Looking at the score, are we sure she didn't tank the match? She is pretty fragile and did play more tennis than usual in the weeks prior.
I am wondering if she has a niggle but didn't want to withdraw without trying, and then realised it's not worth the risk so tanked but I feel maybe moving from Stuttgart conditions to Madrid something is up and it doesn't suit her somehow. At least she has about 10 days to do a training block now and try and turn up in Rome.

Andreeva barely hanging in there in the third set vs Townsend, had to come back from a break down at 2-4. Anybody watching? 5-5, Townsend serving.

Andeeeva takes it 7-5 final set. Close one!

Badosa losing to her countrywoman ranked 8 slots higher wasn’t on my bingo card today.
How about Woz losing to Errani at 17 slots higher?

I watched a bit and left, thinking Errani was done - no match for Woz. The highlights is actually quite amusing - watching how Errani won many points with her moonballing - and winning a point after an underhand serve.

I thought Errani was also known for her double faults - yet in this match she has a 91% first serve percentage, while Woz had 57% only.

Osaka Samsonova on serve in the third set, Samsonova serving at 4-5.

Edit: Samsonova holds, Naomi gets broken at 5-5, Samsonova serving for it. This might be over.

I think Mirra again showed star player's qualities at the end of that match! And I guess some older and wiser had told her not to scream her lungs empty after every point won and now she only let "rebell yell" at the end of the match! :D What little I understand about this sport, I think she is very much on the right track even though some may see that she was just struggling against Townsend.

Although iirc she was never much of a clay court player. I'm just happy she's back and fighting for it!
Luydmila, today's heroine!

Maybe Coco was p*ssed off because of her last tournament's lame showing and thus is now destroying Rus, (Oh, not destroying but destroyed already, double bagel for poor Rus o_O )

Anyone saw Osty’s match? How’s she looking? What’s she wearing. Come on people… not 1 post about Osty’s kit?
I did some quick TC Plus research for you. Pink skirt, pink and black top. Still a little frumpy. Keeping her weight down from last year.
Still looks like she could kick my ***.

Go Sloane! She's serving at 3-1 in the third set, currently at deuce vs Mertens.

Edit: and she holds, Mertens serving at 1-4. BTW nice rise up the rankings by Sloane, currently at 33! She's back baby! (now win this match plz)

Edit2: breaks Mertens at love in the next game, and serves it out. Sloane into the next round beating Mertens 3-6 6-3 6-1. Great turnaround!

I checked the scores earlier and was baffled she lost the first set to Martens on clay. I know she lost to her on HC recently but with her recent momentum a 2nd loss so soon and on clay wouldn't make sense so I'm glad to see SS won through and continued her winning run. It's good to see she's able to win through in 3, shows how much she wants it. Also, I'm not sure when the cut off for the Olympics is - it's on clay at RG and SS on clay is one of the best Americans. She likely doesn't have long to leapfrog Navarro at #21 in the rankings. Not sure who has what to defend but I expect Gauff, Pegula and Collins are locked in at this stage.

Despite the USO win, I think the French is actually her best Slam, and possibly clay her best surface.

She's been far more consistent at the FO than other Slams in terms of "deep runs" - second week, 4th Round or better results. Of course on actual Slam title on hard courts is huge, and she does have more hard court titles overall among her 8 titles, but she's not one of those players who plays on clay outside of the clay season, even when clay tournaments are available.

AO - SF, 4R(x2)
FO - F, QF(x2), 4R(x6)
Wimb - QF
USO - W, QF, 4R

Maybe I'm going overboard, but she does seem to often get it together, at least to a large degree, for the French.

I feel she is playing with house money now.

She really does, I think her long windup for the forehand helps her on slower surfaces. Really hope she keeps her foot on the gas like she has been lately because she's my favorite player on the women's tour bar none.

Rus doesn't seem bad enough to get beat 0 and 0. She's ranked around 50.
I guess it's possible to creep up to that ranking with lots of wins over players of equal ability, then get totally exposed when you qualify for a W1000.

I noticed that Switak described herself, Rybakina, and Sabalenka as the three best players in the world. I wonder if there will be some kind of reaction from Gauff to that in the coming weeks. She's a current slam holder (unlike Rybakina) although she has been mediocre since January.

Andreeva with a great win over Noskova.

All other results were easy wins by the seeded players.

Pavs over Saville
Garcia over Wang
Rybakina over Bronzetti
Paolini over a long name

and that's 7 wins. Her longest is 8 wins and we will love to see her beat it.

Insane that her longest win streak is only 8 wins considering she won a slam which is 7 consecutive matches. But I guess we all remember what became of Sloane after she won that US Open. Was it 7 or 8 consecutive losses for Sloane after she won the US Open?

Did she actually lose more matches in a row than she had won for her slam? Oh lord.

Part of me wants to critique Sloane for how woeful she was after her maiden slam but her run to that title was very good (Vinci, Cibulkova, Barty, Goerges, Sevastova, Venus and Keys) and she backed it up with a French Open final 9 months later.

Raducanu truly was so much worse. Still yet to notch a top 10 win, hasn’t made a single final since her slam run and hasn’t looked good.

I think Swiatek is right, even if Rybakina has the same number of Slams as Gauff and doesn't have great consistency, similar to Coco. I'd hope Gauff doesn't bother with it at all and lets it slide. Focus on improving and SHOWING Swiatek she's wrong instead of responding verbally (or more likely on social media) to a fairly benign comment.

It's easy to see from Iga's perspective why Rybakina > Gauff. Iga is 9-1 vs. Gauff and 2-4 vs. Rybakina so in her head, Rybakina is clearly the bigger challenge to her personally. That and Rybakina has won 84% of her matches this year, the second best winning percentage on the women's tour after Iga's own 85%. Gauff is at 77%. (Sabalenka is 76%.)
