Maybe Thiem just isn't capable of playing different on the court, especially when the stakes are high. That's who he is as a player.

Thiem was fine, you can't criticise him really. Other than that first serve percentage, obviously. This matchup, as it does with other players, presents insurmountable challenges for him. Nadal is brutal.

No, I think you can criticize Thiem. He constantly overhits. He withers more than rises in the big moments. He's just.....he's just dumb that's all I can say

For the 10,000,000th time: who in their right mind expected any other result? Thiem actually outperformed the predicted 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 scoreline. He was never going to win this match even had Nadal literally had a broken leg. He's mentally weak and a choker in big moments. He's the opposite of what 19 year old Sampras was, when he casually and with no nerves shot down Lendl, Mac and Agassi to win the title.

The only way to beat Nadal on RG is to rob him of time, stand in close to the baseline and take everything early. Also attack the net after serving him wide. Did Thiem do any of that? No, nor did any sane person expect him to.

Yes i already knew that in advance. Just based on mental strength the only one who could theoretically have pushed Nadal a little would have been Djokovic. He is still a little in Rafa’s head due to their history. With all the other players it was crystal clear from the beginning that they wouldn’t be able to withstand the pressure of facing Rafa in a FO final.

So for all the BS, it was Rafa with the plan. Rafa neutralised Thiem's BH beautifully, which had done a lot of damage in prior matches both CC and DTL. He played in behind Thiem quite a lot on the BH, which robbed him of time and yielded the slice BH that Rafa could feed off.

Thiem won two more games this year than he did last year! So much for my optimistic prediction!

Seriously, Nadal is a phenom/freak of nature at this event, especially at the business end. He can win this tournament for another few years(if he isn't injured.) There's absolutely nobody who is coming close to being able to beat him here. Two generations of useless youngsters who can't step up at slams if their lives depended on it. That's why these lesser tournaments mean diddly squat and I probably won't watch a lick of tennis until Wimbledon.

But congrats to Nadal. He's truly a wonder. Unbelievable athlete and an unbelievable competitor, the best ever IMO.

Even if thiem had pulled off that first set i think nadal pulls this off in 4 sets. I thought he served beautifully compared to his other matches before.
