Federer thinks he can win the Roland Garros

Logicerer is right that his chances aren't 0. No-one has 0 mathematical chance if they participate in the draw.

There is a chance of Djokovic, Nadal, Tsonga, Nishikori, Wawrinka all losing early

Just that chances are greater at Wimbledon, US Open and the AO.

Wether he will or not, no matter if it's unbelievably unlikely to happen or not, the fact that he truly believes that he can proves to me that he still can't be written off ant time soon. #18 is till within reach. It probably won't happen at RG, but who knows? Belief is the most important ingredient at this level.

Too many people can beat him. If he gets hot on clay he can probably beat most so it's not impossible if his draw opens up. He's better off focusing on Wimbledon and the USO.

I wouldn't bet on him even if Djokovic and Nadal lost early. There are at least 6-8 people who can beat him at the FO and it's impossible for all of them to lose before meeting him.

Feel free to argue with Federer who has had QF or better in 7 of the last 9 Majors..

other than the Djoker, who can even claim such an achievement? I think Fed likes his chances just based on that..

Roger believes he can win another FO this year. It's true that if Wawrinka has won last year, it is difficult not to agree that Federer can do it this year. I believe it depends a lot if Nadal and Djokovic play both in the other part of the draw. I can see Federer upset one of them, not both in Paris

what shall Federer say, the absolute blunt truth->
"I know I have absolutely no chance to win Roland Garros. I can't beat Novak, Rafa at French. Hell I can't even beat Stan,Gael or even Tsonga at clay. How will i win. I am not even interested in grinding it out over 5 sets at French Open. I'm only interested to see someone topple Novak. And why I'm playing. It's a slam that's why"

No, he'll say the truth but politely
"I don't think I have zero chance to lift the title at Roland Garros. I think if the draw is in my favor, if I'm playing well, I'll have my chances."
"He's(Nadal) the player to beat. Novak has never won in Paris. Could be now the favorite, but Nadal is Nadal."

He'll need a healthy brick of CHF 1,000 bills to stack Nadal, Nishikori, Djokovic, and Berankis into the same quarter of the draw.

Would you guys rather he say "I don't think I have a chance everyone is too good and I'm old" ?

He's an athlete, and his marketing team aside, dude is ultra competitive and arrogant - they have to be. You don't have success in sport without that (I'm a fan btw, not insulting him with the "arrogance" thing). All the top pros are, or should be.

That's why as much as I like Murray I lol'd when he made a comment along the lines of "Can't be Novak he's too good" - way to throw in the towel before the match even started. His results reflect the same.

There were some people complaining about the same thing (players lacking balls basically) - but when someone speaks "with some belief" they are labelled as crazy. Guess one can't win.

Of course Federer believes he can win RG. Otherwise he wouldn't be Federer. And I'm not talking about when we joke around and call him arrogant. I'm saying he's a champion that knows what it's like to win a bunch of slams, including a French title in 2009. Those types of players have undying belief in their abilities. That's the reason they win so much in the first place.

They're just wired differently than your average human being/tennis player.

It's "fans" like YOU who make quite a lot of the tennis community hope for anyone but Djokovic to win the upcoming RG.

Sorry to spell it out for you.

Can you imagine the forum and characters like djokerer if Federer could pull off the impossible and be the one to eliminate Djokovic at the FO again? I know the chances of that happening at Fed's age would be miniscule but how sweet would that be?

It doesn't have to be Federer, although it would be awesome. Anyone would do, really. :)

Ha ha. Yes, anybody will do but it would be particularly sweet if Federer could pull it off. I know on clay in best of five that would be asking for the impossible however.

Would you prefer it if Djokovic won the FO and Career slam or if Nadal won the FO and his 15th slam?

If Roger Federer really told like that, then he taking PEDs like anything. After taking PEDs, his mind in high condition (like after peeing Daru, Indians will know what I saying), he don't know what he talking :)

And to be brutally honest, it's not something where I don't think Nadal has 2-3 more slams in him (if he wins this RG) to tie or beat Federer's GS record. For all we know he might, but I just don't care all that much anymore. Obviously I'd prefer Federer kept the record, but if he doesn't so be it. That's the stage I'm at now. As you know, I don't obsess over records. I'm more worried (for lack of a better word) about when he'll retire.

At least he took advantage of it unlike Novak :)
you mean, he was lucky that Soderling did not have (another) Wawrinka day... Wawrinka is a landmine - when he has his day (once per year) - no one can touch him...
If Soderling played in the final the way he did in the quarters...
