Murray an ATG

Murray was No2 back in 2009! If he is an ATG as OP claims, why has it taken him over 7 years to go from No2 to No1?

Because it took 7 years for Fed, Nadal and Novak to finally go home from the party and leave Andy to clean up the mess.

If Murray will be No1 for the next 7 years, then surely he will be the GOAT....and Jesus will return!
Actually Jesus will reveal that he is Murray :D

Because there were better ATG's currently active. Doesn't mean Murray isn't one. It just means that he had the bad luck to peak in an era of 4 ATG

There is no set definition of an All-Time Great. So the answer is Yes and No.

I think winning a couple of slams + #1 ranking is enough to put someone in contention for ATG but Murray's consistency and titles outside of slams (Such as the Olympic golds and his many Masters titles) are enough in my opinion. We've had many threads about this and most people agreed that he needs #1 to become one. Now he has so he is one.

By this definition, there's no doubt at all that Andy's an ATG
But some people set barriers closer to 8 Slams, Career Slam and multiples weeks at no. 1 (which means only a select few belong in that category) - all entirely definition-dependent.

It's clear that he's the fourth greatest player of this century and the best player to represent our nation in many years

People are always in a hurry to fast-track somebody to sainthood; I'm reminded of a film festival that awarded Leo DiCaprio a "Lifetime Achievement Award" when he was 30, and the two miracles they concocted and attributed to Mother Theresa (somebody with an abscess and somebody with a tumor apparently prayed to her, and they got better). Murray is a very good player, but ATG seems a little ridiculous for a guy who certainly does his best work when the other guys aren't around.

Becker is an ATG, right?

He has 13 MS, as many as Murray. No 1 for 12 weeks. Why does Murray have to do a lot better?

I think Becker has 6 Slam titles to Murray's 3, but this post shows how subjective a concept like all time great is. I don't regard Becker as being one. He's not in the top few players of my lifetime.

IMO, Becker is not quite an ATG, but he does have 3 more slams, WTF and Murray. The open era ATG players are: Federer, Sampras, Nadal, Djokovic and Borg.

An arbitrary definition for sure, but I would say 5 slams is the cut of for a so called 'All Time Great'.

Becker, Edberg, Lendly, Connors, McEnroe and even the annoying Willander deserve ATG status.

I think some are confusing ATG with GOAT. I think Murray's case as ATG is a valid one. A couple of slams, now ranked #1, I can get behind that idea. Matter fact, players who can win a couple of slam and achieve what Murray achieved at the MS-1000 level are ATG in my book because they set themselves apart from the rest of the tour.
However, to be considered GOAT, he's got a lot of players ahead of him. He needs to achieve much more before he can be put into the conversation with players Federer, Sampras, Nadal, Djokovic.

signed sealed and delivered!

If there were ever any doubts he has now rubber stamped the fact he is an ATG.

Mate this is a classic case of undervaluing the ATG term....let's just wait and see how his stats look at the completion of his career....if he were to retire today, you'd have a pretty tough job arguing his case to be included in the same bracket as the likes of Federer, Sampras, Laver, Djokovic & Borg.

Nadal is missing from your list , he would be top of that list.

But those players are goats which is a level higher than all time greats such as Murray and Becker

Since OG = 3 Slams (according to *************), Sir Andrew has 9 Slams so far.

Yes, he's definitely an ATG.

Plus Mury is always clutching body parts, so for sure we know it's a fact he could have won more slams if not for injury 100% of the time, no?

IMO an ATG has archive any of the following feats:

a)Triple digit weeks at No. 1
b)Double digit slam titles
c)Slam on grass, clay and hard courts

So Murray just needs a FO.

I have always been a huge supporter of Murray's, but he lost too many times for too many years against his rivals in the slams to be considered an all time great. Incredible player though.
