TTW FAQ: READ BEFORE POSTING! (Sigs, Avatars, Pictures, etc!)

Hi everyone,

Thought I would get some commonly seen questions answered where everyone (hopefully ) will see.

Q: I just signed up. Why can't I post?
A: All accounts must be approved by a moderator before they are fully activated. Accounts are moderated by Admin. New accounts are activated Monday-Friday only. Accounts created on weekends will be approved on Monday morning.

Q: Where/how do I create a sig?
A: You can find this option in your User Profile. To access your user CP, simply click on your username, located (typically) at the top right of your screen.

Once viewing your profile, you can access your Signature and Avatar options by clicking the appropriate links.

Editing your signature is very simple. You will see a text box, type what you would like to appear in your signature into the box, and hit the "Save Signature" button. You should be good to go! Please note that signatures are limited to three lines. Unlike other forums, we do not allow HTML/VB markup in the signature, this prevents pictures, links, etc from appearing.

Editing your Avatar: If you would like your own, personal avatar, follow these steps:

Find or create a picture that you would like to appear under your screen name. The guidelines for a signature are consistent with the forum policies, no offensive content, and definitely NO pornographic material.

With that said, you will very likely have to re-size this image so it will work with the forum. The max size 200x200.

Now that you have found/prepared your image, you can now put it up! Select the "Use Custom Avatar" radio button, and then click "Choose file." Locate your image, and hit the Save button. Once this is complete, click the "Save Changes" button. Your avatar should now be ready to go!

Q: I tried doing that! I can't find these options! What is going on?
A: If the options pictured above are not showing up for you, chances are you are a new user. New users will gain access to these privileges after they have reached 50 posts. If you are past 50 posts, and still not able to access these features, contact the administrator using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page. If you have very recently reached 50 posts, it may take a moment for the system to recognize the change in access rights. Another trouble shooting tip is to log out of your account, then log back on. The system typically does not pick up on the status change until after one relogin. Please be patient!

Q: I am far away from 50 posts. How do I get so many?!
A: Whatever you do, do NOT spam, or make rubbish posts to achieve a post count of 50. This is certainly frowned upon, and can result in a ban. All an avatar does is give you a small picture by your name. Just take your time, give useful input, and soon enough you will have it! Be patient

Q: How to I report a bad or offensive post/poster?
A: This is an often overlooked feature, but there is a button at the bar on top of every post on the forum that allows you to report an offensive post. Click "Report" in that bar. Please help us by giving a brief reason why this post is a "bad" one. An example of a good reason would be:

"The post contains obscene language."

Obviously "offensive" content is subjective, the moderators/administrators will review each reported post as they come and deal with each separately.

If you would like to report a bad poster, the process is the same. You can flag offending posts, and/or you could send an e-mail with a reason of concern to the administrators at the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page. The "Contact Us" link will direct you to the administrator, the "Report bad post" link will send an e-mail to all administrators/moderators of the board.

Q: I want to post pictures in my thread, I have no clue how to go about doing this, any advice?

A: Sure! Provided you know how to take pictures and get them on your PC, here is what you need to do.

  1. With your pictures on your computer, please ensure they are sized appropriately (~800x600 is a good resolution). Also ensure they are in a web-friendly format, such as .jpg, jpeg, gif, (and less common .png). RAW photo data, or BMPs are NOT encouraged, as they are uncompressed, and take up a lot more space.
  2. After resizing and compressing (into .jpg or .gif), upload your photos to some sort of host. If you do not have your own, personal web space, I suggest using free photo uploaders such as http://imageshack.us, http://imgur.com, or http://www.photobucket.com - These sites offer free hosting for your photos, as well as instructions on how to access them through other sites.
  3. When inside your thread, click the "insert picture" button using the editor.
A pop up window will appear, asking you for the "URL" of your picture. If you are using your own webhost, insert the address of your picture. If you are using a free uploading site, such as photobucket, or imageshack, insert the URL that was provided to you.
  4. If you inserted the URL correctly, the image should show up when you hit "OK."

Q: What are the policies on sharing videos, etc?

A: DO NOT post any AV piracy links. YouTube and streaming videos are fine, but do not post methodologies or other information on how to rip off other peoples property.

Q: Why is my post count "frozen?" I frequently make posts, but my post count won't go up!

A: Posts are only counted in non-"social" forums. Posts made in Odds & Ends, Rants & Raves, etc. do NOT count towards your post count. This is to discourage "spamming."

Q: Why can't I edit my posts? (OR) Why do I not have an "edit" option when posting?

A: New users are not allowed to edit posts. Once you have achieved a non-new user status (after 50 posts [takes a log out/log in to reset]) you are allowed to edit your posts. The idea behind this is to think about what you are posting, and have some accountability for your action. This also allows us to manage "bad egg" posters, especially advertisers/spam users.

Q: I've noticed when I reached "xx" the "status," or "title" under my name changed! What are all the "rankings" by post count?

A: User post count and rank info:
New User 0
Rookie 100
Semi-Pro 400
Professional 800
Hall Of Fame 1500
Legend 5000
G.O.A.T. 10000
Talk Tennis Guru 20000
Bionic Poster 30000

Q: Why was my _____ post deleted? I don't think I have violated any TW policies. Is there anyone I can contact about this?
A: TBH, it is difficult to determine why ____ post was deleted, or by who after the fact. We ask that you ask yourself the following before making a post, or attemtping to contact us:

- Was my post offensive to other users? Simple: Did you "personally attack" any other members? Even a sarcastic, off-color comment can be mis-interpreted sometimes. It is the internet, and sarcasm, etc are not easily conveyed

- Did I quote a post that is now deleted? If this is the case, we (more or less) have to remove subsequent posts quoting the original content. This is unfortunate, but is obvious as to why.

