The funny thing is that their matches are quite competitive on the slicker surfaces. Does Federer prefer slower courts even though he can't beat Nadal and Djokovic on them regularly?

In the 2015 semi, Federer was serving like a godly bot - not the case today, he's serving well but not peaking. A slighlty better ground game doesn't make up for it in overall level. Tiebreakerer is another story.

Fed decidedly average today, but I feel like that could be good if he gets through this in 3. He's peaked for SFs before and lost the final. I also think he's feeling the pressure of being the favourite for the first time. He didn't have time to process it while he was playing Raonic, but now all the other Big 4 are gone I think he's feeling it a bit.

Do you happen to also remember the brunette girl in Fed's box, wearing white pants at one of the US Open's? She looked to be in her early 20s or late teens back then. This was at the 2010/2011 US Open I believe.
