So Nadal is looking good at the moment and Muzz is looking bad. I know it's just an exho but I'm going to follow TT tradition and overreact based on 2 days of tennis. Djokovic had a rough patch but he looked out of it mostly mentally, so expect him to come back recharged at the AO. Besides, AO is his favorite slam and he always does well there.
Add to this the fact that the lost generation, albeit a bit improved, is still looking like they couldn't win a slam to save their lives. This makes it look like it could really come down to Nadal and Djokovic battling it out like the good ol' days.

This seemingly continuing dominance of Nadalovic and the long wait for the new generation to dominate can be seen as an unfortunate surprise for Federer fans, as they had thought the 17 GS-record was quite safe.

This begs the question: Who of them do you want to win the next slam the most? In other words: Who are you least afraid of? Would you let Nadal win a final slam, as you're pretty confident he won't ever win one again anyway? But know that it would give him the double CGS. Or would you pick Djokovic, as he's further away from 17? But know that he's likely to go on a hot streak again and a few multislam seasons is enough to give him the GS record.

PS: Obviously other fans can answer as well. But mainly I wanted this question to be answered from the perspective of someone that wants to keep Fed's record safe.

Being a Federer fan Id certainly pick Djokovic, as Nadal winning would mean he's in prime form to win RG and get to 16. Plus, Nadal winning has more upside and unexpectedness than Djokovic winning. Federer also has the edge overall against Nadal when it comes to consistency and aging, but a Nadal win would shatter this.

Djokovic would still be far behind and it's his best chance to win number 13 in 2017 as AO is his best slam anyways.

Fed's record is safe no matter who wins, IMO, but given a choice between Nadal and Djokovic now, definitely Nadal. I don't care about Federer being "the best" anymore, even though it's nice. I just want him back healthy and playing. A Nadal win at this point in his career would be more interesting than a Djokovic win as well.

That said, if Djokovic keeps sliding a GS win gets more interesting by the tournament. There's something about never wanting to see a champion fade that makes you root for them eventually. Djokovic is not quite there yet, but Nadal is.

I like Nadal so I'd have no issue with him winning anyway.

But even if I just put my Fed fan cap on, I would go with Nadal too as he would have much less chance of adding more.
The best possible thing that could happen for Fed's legacy in the next year or two (outside of Roger himself winning more) would be for Djokovic to not win more slams.
If Djokovic wins minimal slams over the next couple of years, Federer's record and status is pretty much guaranteed for quite some time.

Not that I'd begrudge Djokovic further slam victories - I'm over that lame kind of thinking - but just from a purely pro-Fed point of view, Djokovic winning more would be best avoided.

Nadal out of those two. But at this point, Murray stopping Djokovic from winning any more slams, whilst Fed nabbing 1 or 2 would be perfect.

I wouldn't begrudge a 35 year old Djokovic winning a 7th AO and 13th GS overall to become undisputed AO GOAT and joining the 7 club :D

Trying to put a Fed Fan hat on and play this hypothetical. That's a darned good question. It's unlikely that Nadal will catch Fed's 17, but if he did win AO17 he'd be at 15 going into the FO and that would scare me if I were a Fed Fan who highly values the GS Total stat. 17-14 seems a whole lot more significant than 17-16. But then again, Nole is a real threat (though I don't think he'll do it) to reach or surpass 17.

I'm a Nadal fan so I want him to win obviously. I'd be more happy for Nole to win AO17 than Fed (even though I like Fed better) just because I want the GS total to stay close between Rafa and Roger. I expect Nole to likely win it but who knows after the way he ended his season.

The poll should have be an option for "neither". I choose this option because these two players have won a total of 26 slams combined. That's a lot is slams!

If they happened to reach the final then I want Nadal to win.

I wanted people to have to chose between the two. That makes the question more interesting imo.

Hit the nail on its head right there. You don't want to see Nadal doing well while going into his favorite slam. Nadal at 15 is scary on its own, let alone having him play RG as the next slam while in amazing form. To be honest, I feel like there is a cap on this prolonged Big 4 domination that we are seeing. This is already insane, to have 3-4 guys run the game for about 10 years. It will end soon. So the safest thing to do is play the number's game and say that Novak should win the next slam. Even if he wins slams this year and the next, it will have to end after that. So he might get close but he won't reach 17. Nadal on the other hand is much too close for comfort if he wins this slam.

Nadal is Peak Fed's contemporary. Djokovic is old Fed's contemporary.

It would be epic to see Nadal win this AO and it would be a great twist if he follows it with the FO.

Djokovic has feasted on a weak era for about 3 years now and I would like Rafa to get some as well as he never won in a weak era.

Nadal's legacy is set even without any more majors , so I think it may add to Fed's resume if Rafa gets closer to 17.

