Nole at number 1

How many more weeks as number 1 will Nole add by the time he’s retired?

So Djokovic is getting closer to returning to the top spot in the ATP rankings. But if he does, how many more weeks can he add to his overall tally? He is now fifth in the Open Era in time at number 1 with 223 weeks. Where will he end when all is said and done?

Current tally

Federer 310
Sampras 286
Lendl. 270
Connors 268
Djokovic. 223

Pretty high chance that Novak will get this record with most weeks as n1. He is great on all surfaces.
And he got a few years to take the record as well. Even with a couple of injury breaks, he can do it.

Yup. He will sometimes alternate the number one, but he will be the number one for the most part the next 4 years.
If Nole can do that then I have to think he ends up ahead of Fed everywhere except Wimbledon, the USO, Cincy, and Madrid. He would only need two more WTFs, one more AO, and one more FO.

Can't wait for those to happen.

If he gets it before the end of this season, I imagine he could stay there until late 2019.

Turns out sucking for the first half of 2018 wasn't totally bad. :D

That actually worked out pretty well after all. Think about how much ground he can gain from AO to RG next year with not many points to defend.

The thing is, even if Djokovic wins a CYGS, Zverev's Calendar Year Golden Masters (or most of Masters combined with the likes of Munich and Washington) is worth more points LOL.

2 years is not too long. If Fed could win a slam at 36, Djokovic can stay at number 1 till 34.
Completely different playing styles and different people altogether. You can't say "if person X did this, person Y can do the same". Look at all the people who were NOT able to keep on going at that age.

Young guys? If Nadal and Nole weren’t around there’s a good chance 37 year old Fed would be number 1
Yes but Federer is literally the best tennis player that has ever lived. You can't pretend that whatever he does, other players are able to do as well. And these young guys are getting better and better and the old guys are getting worse and worse. There'll be a time when a shift arises and because there are so many young guys right now, it'll be difficult for the old guard to keep winning slams after that shift has happened.

Then you can't say he can't either.

There's way too much concentration on "defending points"; you still have to earn points whether they're being defended or not. That's like saying that his big second half of 2018 (we'll see how big/huge it becomes) we'll make the second half of next year really tough.

About 70 sounds realistic to me.
You are too modest dear.

Its no other player that can win slams on all surfaces like Novak can do. Probably no one will be that consistent ever on all surfaces in this era of tennis. Nadal nope, Federer nope. Will take years before any new player can reach Novaks levels. Maybe on one surface its possible, but thats not enough.

Playing styles doesnt seem to matter. Being tall, being short, big servers, big defenders. They all play good for a longer time than before.
This argument has been used by Federer fans for Rafa and Novak for 10 years! And look at them now. Still winning slams. Its no indications at all that it will stop in the nearest future.

More like they wish Djokodal would stop.

He is playing great again with not many points to defend from AO-RG which means if he continues to play well through early next year, he can extend his lead in the rankings.

Focusing on this secondary record will hurt his chances for the real reward the Slam record.
Trying to win every Masters 1000 event is one of the main reasons why he is behind Federer and that easy draw vulture Nadal in the slam count.
Both are very close to retiring anyway seeing their recent forms so Nole should focus on winning as many slams as possible and not worry about winning every 1000+ event to maintain number 1 ranking.

I’m sure there will be a shift. But so far Nadal and Nole have similar aged-adjusted results compared to Federer. I think Nole and Nadal will actually win more in their 30+ years than Fed did at the same stage.

Don't group Nadal and Nole together.
Nole will do much better than that vulture.

Its not only Feds week number 1 in danger, but his slam count as well. Rafa is closer than Novak, but both of them got a chance for the slam record. As long as Rafa and Novak can return as well as they do now, they can beat the big servers that seem so be the guards for every slam these days.
Also, think about how deadly boring it would be if Cilic and Anderson type of players won the slams from now on. So they are needed on tour to make it interesting. Tournaments aint gonna speed up the courts lol. It would kill the sport.

Only player outside the usual suspects are Thiem and Sasha that has showed something on clay and hard. Not grass 5 sets. I am a sucker for next gen and I want them to win everything, Im fed up with the big 3, but i am being realistic here.

This is objectively false.

It's Federer who holds records for most Slams. Federer who has made the most GS finals semi-finals, and QFs - consecutively as well. Federer is the only player to win at least 5 GS titles at 3 GS tournaments, and have 5+ finals at all of them. Roger Federer has a couple of dozens stand alone records which show an unprecedented consistency overall like most consecutive finals won and winning 6+ titles in 7 different tournaments.

I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with Djokovic's statistics in as much detail but I am pretty sure that at 31 Federer was ahead of him in most, if not all, of such records. Federer's consistency is second to none in male tennis.

That's what I've been saying all along. Just because one player can accomplished something special at an advanced age doesn't mean anyone will and can do the same. It's like saying any player can win slams at mid-30's since Rosewall did it in the early 70s. Yet, there's only two players in the open era have won slams in at an advanced age.

Now that Federer is the oldest #1 player in the world so they think anyone can do the same. LOL
History has taught them nothing.

Maybe? Del Potro might have won two slams and be sitting pretty at the top of the rankings - or even Thiem based on his play at the FO and USO.

Fed would still be 1 at least last year at age 35/36 he would have been. Those bums have no consistency.

His consistency towards his two main rivals in his career proves something else.

Slams matters, not how many qf reached in a row or whatever.

Time will show what will happen

I feel like 40 weeks at least over the course of the remainder of 2018 and 2019. That cuts down the lead Federer has to at most 48 weeks, and 4-5 years to whittle that down, depending on his level and how many events he plays.

Gonna be tough for Zvendl if he keeps drawing Haase
So he likes to draw Robin Hood in his spare time or what? Seems like a strange thing to do.
I know Sasha is a bit immature (because to his high fantasy levels), but have to draw the line here.

(I know, too dry sense of humor)

Admittedly, maybe he could make some adjustments. Potential 2019 calendar would look like this.

Doha
AO
Sunshine Double
Monte Carlo
Rome
RG
Queens
Wimbledon
Canada
(Depending on performance in Canada/Wimbledon) Cincinnati
US Open
Shanghai
Paris
YEC

That's only 14 tournaments with only 2 potential back to back tournaments.

The odds are higher hell get most weeks at 1 than slam record tbh.

Apparently since Novak fans were too bullish in 2016, were not allowed to say it looks distinctly possible? Lol

I mean it does look like he has a good chance.

BTW my particular prediction which has been thrown in my face for years is that hell win 18 slams. Does that seem so unlikely now? Will there be an apology if he does?

Or will the people just slither away.

I'm talking about a very select group of people not most good fans including Fedeer fans.

Quite the opposite.

Fed fans have pointed out a million times that Nadal and Djokovic are 5 and 6 years younger respectively.

Now I'd have to look up who's 5 and 6 years younger than those 2, but really, Raonic, Nishikori, Dimitrov and Goffin have long proven to never get near the #1 spot and will likely be out the door before Djokovic and Nadal.

Only Murray and Nadal have been ranked above Federer at 36+

Who the hell is gonna stop Djokovic at 34?
