far, attacking football took center stage! All in all, out of the 8 matches today, there were 36 goals. Yes, my math is correct. 36 goals. That's downright incredible!

Want to know what else is incredible(-ly bad)? Spurs! 2 points from, what is it now, 9 matches? Holy sh*t! Word going around is that Camoli is going to get the sack. However, Juande will walk by the end of the week. You heard it here first!

Ahh well you should of been a bit quicker! :) I think we got Belletti for something like £3 Million, apparently he was in the cinema with his brother in Spain when Barcelona rang him and told him Chelsea were interested and would he like to go.. It's amazing how simple transfers can be when you think of the Berbatov and Robinho ones being dragged out this summer for instance. What was funny was the analysis on Match of the Day, for parts of the game it was Belletti who was playing as a centre forward! When Anelka drifted out to the wings, he was the one who went up top lol.. he did a pretty good job for a right back.

I quite like BAP matches, but as you say, they can be awful when you get players who pick a defender then stay up front the whole game! What I find even worse though is when the worse player has a mad dash and picks to be the striker. Me and Jonny had a game at the weekend where this kid chose to be Eto'o up front on his own and he missed 4 of the best chances you can get! What makes it worse is they count towards your own stats this year so his poor finishing cost me also :(

Zaki's second goal was incredible, too bad Liverpool seem to be impossible to put away this year - though Chelsea will prove their toughest test yet. For the Champions League I only saw Juve against Real Madrid. Del Piero's strike in the 6th minute was perfect and very unexpected, it was a great win for them especially considering their poor form as of late.

And Spurs...haha, they certainly don't have much going for them right now.

Eh, with how the owners are going on I'd say they're going to go after Sergio Ramos and Buffon to try to make the defence better. Won't happen but the Buffon offer made me scratch my head.

I'm never fast enough to get to striker so I aim for a good midfielder and can usually get a goal or two from there. Occasionally I'll take a wing back just to try to play proper defence but kind of hard with the other defenders not really helping out.

Yeah, we don't want Beckham, AC can take him for all I care. Sure, he raised the profile of our league by a little bit. That's all he was brought over to do. Now, we have to collect a transfer fee, but we won't because our league office heads are all idiots.

In other transfer news, who do you think will be the biggest movers come January? My bet is Zaki, all the big clubs will be after him now! Maybe this shows that Middle Eastern football isn't as bad as most people say it is! If Zaki continues his run of form, woah. Look out. My bet is that he goes to Liverpool. Word has it that both United and Chelsea have made inquiries, however. Wouldn't be surprised if City made an offer as well seeing how their new owners may want a Middle Eastern player in their team, and he'd be the right man, I think. But who knows?! What do you guys think?

I don't think Chelsea or Man Utd would be after Zaki. Man Utd can't even find a place for Tevez! lol.

On another note, I can't believe Roma played like they did tonight, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in the studio layed into them pretty badly. To think they were something like 45 minutes away from being Italian Champions last year. They had 11 men behind the ball at all times and just threw themselves on the floor whenever they got the chance to waste a bit of time and take the rhythm out of things.

I can understand if Cluj did that and when the likes of Stoke go to tough away games, but this is a team who won the Italian Cup, so very nearly Serie A, and have been a regular in the latter stages of the Champions League. When you think this game was broadcast round the world, with both teams representing their Countries, it was a pretty embarassing night for Italian football really.

So we sacked our coach Bruce Rioch. And that was about time. Ok, we lost 6-3 to Villareal (crazy result) but in the national league we are at the very bottom. This guy has done nothing good for the team, and I think it's fair that he leaves now, even though his contract expires this winter.
Hopefully we'll start to get some points in the national league and get a lucky win in a home match in Champions League, so we make it to the Uefa Cup.

No shame in losing to Udinese at all! Di Natale is a quality player, he is one of the best around at playing wide in a front 3. Quagliarella was also so impressive.. his work rate was first class and he was also dangerous when going forward.

As for Ramos, he's going nowhere! It would be far too expensive to get rid of him.. plus.. who the hell would want to come in and replace him? It's not the manager as such who's getting it wrong (although the diet he has his players on and the fact he was touting for a job in England for 2 years before he got one, yet even now he can hardly speak a word of English doesn't help the players either. How can he communicate what he wants them to do?). It's the Director of Football that is the main problem, it's a Continental style of doing things but at the moment, they are doing it all wrong.

Fena, I have a question: Where do you think Zaki will be playing next season (if he keeps up his current form throughout the season)? I personally can see a few places that he could really work out well at! I say if he doesn't stay with Wigan, he should go to Aston Villa, especially if they get a UEFA cup spot this season. He'd probably be playing week-in-week-out but have a bit more quality surrounding him so it'd allow him to progress a lot more, and actually have a chance to do something big! I can't see him going to a big club (even though the papers had it this morning that Real has already made an inquiry to his club back in Egypt), except for one, Chelsea. I can see him making this move especially if FloMo, Anelka, or Drogs move on at the end of the season (or retire). He's a good 5-6 years younger than our current batch of first-choice strikers (besides DiSanto) and he could be good foil to DiSanto next season (big striker partnered with smaller, powerful striker) and things could work quite well for him. Here, let me know what you think of this forward line that we could use next season:

DiSanto - Zaki (strikers)
J. Cole (attacking mid/supporting striker)

Or if we bought him and another striker so we could play something like this

4-1-1-1-3

Cole - Terry - Carvalho - Bosingwa
Essien
Lampard (or Ballack)
J. Cole
DiSanto - Zaki - ?? (take your pick of any striker that we're usually pursuing! eg. Benzema, Huntelaarr, David Villa, etc...Maybe a winger like Hatem Ben Arfa, who would be SICK btw)

That kind of formation would be AWESOME and could work wonders. Let me know what you think and maybe even think up something like a formation that could make good use of all our players while at the same time opening up to exploit the talents of our new signings?