- Did I post a competitor link, or reference a competitor's website and/or name? TW reserves the right to delete/remove any posts that promote competition. This is a privately owned message board, and TW is a business.

- Did I try and get creative, and get around the language filter? This most commonly occurs with the word E-bay, but bad words and other censored words are not permitted in any form, edited, bleeped out or not.

If you still have any questions or concerns, please contact the admins directly using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom right corner of the page or through the TW Staff profile.

Q: How do I check the threads I've posted in for replies and responses or activity?
A: You may access your Profile Page at any time through the link at upper righthand corner. Click on "Your Content."

We also recommend you review your Alert Preferences, also access through your Profile Page. You may choose whether to receive alerts for a variety of activities, including when someone replies to a thread you are watching, quotes you, tags you, makes posts on your profile, etc.

Q: There's a poster who I simply can't stand. How do I ignore them?

A: Ignoring users is simple, but there are some caveats. All posts made by that user will now be invisible, but quoted posts from that user will still appear. To ignore, click the user's name --> Add user to ignore list. Or you may manage your Ignored users through your Profile Page.

Q: How come my post in the For Sale/Trade section of the forum isn't showing up?
A: The For Sale/Trade section of the forum is a filtered section. This means that any and all posts made in the FS/T section are reviewed and need to be approved before showing up on the site. This discourages competitors coming into the TW boards and selling off their stock. Unfortunately, this also causes a delay in the posts reaching the FS/T subforum! There is a sticky in the FS/T that also discusses this. The FS/T section of the site is a privilige, not a right, although this solution isn't the most elegant, there needs to be some regulations due to the nature of the business.

Q: I'm not a competitor, and my post still isn't showing up! What is going on?

A: If you are selling new, unused, or near new (this is up to the FS/T filterer to decide) your post will NOT be approved. This is to discourage the undermining of TW sales. No dealers/spam allowed. FS/T posts need to stay in the FS/T forum. FS/T posts in any other section of the website (this is mainly a problem in the Racquets sub-forum) will be deleted. This is your warning. Please check your inbox. We are now sending alerts to users when their ads are deleted with the reason it did not meet guidelines.

Q: I remember there being an older version of this board? Is there any way to access these posts?
A: At this time, there is no way to view the threads that were located on the ORIGINAL board(s). You can, however, view the archives once the board was moved over to VBB and then to Xenforo. See this thread: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=38202.

Q: How to I get in touch with TW? I have a question/concern!
A: This is quoted by the TW Staff:
You may also contact TT Admin through a direct private conversation through the message board.

Q: Does Tennis Warehouse take paypal? I don't have a credit card!
A: Yes, as of March 2006, TW takes paypal as a form of payment.

Q: I think there is something missing from this FAQ, What can I do to get it in here?
A: Simple, just leave a response in this thread with a suggestion! If there is a good reason to put it in the FAQ, it will go in the FAQ! Please note this is the General TTW FAQ, not the FAQ for a specific sub-forum. If you would like a FAQ in a specific sub-forum, and there is not one, I can also take suggestions by e-mail. Feel free to send me one through my profile

Is it possible to make a FAQ for the O&E subforum? Most of those threads are one-liners anyway so I don't think it would take long.

If you don't have the time, just email me and I could type it up and email it back to you, since I have lots of spare time lately:|

Is there a certain number of times if bad posts are reported that automatically get the thread deleted, or does it depend on the moderator who is currently logged in?

Both. If we see a thread is going downhill with no chance of returning to a regular discussion, the thread will be deleted. We do not "automatically" delete any threads.

After what post count are you allowed to send and receive private messages?
Private messaging is not enabled on TW at all for any users. This is so other resellers and competitors are not allowed to solicit/advertise privately on our boards.

As much as i like this boadr and agree with many of the regulations i think it's ridiculous Private Messaging is not allowed on the board.

Why is it rediculous there are no PM allowed? This board is owned by TW whose primary business is selling new merchandise. The educational and informational sections only add to the users experience on their site to promote and encourage more business for them. They started the message boards which obviously are a huge success and very popular in the worldwide tennis community.

If they allowed a PM function on this board, it would allow people in the same business as TW to make sales to potential TW customers.

You can always email someone and more than likely they subscribe to AIM or YIM and you can create a community if you want to IM.

Hey, Mods, please move this thread back where it belongs; or we'll lose one of the greatest forum members: Rickson.
There must be some technical problem.

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=180125

The instruction section should be about learning and improving, not childish boast-feasts. While there is some minor instruction in that thread, it is primarily filled with social miscellaneous talk. It should have been moved a long time ago. If Rickson is going to cut out just because his thread, which was posted in the wrong section to begin with, was moved then he needs to emotionally invest himself in more important things in life.

I've a question about the link from profile about instant messaging to your email address. Does this still work? Because I am usually logged into TW and my instant messaging host at the same time, but it still always shows, "not online right now" message. Thanks in advance for your reply>>Journey

Wait a second, I am still without edit avatar and I am over 50 posts and tried logging out and back in again. Any help?

How do you extract lines for a quote from some previous message. I hate to respond to long text because I end up repeating the whole thing. Thanks very much.

O.K. I just did that but it didn’t come out like this example:

All of the above, after "quote" is in grey tone. Here is how it came out:

you have to make sure that you have the tags in place, one at the beginning and one at the end to match. You can take out everything you want except [ quote ] and [ /quote ] - without the spaces. As long as you leave the tags intact, the part you are quoting will be shaded grey. :)
