In 2009 Roddick lost 16-14 in the 5th to 7 time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer after beating Andy Murray in the Semi-Finals.

I am/was a big ARod fan, and he also had a great record at Queen's - but I think it is difficult to argue against Nole being the better grasscourter as ultimately he has won the biggest prize in grasscourt tennis.

Even Dustin Brown is claimed to be a better grasscourt player than Djokovic by some and would likely win a poll like this over Djokovic.

Well Djokovic is the better player overall by a considerable margin. Which makes him the better grass courter, if only just, because Roddick is very good on the surface compared to others. The Wimbledon title is pretty undeniable really. Against Nadal too, who's no pushover.

Djokovic beat Nadal on grass to win the biggest grass court title in sports. Roddick doesn't have a Wimbledon title. If he had won the 2009 Wimbledon, I would have said he is better. But Djokovic's results have been statistically more impressive.

I know Novak has a W title but Rod has more grass titles overall (actually Novak only has the one) and a higher winning % on grass. Also Novak never beat Fed on grass, Rod never had the luxury of having a shot at W without Fed in his path.

Novak has to beat Murray or Federer to prove that he can play on grass, but he couldn't take a set against Murray at the Olympics and Wimby.

When he won the title in '11, he didn't face any grass court player and we all know that if he played Murray in the final, he would've lost. So he just got lucky not facing Federer and Murray in that year, because he can't beat them on grass.

Roddick on the other hand almost beat Federer in 09 and actually beat Murray in that year.

novak might be weaker on grass in terms of his overall surface performance but is way better than Roddick. I liked A Rod, admired his passion and felt for him particularly in 2009 when we was so close but the comparisons are silly and trite. Novak will be a borderline all time great when he's finished playing. A Rod won one slam and while the great Federer was in gis way most of the time otherwise it's more a tribute to the fact that the competition was weak that he even got that far.

If it weren't for the Wimbledon title, Roddick would win hands down. He has 5 grass titles in all and 3 Wimbledon finals. Without the Wimbledon title, Djokovic would have no grass titles and only 3 finals.

But you can't argue against winning the top tournament on the surface!

According to your analogy, Roddick= 3 Wimbledon finals, novak= 2 finals, and Roddick has a better record on Wimbledon overall so Roddick>>novak.

Why is Nadal being disregarded in this discussion? Nadal is the 2nd best grass courter in recent times after Fed. He plays grasscourt tennis just as much as Murray, he's got the shotmaking, slice, volleys, etc.

Djokovic beating Nadal at Wimbledon is the next best thing to beating Federer. Even if he hasn't beaten Murray, it doesn't matter since Nadal is easily a better grasscourter than Murray.

You should check your facts first. The grass on Wimbledon was changed in 2002 and has been the same since. So Roddick and "the grass GOAT" were playing on the same "green clay" as Djokovic and Murray.

Djokovic couldn't even take out past his prime Federer at Wimbledon.

Roddick played Federer close at Federer's peak and almost beat Federer in 2009.

In my opinion, Djokovic was lucky he had a tentative Nadal at Wimbledon in 2011, although Djokovic certainly deserved that win.
