Thiem to start super nervous, get broken in his first service game (and blow 3 BPs in Nadal's) and lose the first set 1-6.

He will manage to hold 3 games in the second set after being down a break again, and will lose the second 3-6.

After going two sets down, he will be out of gas, go away mentally but still manage to hold serve a couple of times, 2-6.

And then will deliver an emotional RU speech about how he is sorry about not putting up a fight and say there is no shame in losing to the clay GOAT. And probably also give @Meles a shout out for all the support and that he hopes to live up to the expectations some day.

You heard it here, first.

Alternatively it's going to be damp and muggy, the ball is not going to be bouncing high, Thiem will crush Rafa's weak serves and short balls and expose his poor granddad speed around the court. Fed Thiem fans will rejoice.

How will they even play if rain is predicted all of Sunday ? Match is scheduled for 3pm local time and weather prediction shows thunderstorms all through 9pm.

I believe Rafa and Fed are the only male players in the open era to have reached 11 finals at a single grand slam tournament.
Martina Navratilova is the only woman to have more (12 at Wimbledon).

Not sure whether these are all-time records.

Can Dominick use the Exact same strategy he used to beat Nadal at Italian open last year ??? Only problem with this is that Nadal was dead tired during the match last year when they played,, this time Rafa is fresh and rested.

I've been watching the weather forecast and now it's up to an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon I know it's probably too late to move it up but starting late like 3 I have a feeling they probably not going to finish tomorrow if it's goes beyond three sets

Nah, new 'champion', possibly, but not King, Rafa still King. He will have to break Nadal records to be the King. So, in about 10 years we will see if he takes it from him

That is not quite how it works. You are confusing King of Clay for Greatest of all time on clay.

Nadal was King of Clay back in 2005, when he only had one RG title to his name. He didn't break Borg's record until 2012, that was seven years later. King of Clay is the one who is reigning at that top on that surface at the current time undisputed. I do agree that even if Thiem wins this RG, Nadal remains the KOC, but if then Thiem backs it up by dominating next year, beating Nadal everywhere, then he will have taken over the throne.

Coria was KOC back in 2004
Ferrero was KOC from 2002-2003
Kuerten was KOC of clay from 2000-2001

None of them had broken Borg's records.

With Nadal at RG, I would never rule out a straightforward straight-sets victory.

However, this match feels as though it has the potential to be very interesting. The weather will add to the intrigue.

I still imagine that it will be Rafa holding the trophy at the end, but I do think Thiem will probably take a set.

A little more granular view on Thiem:
Thiem2018RG.png

Thiem 2 hours less on court and much of that was the difference between Diego dogging Nadal and Zverev deteriorating hamstring in the QFs (injured in grueling rally in 3rd game of match.) Nadal's save rate on break points on serve is just ridiculous, so a key for this match will be Thiem not allowing Nadal to hold from 0-40, 15-40 especially early in the match. Thiem has been better on break points than Nadal this RG so that may help him stop Nadal from digging out of so many holes. Nadal has excellent stats on return first serve, so it will be interesting if he can get close to those numbers against Thiem's rather phenomenal RG serving numbers.

Nadal's RG stats are much worse than last year where he won an astonishing 75% of 2nd serve points. Thiem's improved 2nd return game may get some traction in this match.

Nadal's first serve percentage is abnormally low as well; it seems likely he's having some minor physical issues on serve.

Nadal is the Emperor of Clay. King is too small a title.

A much as I'd love to see Thiem win, I think Nadal is gonna take this match personally and try to completely destroy Thiem as the pubescent upstart not ready for prime time player that Nadal believes he is. Nadal - "Seriously, you think beating me in the quarters of Madrid and Rome mean something? Roland Garros is my house, my Grand Slam, and I'm gonna teach you a real lesson you young punk. I'm going to grind you into the clay like a pigeon. You remember last year here in my house, I destroy you in 3 easy sets."

Rafa starts with 75% chances of win. If Theim gets first set it gets even at 50% each (and match thread reaches 80 pages just at the beginning of second set). If Rafa gets first set match 99% Rafa and match thread stays within 25 pages.