That's true. And it would be quite a surprise if Djoker won the AO. Nadal has about as much chance as Fed, but Fed has an excuse: he's ancient, he's had surgery and he's been idle 7 months. We Fed fans can pray for a miracle! #18!

Love both Djok and Fed. (Admittedly Djokovic more- don't castrate me over my icon)

Putting some semblance of objectivity on here, however-

Nadal has 14 slams. Djokovic 12. Put one more on each. 15 and 13.
For Nadal to reach 17, he would need just 2 more at that point, which is entirely possible. If he can win a hard court slam, winning a slam on his favorite surface should be child's play, and could make him into another monster who dominates the year. 17 would be entirely plausible to reach.
Djokovic at 13 slams right before turning 30, at the late peak of his career? I'd put it past him, generally, to get 17. Admittedly, it would be just 1 CYGS away, or 2 multi-slam years, but given the level of play Murray has shown, and the possibly of a Nadal resurgence, that won't be easy.

So Djokovic should win if we're trying to keep Fed the GOAT. Especially since another AO means Rafa has the Double CGS.

A couple of years ago, Djokovic would be the choice to go with if I put my RF hat on. However, in 2017 Nadal is long past his peak and Djokovic has been collecting Slam titles like Mario collects coins. In 2017, Nadal is the obvious choice unless some Fed fans still hate him, which is also understandable. Even if Nadal wins another Slam, he is a big question mark in the next Slams. Djokovic on the other hand would actually go on to threaten Federer's records. So, Nadal. Because he is also a beautiful soul like Roger who is more beautiful.

Hmm, I'm guessing they don't want either guy to win. But if by some miracle there was another Nadalovic final this year, the vast majority would most certainly choose Nadal. Fed fans love Rafa these days! :)

Nadal hasn't looked good in years. No idea why anyone would think he's relevant at the AO.

Federer has a much better chance at the AO than either of the other two.

LOL no way. Djokovic is the favorite for the AO, it's his slam. I personally give Nadal a much better chance at this slam than Fed, but I know people think otherwise. This surface is just not for Fed

Are those poll results some kind of a joke?

Can't believe I can't find that thread but I remember there was a similar question with several choices who would Fed fans want to win 2016 RG. Djokovic barely got any votes. Nadal winning his 10th would be a good change, that useless Slam final pigeon winning his first would be a great Clayray story, while Djokovic winning his first would be monotonous.

What changed in six months lads? This poll should be a blowout in Nadal's favor.

Djokovic bouncing back from a recent slump would be great but Nadal going all the way after not winning a Slam for over 2 years would be even greater.

Murray finally winning would probably be the best outcome for a neutral. Federer's record is safe for now, I think we will have to wait for someone from the new generations to win 18.

The answer is really very clear. What is common between Djokovic winning RG and Nadal winning AO? The winner getting one more CGS set, which is largely considered to be a strong legacy boost.

Of the 2, I prefer Nadal as a player, so I would love to see him win. The AO has always been his unluckiest slam and a Nadal win would do wonders for his confidence and help re-establish himself as a threat on hard courts. With that being said, a Djokovic victory is something I could definitely enjoy as well. I may dislike him as a player, but I have a ton of respect for what he's accomplished. His tennis really took a steep fall after the FO last year so I would hate for him to finish his career like that. I'd much rather see him rise again and there's no better place for him to do that than at his home turf at the AO.

Djokovic. I missed him for the latter half of the season, although I´m not a fan.

Fed/ Nads reaching QFs would be nothing short of miraculous.

It's not a threat to Federer because he completed the set and it's not so crucial (especially the double, triple and so on) considering a good part of all time greatest players never completed the set.

I feel differently on this. CGS shows all-around proficiency, which multiple instances strengthen. Federer's rivals getting DCGS would deal a huge blow to Fed's claim to being the best all-around player since Laver, which I value a lot.
All GOAT candidates have done the set, by the way, except for Gonzales, who has other awesome stats with #1 and World Tours (technically Rosewall too, but he did win Wembley as a pro).

I don't think the results are especially telling in regards to the question. Perhaps they're somewhat telling in regards to the affiliations of current active posters (especially new ones).

Not sure about that. He has the same no of slams as Rafa with one less final and multiple semis.
And the chances of either one going past quarters is poor. So not much difference in chances i'd say.
But yeah, i'd bet on Nole.

Not really, since most Fed fans will simply claim(as they usually do) that Roger would've also achieved it had peak Nadal not been standing in his way so frequently at the French so it's really a win-win situation for them whatever happens. :)

I don't believe you. You'd love nothing more than for Murray to widen the gap at the top of rankings for fear that Djokovic should ever have the temerity to get that bit closer to Saint Roger's record one day. Deep down you know it, I know it, everyone knows it. ;)

I do think Federer's best RG level beats Djokovic's best USO level, but that would be rendered meaningless if stats didn't give it some support.
Both Federer and Djokovic would've won like 4 RGs if not for Rafael constantly trolling them.
