Great match from Cilic to make his first major final. That was unexpected. He played the match of his life. The final should be an exciting one with new finalists.

Congrats to Marin. Fed didn't deserve the title playing like this, absolute garbage.
I was worried about him losing serve already in his first two matches of the tournament. The very slow start against Granollers wasn't for nothing in the end.

It's going to be a great final for everyone. No more Djokovic trolls and no more Fed fanboys. No more bashing in the final thread. Yessssssssss.

He is 33 years old!

Remind me how match tennis matches Sampras was winning when he was 33? Oh yeah, he had already quit.

This. Majority of all-time greats had already retired at 33. That Federer is still playing, still ranked in the top five and still reaching slam SF/F is further evidence of his greatness and adds to his legacy; it does not detract from it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron.

Not a Fedfan (tm), just a tennis fan.

Cilic was brutal from the very first point till the last one. I never seen him in a mood like this. good job Goran, good job..

This loss does not sting at all as Fed was never in the match.

Kudos to Cilic for channeling Delpo.

Awesome to see new players emerge !!

Happy for both Cilic and Nishi.

As regards Fed, hope he continues to play, champion the tour and move the game forward.

Haha the so called GOAT got thrashed by a huge server. I thought he was good at dealing with big serves ?
Goob, he's 33. The reflexes ain't what they once were.

And you prove you know nothing about tennis and don't play. It was Cilic's return of serve and constant pressure on Fed's serve games that made the difference.

Cilic brings anything close to that Monday and the crown is his.

Whether Federer and Novak are gutted or not, CBS would be gutted.

No average American is going to watch Nishi vs Cilic, though global audience would compensate for that.

congratulations to cilic.

flawless performance from him

this was reminiscent of when safin smoked sampras several years ago.

federer sloppy game, and terrible decision making. went to the net at all the wrong times - as usual.

good skills but the guy's intuition at net is not good.

this was a great opportunity for federer to add to his total, but he squanders another opportunity..expect more of the same from him in the near future...deep runs but cant close the deal.

Wow!!
What a final it would be!

When was the last time of a first time grand slam winner on their first GS final? French Open 2004 (Gaudio-Coria)???

Yeap he never really recovered from that 40-0 game in the first set Federer. But anyway GREAT game from Cilic. Very Good! We Fed fans a lot to celebrate from 2004-2010 so I guess its only fair to be disappointed now. I can only hope Federer goes out strong by winning something BIG.

Wow, did you guys see the way they threw the "retirement" trailer into the last CBS clip? As they concluded their show, they had an extended clip of all the LAST matches of all of the recently-retired players.

Are they suggesting this is Roger's last year? The result tonight was unfortunate, but it looks like this really is his last competitive year. Sure, he can hang on for many years, but he will most certainly never win another major. The young guns can just keep it together for 2-3 sets at a time nowadays. They can afford to blast away and have Federer/Djokovic defend themselves for 6 rounds. Eventually, one of them will break through. But also unfortunately their breakthrough seems to be also their last hurrah. Most of the time these breakthrough guys tend to fade away quickly.

Wonder what Berdych and Ferrer's thoughts are about this season. They look as far from winning a slam as ever, and now other guys are leapfrogging them.

Well that's a pity, I thought after Djokovic went out that Fed had an amazing chance for #6. Then again this has been a tournament for surprises.

At least it's a special final to look forward to, rather than the usual "Surprise finalist vs MASSIVE-Favourite-Top-Seed" we've had to put up with in so called "interesting finals" the last few years.

When was the last time that 2 major finalists both hadn't won a major at the time? Djokovic and Tsonga at the 2008 Australian Open.

When was the last time that 2 major finalists were both in a major final for the first time? Nadal and Puerta at the 2005 French Open.

True. But also note that the average ages of top players got much older now.
Top players now peak later and stay longer. Not just Federer.

It is not like Sampras or Agassi competing against 10+ year younger Federer,
Hewitt or Safin. Definitely not like 40+ year old Connors playing US Open
semi against 19 year younger Jim Courier.

Federer is the oldest but still overlaps majority of his career with current top
players like Nadal, Djokovic and Murray...

Great win for Cilic and well deserved final for both him and Nishikori.

Federer has done well one more time and no doubt he will have motivation to continue to fight the uphill battle with Father Time. He is not done yet and this was not the best of the current Federer.

Last year our CBS affiliate did not pick up the Final till 6:30 pm. Then dropped it at 8 pm. Go CBS, adios

Not unexpected, Cilic was a power house against Berdsh*t and I'm not all too surprised to see him being able to repeat this level of play today. Congrats to Marin!~

Of course a lot of pathetic posts in this thread, but no surprise at that... Fed did well after even reaching this stage of the tournament, so kudos to him just the same.

Wow to be honest tennis was in dire need of new blood. A new era is starting. A bit sad for Djoko who's not that old after all but Fed has really outgrown his welcome. One cannot last forever, he needs to accept and move on.

Do you see him crying about it? Federer has been losing at Slams consistently since 2010 and still continues playing because he enjoys the game and makes $70 million per year and is ranked #3 in the world. Not too shabby.

Very disappointing. This was Federer's chance to win 18. It's pretty tough to see him winning another major at this point.

The big thing I notice is that Federer seems to have lost his ability to hit solid and consistently when on the run. In the past, he would hit amazing shots when running and on the stretch. I still expect to see these shots when he's running for a ball, but, these days, he usually nets them.

He addressed this question earlier in the tournament and made it sound he is not thinking about retiring yet. He reassesses his plans at the end of every season.

Personally I think next season might be his last. But it also depends on how the competition is playing. It's clear he wants one more slam. I think he'd retire after that. Wimbledon this year and now the US Open were golden opportunities.

Much less than $70 million per year

Pusher Serverer exposed for a pathetic player he is atm. You know ATP is sucks when old, washed-up player contending for slams and number one by pushing and servebotting. His tactics out there where laughable...Trying to outhit Cilic, charging the net after loopy fhs and slices.Lol
props to Cilic for not been scared of his abilities. He is really good and balanced player. On his peak he literally has no weaknesses in his game. Hope he wins whole thing.

I agree. Fed fanboys like to call other players pusher. But the way Fed pushes with his BH is really embarrassing to see. He couldn't his a proper BH drive to save his face. LOL.

******* is old. He needs to accept it. The new guard is coming up fast now. I doubt very much Fed will be able to hang on until 2016.