Feña14

G.O.A.T.
I see you've put alot of thought into this! ;)

Where do I see him ending up? Well, apparently Wigan have the first option to sign him as part of the loan deal, he says he loves it at Wigan and they are an improving team with a good chairman and coach. I believe he will probably end up at Wigan personally, if not then Liverpool.

As for Chelsea's formation next year, we need to set up to our strengths - the midfield. If Lampard, Deco, Ballack and Essien are all fit then how do they fit in the team? Mikel is pretty much nailed on to be the holding midfielder and there's no way Lampard will miss out. I think the back 4 and keeper will remain the same with Mikel, Lampard and either Ballack/Essien in midfield with Deco on the left of a front 3, Joe Cole on the right and a big front man up top like Fabiano, Benzema, Huntelaar if Drogba's injuries don't go away, if they do then Drogba will start as number 1.

It's pretty much the same idea/side that played Portsmouth on the first day of the season when everyone (except Drogba and Essien) were fit. It looks like thats the way Scolari wants to do things and I can't see him making too many new buys in the windows (a striker for sure like you say, but I don't think he'll start ahead of Drogba at first). In that game Deco didn't play like a typical winger, he drifted wherever he wanted so was basically just an extra midfielder along with Lampard and Ballack.. that allowed Joe Cole to move in and act as more of a second striker (as you suggested).

So yeah, I can't see many formation or personnel changes happening for a while. When everyone is fit (which is rare with the 2-3 games a week + Internationals) then it'll be pretty close to the first day of the season, when there are injuries then we'll see something similar to what we have now with the 2 more conventional wingers. It all comes down to the big guns in the centre of midfield.

Liverpool won't win it, no way. They don't know what it takes to win the Premier League, look at Arsenal last year. Wenger is a better domestic manager than Benitez but even he couldn't keep Arsenal going for the entire year. They were unstoppable up until that FA Cup defeat to Man Utd then it just all unravelled, that will happen to Liverpool at some point too.

Can you imagine if Liverpool were still in the race with a month to go? They don't have the players or the manager who have been there before to get results when it gets hard. If they come close this year then they can learn what it takes for next season.. but not this one.

Man Utd or Chelsea will win it, no doubts.

The thing is though mate, Arsenal couldn't keep it up because they didn't have enough depth in their squad. I personally think Liverpool have just about enough depth to keep it up but I still don't think they will win the prem just on the fact that United & Chelsea are more capable of winning the title & more likely keep up form (yes I know Chelsea lost to them but I mean Chelsea & United just have more of a pedigree).

Benitez was able to win la Liga twice, and with a team that wasn't as good as Liverpool (especially the first year) I think that previous years he didn't think he had enough depth to go for the Premier and that's why he focused in the Champions, but now I think he has the team he needed for it and he's focusing in the Premier.

If Gerrard and Torres stay healthy I'll say this Premier League goes to Liverpool

We've heard the same thing for the past 3 seasons, let's not forget Liverpool had a brilliant start last year aswell but didn't come close.

Man Utd and Chelsea are still the best two teams in the world and to win the league he is going to have to do better than both over 38 games. Will he do it? I doubt it.

Even though he supports Liverpool he and I decided that that match would be the best one to watch and by god were we right!

I'd ask Ross about what he thinks but I bet he's drank himself stupid in light of how today's events turned out for his Spurs!

And Bentley's goal was just pure class. Simply amazing strike. Same goes for Jenas's goal, just oozed with pace and power, absolutely incredible!

Hahahhahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhaha so many individual mistakes in that game by the cocky Arsenal. Tottenham celebrating like they just won the league makes it even better.

Considering the horrors of this season pre-Harry, and taking into account Arsenal's healthy lead, the fact that Spurs managed to draw against the mortal enemy is definitely something to shout about for us THFC fans...

Re which goal was greater out of Bentley and Lampard's superb strikes... hmmm... hard to say... Bentley's was pretty sensational and one should consider the background of prior to his scoring his every touch being raucously booed by hate-filled gooners. However, I have to say I thought the Lampard goal was so deft, subtle, instinctive and, yes, beautiful... despite my allegiance to Spurs I think I rate that Lampard goal just a tad higher.

Here's a quote for Hotspurs fans from Colin Farell in the movie In Bruges:
"Purgatory is kind of like the in betweeny one. You weren't really **** but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham". LOL that movie is funny. I liked it when he karate chopped the midget on his shoulders.

Bentley's goal = immense
Lampard = still a Graeme Smith lookalike with an annoying cuz in the Sky pundits team
Berbatov's turn in the build up for Ronaldo's second goal = hawt
