Hurkacz, though seemingly level-headed, is a bit of an enigma. I mean when he wins and gets far in a tournament he looks like such an effective player, tough to break, solid return, great defense, good netgame, almost looks like he can actually hit a forehand off a shorter ball. But when he is in one of his disappointing streaks, he is impossible to watch. The serve suddenly becomes vulnerable. Most rallies follow the predictable pattern of Hurkacz being pushed further and further back on his forehand, until he finally misses or fails to get to a ball. Extremely low energy, to the point I begin to wonder if there is a medical problem.
If I had a nickel for each time me and my doubles buddies in Poland swore off ever watching him again and most of us think he has reached his peak ranking and a win like Miami will never be repeated. But then he suddenly has a tournament where he plays like this week, out of nowhere. It boggles the mind.
