Roger Federer announces plans to compete at Tokyo Olympics in 2020

Federer, who won silver at London 2012 after defeat to Andy Murray in the final, has not technically fulfilled the criteria to represent his country at the Games. He has not competed for Switzerland in the Davis Cup during the current Olympic cycle, which would normally make a player ineligible for competition. However, International Tennis Federation chief David Haggerty has made clear in the past that exceptions can be made by the International Olympics Committee (IOC) and it’s unlikely anyone would stand in the way of the 20-time Grand Slam champion taking part.

It's good that he's made a decision. It gives the media some answers and the fans too. Less questions for a little while is always better. He can focus on his game instead.

In other words, rules mean nothing because in the Olympics and ITF money talks and players whose name isn't Federer walk... or run.

It's not totally arbitrary. The exceptions they can make are not endless. In Federer's case I believe it's the player's historical participation in Davis Cup and The Olympics. Since he's a medalist in both doubles and singles and has won the David Cup then he qualifies that way.

Qualification for the singles competitions is based primarily on the world rankings of June 8, 2020, with 56 players in each men's and women's (limited to four per NOC) eligible to compete. To be eligible, a player must meet certain requirements related to play on Davis Cup or Fed Cup teams. Six of the remaining eight slots are to be allocated by continent for NOCs with no other qualifiers. The final two spots are reserved, one for the host nation and one for a previous Olympic gold medalist or Grand Slam champion.

Interesting how and why they changed that wording from the 2016 qualification description?

For the singles competitions, the top 56 players in the world rankings on June 6, 2016 of the WTA and ATP tours are qualified for the Olympics. However, entry has been limited to four players from a country. This means that players who are ranked in the top 56 but represent the NOCs with four higher-ranked players already participating do not qualify, allowing players who are ranked outside of the top 56 but from countries with fewer than four players already qualified to compete. A player could only participate if he or she has made him- or herself available to be drafted to represent the player's country in Davis Cup or Fed Cup for two of the following years: 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016, with one of the years being either 2015 or 2016. Of the remaining eight slots, six of them will be determined by the ITF's Olympic Committee, taking into account ranking and spread of nations represented, while the final two slots are awarded by the IOC to players from small nations.

Off the top of my head I'd say it's like an insurance policy for a GS champion or Gold Medalist that has fallen in the rankings, been injured, or didn't qualify through DC. They want the best field possible. In essence, the Big 3/4 along with Wawrinka, Delpo, Cilic. They've all had injuries and setbacks.

But before it appeared they had ~6 slots to do just that? In effect, they had some committee decide them, which I would presume could just as easily have chosen Roger. It seems if anything they've restricted their ability to add special contestants with the change from 6 to 2.

This really make me sick. How many privileged can he be? Yes, I understand that that they can squiz him in by some "rules", but this is too much... Can he go by rules aplied to wast mayority of colleagues?

And yes, make sure to change surface to suits him, he can even recomend manufacturer.. Scheduling at his wish garanted, as usual...

He would have been bounced like a scrub long ago if the courts hadn't been slowed down even more ridiculously than in his early twenties. 'Member Berdych and Tsonga GOAT?

Not worried at all, he is doomed to be 3rd wheel, as he deserve... But he was shamefully protected more than a decade, and won tons of titles thanks to that fact... He is buddy and business partner of AO manager (how that's not corrupt and conflict of interests), he prevailed phone number of surface manufacturer to other tournament management to make ideal surface so he will play on tournament, not to mention schedule by his will (with few exceptions when they though he will win anyway, but he lost few) and other similar shadow stuff...

By the way, he is not 39 yo... ;)
38 is old enought to show how old he is... But that embarrassing for them hyperbole is in Fed fans (most of) gene code, obviously...
