The difference between the Big 3 and everybody else is mental. Thiem just checked out mentally after winning that second set. They would have got even better in this set. It's too bad Djokovic crashed in the semi because Rafa is not good today and he would have had plenty of chances.

> 73% first serves
> 0 double faults
> 26 winners - 23 unforced which are not even unforced but brutal hitting from Thiem
> 83% net points won
> Nadal throwing back everything against Thiem with more interest to boot

How is Nadal not good today? Only a few errors turned the second set, Thiem was playing good. Nadal would've grounded Novak. In 2014 Djokovic also won the first set then lost the next 3 and in the 3rd set he lost 6-2, didn't get a breadstick like Thiem did.

Djokovic would NOT be in this position in the first place. Novak does NOT have mental breaks as Thiem had.

Have you even been watching Djokovic in this tournament? He's been so unstable that guys who shouldn't even have a chance against him have broken him left and right and taken sets off him.

That last match against Thiem was the biggest meltdown I can ever remember from him.

I couldn't tell if I was watching Djokovic or Almagro.

But Thiem has beaten him 4 times on clay with that backhand. Rafa is a beast on Chatrier but a lot of Thiem's problem is mental.
It is harder to do it in best of 5 than in best of 3. RG is Nadal’s best clay event and most tailor made type of surface. I doubt very much Nadal gave his best in Barcelona. Thiem is staying in the match mentally. He just does not have the tools.

To be fair to Thiem, if he's going to lose a set then it's better doing it that way than the way he lost the first. Physically at least... Question becomes is he mentally up to the task of rebounding.

Didn't Djoko have to play 2 tough matches in a day or some such scheduling crap before Rome final ? Why are people pretending that this is a fair contest when Thiem has been playing for the 4th day in a row including 2+ hours yesterday ?
Wonder what will be done next year to take away Nadal's opponent's legs since roof won't let such schedule related robbery happen.
And there is this too . Djokovic was tired , thiem must be a little bit as well.

You know why. Don't play coy. Rafa played great in Rome and in this tournament, but he is not that good today.

Nadal is playing excellent, and so is Thiem. Thiem cranked out that second set, and Nadal just notched up that third in response. Solid champion’s tennis so far.

Sorry, Laver, Rosewall, Mac and Edberg all served and volleyed on clay on most first serves. They also chipped and charged and attacked the net constantly. Just watch the first three sets of the 1984 FO or the 1989 FO final between Edberg and Chang. Federer has sadly evolved into a baseliner and is only an occasional volleyer. He came in 60 times in 4 sets today which is unusually large for him. But I don't recall him chipping and charging once, it's sadly just not part of his game, even on grass.

For contrast: in the 1984 FO final, Lendl won 20 of 33 approaches (61%), McEnroe 89 of 144 (67%).
Always has his tricks when momentum is not with him. Sickening.

"According to the Grand Slam tournament rule book: “A player is allowed to request permission to leave the court for a reasonable time for a toilet break/change of attire break (women's events). Toilet breaks should be taken on a set break and can be used for no other purpose."

Learn the rules before writing dumb stuff.

Didn't he only lose serve once this tourney before the Tim match?

Well not as good today is what I meant, and not as good as he has been in this tournament. Nadal might have grounded Novak but Novak would have given him a lot of trouble today and pushed him.

Yes.

Have you not been watching Nadal at all?

This set he’s more attacking. But it still does change that Nadal predominantly relies on moonballing and opponents errors
I don't mean the fact that he's a defensive baseliner.

I mean the fact that you get butthurt over his style.

A moonball is a way to hit the ball very high, so high it's very uncomfortable for players to correctly coordinate and adjust to the new height, as much as speed is uncomfortable because a player doesn't have time to adjust and coordinate properly for the shot.

"crappy"? I'd say marvelous otherwise, Nadal wouldn't be 2-1 right now. A crappy moonball is something a mediocre player would do by leaving the ball before the middle of the court, with no speed, and not that high, just slow. Perhaps you're very used to tennis club players.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Nadal were to win with more winners than Thiem.

I called it over a year ago, chartreuse outfit as a tactical advantage. Total lack of surprise that nadal has actually done it. He'd be jacked on EPO as well right now, or whatever the new peptide is
Yea, I can definitely tell his Glutes are getting bigger and bigger every year.

He didn't even make Rafa serve it out. That means he will be serving second in the next set. Rafa will take this in 4.
Never Forget Thiem with his one hander and play style is just as much a threat than Djokovic. and that goes for all surfaces. Only reason Nadal does not have 12 majors off clay is due to injuries.

Maybe he should take a play from Nadal's book and go for the double break. Bathroom followed by break of serve.

He probably will tbh. Or at least he should. Lots of players do it after almost every set these days to "clear their head." Never mind the fact you took a break 30 minutes ago as well, lol.
