WTA - Bad Gastein / Istanbul

Some more lower tier events this week. Venus is no 1 seed in Istanbul with Svitolina no 2. Some decent players in that draw actually.

Bad Gastein slightly less impressive; Errani and Stosur the top two seeds.

Interesting that Istanbul is on hard, whereas the men's equivalent was on clay. Bad Gestein is on clay.

Anna-Lena Friedsam up 6-1,4-0 against Klara Koukalova at Bad Gastein and then RETIRES???

Hope there weren't any suspicious betting movements going on in favour of Koukalova in that match?

:eek:o_O

German tennis player Anna-Lena Friedsam was carried off the court on a stretcher after spraining her ankle while leading Klara Koukalova of Czech Republic 6-1, 4-0 in the first round of the Gastein Ladies on Monday.

Tournament organizers had no immediate update on Friedsam's injury. The 21-year-old German reached a career-high 73rd on this week's WTA rankings.

Koukalova, who double-faulted nine times and failed to hold serve during the match, will next play second-seeded Samantha Stosurof Australia or Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.

In the only other first-round match completed, Danka Kovinic of Montenegro defeated eighth-seeded Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4.

No. 4 Carina Witthoeft of Germany was leading Denisa Allertovaof the Czech Republic 6-3, 5-5 when play was suspended because of rain. As conditions didn't improve after two hours, organizers rescheduled the remaining of the match for Tuesday.

The 19th-ranked Sara Errani of Italy is the top-seeded player at the clay-court event in the Austrian Alps.

I'd say that sounds pretty legit.

Wow, I had no idea this girl was so young! She looks much older. Sun damage maybe. She gave Serena a bit of trouble (at the French?). I thought she was some old journeywomen getting lucky, but maybe she's someone to watch out for. Interesting. Hope she has a quick recovery.

I really hate these clay events after Wimbledon. I just think it contibutes to the overranking of claycourters. You have players like Errani working their way into the upper seeds of all the slams when they are only really competitive at one of them. It makes a mess of things when you have several of them in the top 16 as walking byes and other serious grass and hardcourt contenders are floating dangerously.

I presume you mean she's competitive only at the French, but sheesh, it doesn't feel that way. A female Nadal she ain't. No chance of ever winning the French IMO. She had that one lucky trip to the final and that's it.

7 matches today in Gastein, 6 were in straights, the other was a 3rd set bagel. Darcy's girl Sam threw a breadstick & bagel on Koukalova.

5 matches in Instanbul, all in straights including a double bagel from Rybarikova over the hometown hero Ipek Soylu. Ula trying to have a nice tourney as well, backs up her win over JJ yesterday.

Very surprised by the dominating scoreline. Although Koukalova (should've) been knocked out to Friedsam while down 6-1 4-0 but got "lucky".
Stosur should defeat Kovinic to reach the semi's. But I guess we will see.

Sometimes I wonder what motivates Errani to play. Is it a love for the sport? A pay check? I wonder because it seems she's not particularly talented, and it does not seem realistic to think she will ever win a major.

I should think that would apply to 99% of all players on the tour!

I have no idea why this tournament is held in Istanbul.
I'm watching right now, live, Vinci vs Rybarikova, quarter finals, Friday evening, and the stands look exactly the same.
At least last week, the stands were full on Friday/Saturday/Sunday in Bucharest.

Urszula Radwanska of Poland beat the last surviving seed in the Istanbul Cup quarterfinals when she outlasted No. 8 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5) on Friday.

Radwanska next faces Roberta Vinci of Italy, who stumbled after dominating the first set against Magdalena Rybarikova. The Slovak rallied to beat Vinci 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.

In reaching the semis, Radwanska earned her best result on tour in three years. She was bothered by right shoulder and right leg injuries over the last two years. The younger sister of top-10 player Agnieszka Radwanska, Urszula was still searching for her first WTA singles title. She won the doubles here eight years ago with Agnieszka.

She took more than two hours to beat Pironkova in a match with 17 service breaks.

Lesia Tsurenko endured a similar struggle to overcome fellow Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6 (13), 7-5 for the first time in three meetings. There were 13 service breaks in the 2 1/2-hour match.

In the semifinals Tsurenko plays Kirsten Flipkens, who defeatedFrancesca Schiavone of Italy 6-2, 6-4. The Belgian proved far more decisive in winning her break points -- 67 to 20 percent for Schiavone.

This is only the second tournament this year in which Tsurenko has excelled. She came out of qualifying to reach the quarterfinals at Indian Wells in March, beating two top-10 players.

Come on, Ula!

Stosur wins 6-1 7-5. Rallied off 5 straight games from 5-2 down in the 2nd set. 2nd final of 2015, great stuff :D

Good for Sam. But why oh why does she have to keep coming from behind like that? She must be an absolute nightmare for her supporters! ;)

The ultimate Italian chokefest happening between Errani and Knapp? 19 breaks of serve so far. Eranni led 3-0 in the first set and twice on serve to take the set (not set points, just serving). Ended up losing the set
In the third set Knapp led 5-2 and yet it's at 5-5 now. Pathetic

Number 20. Knapp can now serve out the match but let's see if she can... She's already had 2 games on her serve where she could serve it out

Holy hell, this coming week is bad. No real reason for a new thread.

Baku, highest rank is #41 Pavs, Tsurenko has already withdrawn with an "injury".

Brasil, highest rank is #64 Tatjana Maria.

Yup i'm just taking a week off. It's awful, just opportunities for no names to win titles. You know your tournament isn't popular when seeded players include those ranked in the 130's

Ha, JJ is playing in the freaking $125K in China. Must be one hell of an appearance fee.

Top seed Jelena Jankovic made a confident start to her campaign at the Jiangxi Women's Tennis Open, easing past Riko Sawayanagi.

Having waited until Wednesday to see the former World No.1 in action, Jankovic did not disappoint the Chinese crowds. She set the tone on the very first point, wrong-footing Sawayanagi with a forehand winner and 68 one-sided minutes later she added the finishing touches to a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Jankovic enjoyed a solid grass court season, making the semifinals in 's-Hertogenbosch and then reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon. However, it is on hard that the Serb feels most at home and the summer months have traditionally been a fruitful period of the tennis calendar; seven years ago, a successful stretch on the cement - including a runner-up finish at the US Open - propelled her to the top of the rankings.

A good run in Nanchang could provide Jankovic, who faces World No.245 Liu Chang in the second round, with the springboard she needs in the build-up to August's US Open. Her next stop off will be the Premier event in Toronto, before finishing off her preparations for Flushing Meadows in Cincinnati.

While Jankovic was easing through, one of her title rivals, No.3 seed Wang Qiang, was exiting the tournament, slipping to a 7-6(0), 6-3 defeat at the hands of Han Xinyun. Also advancing to the quarterfinals was No.8 seed Liu Fangzhou, who needed just over an hour to brush aside Kato Miyu, 6-0, 6-2.

Those are some monster names she'll have to battle.
