Who will win?

Who do you think will secure the victory? Ferrer leads the h2h, but he must be gassed from playing so much in the last two weeks and playing Nadal today, from that viewpoint Berd is probably going to the fresher of the two. I am actually seeing this match live tomorrow night and put £10.00 on Ferrer so I am quite excited about this match :)

I'm going for Berdych this time. Ferrer is visibly tired, playing on consecutive days while Berdych got a day off. They recently played in Paris QF, Berdych knows what's coming and would want to have a win.

Normally I would go with Ferrer, but given how little he seems to have in the tank, I think I'm leaning towards Berdych in three.

The official-massage-girl-of-mallorca "BerdGirl" will fight like there is not tomorrow and secure year old number one for his master Kneeddulll

Does it really matter who wins?
I think stan will qualify second anyways and even if one of these gets to the semi final , Novak will send the packing in starights

My thoughts as well.

The Berdman is quite jazzed to be here and both Rafa and Ferru himself noted that he was tired after having played so much tennis in Valencia and Paris.

Berdych wears H&M clothing? Never noticed that before :?
Didn't know they even made tennis wear, let alone that professionals use it...

Berd serve was simply brilliant in this match, he lost ONLY ONE point on 1st serve  Ferrer didn't have any breakpoint and he is one of the best returner in the world.

Poor Ferrer is done for the season.

Love the signature btw.

Yeah poor Ferrer

defending champion in Valencia - lost to Youzhny in final

defending champion in Paris - lost to Djokovic in final

Lost in straight sets against Berdych and Nadal but there is still a chance for the semifinal.

:) You have more credibility than Nadal fans

I can't figure out how Ferrer can still go through. Assuming Nadal beats Berdych in straight sets and Ferrer beats Wawrinka in straight sets - Wawrinka, Ferrer and Berdych are all at 1-2 in matches won/lost but:
- Berdych is at 3-4 in sets won/lost
- Ferrer is at 2-4 in sets won/lost
- Wawrinka is at 2-5 in sets won/lost

So in this case scenario Nadal wins the group and Berdych ends up 2nd.

The BBC also reports Ferrer as still being in with a chance of making the semis. I don't think it's true. The best-case scenario for him is that he beats Wawrinka in straight sets, and Nadal beats Berdych in straight sets. As it happens, neither result is that unlikely (although Wawrinka must have a 50%+ chance of winning at least one set off Ferrer).

If that best-case scenario pans out, Ferrer, Berdych, and Wawrinka will all have one win each. However, Berdych will be 3-4 in sets, while Ferrer will be 2-4, (and Wawrinka 2-5) and so I think that Berdych will go through.

In fact, I believe that Berdych will qualify for the semis unless Wawrinka beats Ferrer. If Ferrer beat Wawrinka in three sets, then Ferrer would be 2-5 and Wawrinka 3-5, so Berdy's 3-4 would still top either of them.

You guys are right, I read somewhere that Ferrer still has a chance, but Berdych won a set against Wawrinka...

Ferrer may still have something to play for: a win over Wawrinka clinches the year-end #3 ranking, which would be his highest-ever.

If Ferrer loses against Wawrinka, then Del Potro can overhaul him by making the final.

I see Wawrinka beating Ferrer. The firepower he threw at Nadal today was brutal. Ferrer is neither the out of World defender Nadal is, nor does he have the nerve on the clutch points, and he will not be able to contain that kind of explosion on what despite what the Nadal haters claim, is still a pretty fast court. Add to that Ferrer has looked tired so far, and Wawrinka is beating Ferrer. Best I see Ferrer doing is taking a set if Wawrinka goes into major error mode and plays a good 30% worse than he did for any stretch of todays match.

Ferrer doesn't have the nerve Nadal does, but equally important is that Wawrinka is likely to play better on clutch points against Ferrer than he would against Nadal. Were Wawrinka as intimidated by Ferrer as he is by Nadal, Ferrer's chances would be higher.

I don't agree that it's a pretty fast court at all. The bounce seems to me medium-height (which is high for an indoor court) and, more importantly, pretty dead. I don't see it moving through the court much. Then again, I'm not a Nadal fan, so I suppose you'll discount that opinion! :)

Anyway, even though Wawrinka has more firepower than Ferrer, I think that, in a matchup between the two of them, Ferrer benefits from increases in court speed, and not Wawrinka. As it happens, slow courts often favor the player with more firepower off the ground, because on faster courts even someone with less firepower can hit through the court to some extent. (The Gonzalez v Murray match at Roland Garros 2009 is a great example of a player with a lot of firepower benefitting from a slow court against a player with much less firepower).

I think claims about the slowness of the court are massively exaggerated. I was in the crowd tonight, and let me tell you it was lightning quick. Some of Berdych's forehands zipped through the court as fast as anything I have ever seen. It's a lot faster than it looks on TV people. Ferrer had no chance whenever Berd decided to blast a winner, and he wasn't moving much slower than usual.
