Even if thiem had pulled off that first set i think nadal pulls this off in 4 sets. I thought he served beautifully compared to his other matches before.

And Thiem all of a sudden couldn't buy a serve in the final and was a complete error machine.

For the 10,000,000th time: who in their right mind expected any other result? Thiem actually outperformed the predicted 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 scoreline. He was never going to win this match even had Nadal literally had a broken leg. He's mentally weak and a choker in big moments. He's the opposite of what 19 year old Sampras was at the USO, when he casually and with no nerves shot down Lendl, Mac and Agassi to win the title.

The only way to beat Nadal on RG is to rob him of time, stand in close to the baseline and take everything early. Also attack the net after serving him wide. Did Thiem do any of that? No, nor did any sane person expect him to.

Well, pretty much everyone who logically looked at this match knew Thiem wasn't going to win. I predicted straights, and that is just what we got. Calling Thiem Prince of Clay is actually a backhanded compliment to him IMO.

There are a lot of frailties in Thiem's game that he needs to improve on he's even going to aspire to winning a set next year against Nadal.

His feet get tangled up way too often for me. He seems to lose his balance a lot. Strange thing is, he's quick and spritely a lot of the time. I'm not sure what causes it.

Net play is awful. Volleys look terrible. Also, when he comes forward to put the ball away and it bounces first, he misses put-aways that should be bread and butter at this level.

First serve returns - misses too many.

Attitude; his head goes away a bit when he has bad luck. That line call in the first set almost cost him his serve but for Nadal missing by an inch. Then last game of the set the miss at the net prompted three more unforced. Stop looking at your box too. Really irritates me that.

Backhand on the stretch is too soft. I don't like the loopy one he goes to on that side either.

He plays a lot of good flashy points but then follows it up with too many errors, making that earlier good play redundant.

The worst thing for him is, this was not remotely an improvement over the dynamic of last year's semi. Not one bit. Nadal played well but he also missed many more shots than he did against Del Potro, I thought. If this is Thiem's peak then it literally is a case of how many do you want Rafa before your legs go?

Last year Wimbledon final I stopped watching when Cilic started to cry. This year AO I didnt watch the final at all. Just not my kind of tennis these days. But this can change. Exactly my point. I predicted about eight games for Thiem so he roughly achieved that.
I'm simply baffled how people can attack 115 mile an hour first serves but they can't attack a Nadal 97 mile-an-hour first.
