You don't think so? I respectfully disagree. Even these days, against a guy like Gulbis I don't see him losing a 2 set lead. He's done it before, but I get the feeling he would've won the match in 3 or 4 if he won the 2nd. Agree about the tactics though.

He's also had many matches where he blew MP's so those kind of came down to one point in a way.

With you on this. I said in the second set TB that should Fed take it, I don't see him losing from there. Against a top 10 player, he might lost after being 2 sets up, but not against a Gulbis.

But yeah, you could clearly see him unravel after the missed SP fiasco and I knew that was probably the match. He would have been confident enough to take another set if he went 2 sets up and Gulbis would have cooled off a bit too after being 2 sets down.
Fed is roughly where he was in 2010 confidence wise, coming from a bad 2013. Physically, he is another 4 years older. 2010 was when he was blowing MP routinely against everyone. He lost to Gulbis on clay in Rome that year.

By the way will Fed still have that no.4 ranking at W?

If Berdych beats Gulbis now he's likely to be #4 actually. I didn't even think about that. That's disappointing.

He could also be passed by Ferrer if he defends his final from last year or wins the tournament, but that's doubtful given there's a 99.9% chance he gets Nadal in the QF's. Or if Murray does final or better, also doubtful.

So I guess I'm cheering for Gulbis in a couple days.

Yeah I definitely would like to see Gulbis beat Berdych but I don't see it happening to be honest.

Why not? Gulbis has the better serve and backhand, Berdych has a better forehand. Movement is about the same, maybe an edge to Gulbis here. Both have huge groundies and an hit with an incredible amount of pace. Should be a good one! Hoping for Gulbis in 3 or 4.

Federer will be #4 unless Berdych wins RG. He has his championship points from 2 years ago.

I see them as two different losses. Federer was just a bit flat against Nole and still showed better typical penetration and willingness to move the ball around. In this match he was in ''predictable'' mode. Gulbis played well but Federer was one-dimensional by his own standards. Also, Federer had won many tournaments going into Wimbledon in the months prior, which is not the case this year.

I agree in general. Fed is not playing even close to what he was in 2012 and it shows in the results. Wimbledon is his best chance still, but I don't get the feeling he can win Wimbledon right now. He hasn't shown me enough.

I think Djoker can beat him even at Wimbledon. In fact, I think Djoker would be the favourite should that potential match happen (yeah I said it). I think the general feeling before their Wimbledon match in 2012 was actually that Novak was the favourite. A lot of people forget that. Most didn't think he could beat Djoker on grass or otherwise and they were still skeptical about him beating Murray although again I think the general feeling was that given Roger's history and Murray's that Roger was the slight favourite.

Murray should be better on grass and could easily beat Federer, and we all know his history with Nadal and eventually you have to think Nadal will get out of the first week at Wimbledon again. Not to mention any big servers with weapons could be trouble. Hell he lost to Stakhovsky last year, although I don't expect him to lose in the 2nd round again.

Are you sure? And what do you mean 2 years ago? I think there is something here that I'm not getting. What I see is Federer losing 180 points to drop down to 4945, and with Berdych at 4330 with a SF appearance he could get to 5040 pts. (4330 + 720 - 10) Berdych lost 1st round in 2013. That's where the 10 pts are from. That means he passes Federer doesn't it? Plus Federer will have to defend 250 pts in Halle lets not forget.

Wimbledon seedings add all the grass points from the last 12 months, and 75% of the best tournament 12 months before that. So Fed gets an extra 1500 points from his Wimbledon win in 2012.

There is a difference between tournament rankings for ATP events and Grand Slams. If Berdych wins he will be ranked four in the ATP ranking however he still will not be ranked four for Wimbledon.

OHHH OK. I forgot that Wimbledon seedings were different. They don't do it straight by the ranking sometimes. Forgive me, I'm a little hungover today so my brain is not quite working.

Well i am happy now. At least Fed has a no.4 seeding assured.

He definetely deserves to be seeded ahead of Nadal and Wawrinka

At any rate whether F is four or not is a moot point for tournament seeding purposes as he looses from seeded and unseeded players just alike.

So what will happen with Nadal? Could he be seeded like 7 or 8 or lower?

Gulbis played great; BH really damaging. Even snuck into net and did some damage. Fed blew it up 5-3 in the 2nd - should have stepped on his proverbial neck when he had the chance. Gulbis might have gone away 2 sets down.

All I can Say is disappointed FEDERER loss, nicely done by Gulbis, But i Really think That MTO was unnecessary. was watching the whole match and just when Fed was Finally finding his Rhythm and putting up some nice points. the MTO Card was Played... immediately after Gulbis became iron man

Ah well, man. You at least got to see Federer live. 11 years of keeping up with pro tennis and not a single pro tournament attended..thats me

Good lord, he would have been triple bageled. Anyone who was cheering for a Fedal final vs a Rafanole final at RG may be a fanboy but sure is not a fan of tennis...

I happen to be a Fedal fan, and yes, I would have liked to see Fed in that final, even if it most probably would have meant that he'd get a triple bagel.

Just because I am a fan of tennis, I like to see my favs get as far as can.
So I don't understand you here - I think the folks claiming they are Fed fans but at the same time hoping for him to lose before that final are the strange ones, not so much me.

Yep, I surely have some questions about that MTO as well.

Still - it's up to the opponent to keep his cool en not get rattled by it.
Fed simply couldn't hold up to today's Gulbis, who was - and I say this as a Fed fan - better on all aspects of the game. Better serving, better returning, more aggressive, you name it - and thus ended up as the deserved winner.

Well think of it like this...

Which would rather have Federer lose?
His fourth round five setter in 09 or his fourth round five setter in 14?

Same here. What stops you from attending at least 1 pro tournament, Sid?

Mostly I have trouble finding time. I had college or work to keep me busy all year and the only tournaments that are close to me are the USO and Washington DC and that is like a 3 hour drive. This year I might go to the Washington DC event.

Come on. It's all gravy for Fed from here out. Think of how many (millions) of people would have loved to be in those seats.

Gulbis should (and could) have won in straights
I know what you mean - Gulbis got the 1st break in the 1st and in the tb. Same could be said for Fed. Wins the 2nd set at 5-3 and Gulbis is signaling Dad to pull the private jet around...

Watching Fed lose live must be an unpleasant experience but how is that a waste of money? You're luckier than the Fed fans who've never had the privilege of watchin Fed play live. Get a grip.

Yeah, I get you.

I wanted to go to Halle for years (Fed playing, pretty close location, cheap tickets) but it's during the most packed 2-week period so it's tough. The only other tournament I could go to when I have time is Wimbledon but check out the prizes, especially for the 2nd week. Are you kidding me?

I think it would have been fun to see pathetic Federer get humiliated- a tasty 10-24 h2h and 2-10 in slams, not to mention 0-6 at Roland Garros against Nadal. You almost feel sorry for the poor sap- but not really. Now it's merely a question of whether it's more satisfying to have Federer lose every match for the remainder of his career, or more humiliating defeats at the hands of Nadal.

If you hate him then it would surely be most satisfying for him to become an internet troll. If that happened then he would clearly have serious issues.

^^^^ And 31-7 so far on the year. Hardly any reason to worry. He'll forget this match by noon tomorrow and be getting ready for Wimbledon later in the week. 18 can happen.
