Djokovic's party piece, playing the ball before it gets over the net. How many matches has he won doing that?

This is just the Perfect example that the #1 Doubles player Nico Mahut can't carry the Weakest link Roger-Vasseline against 2 very solid players in doubles. Mahut would blown these two guys away if he had his Normal partner. Djokovic now thinks he is a great doubles player ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,WRONG...

Serbia should've won this in straights. Still, clutch AF in the end

Vasseline is a great doubles player, no.15 in the world atm. OTOH, Troicki is not exactly at the peak of his career.

Serbia won the doubles? Awesome news to hear right on the doorstep.

Since it's already 7th of January there, Merry Christmas to Novak and the rest of the guys. May they bring more such moments at this ATP Cup. :)

What really happened?

A lot of the Serbian fans thought the match was over (didn't know the difference between a normal tiebreaker and a match tiebreaker).

As for calling things out between serves, they'd been doing that for a large part of the match. The Paire v Lajovic match was even worse. The Tsitsipas v Zverev match was worse again.

Let's hope that Shapo doesn't face Struff vs Germany. He always loses to him.
I believe the matchups are not subjective... 2nd ranked player plays 2nd ranked player, and 1st ranked player plays 1st ranked player.

FAA is scheduled to play Struff. Shapo is scheduled to play Zverev.

so you are saying Novak is a great doubles player ?? LOL. he can't volley.. Mahut and Vasseline were being very nice to Novak and didn't hit rocket shots right at him to pick on him because Novak is #1 singles player in the world and they didn't want to make him mad and have his wrath against them in the locker room. Doubles guys are 2nd class players on the ATP tour and they can't afford to have top singles guy mad at them.

He isn't the greatest volleyer but would win slams in doubles if he wanted to focus on that, same as majority of top singles players could. I don't think he said he's a great doubles player though, did he? And he's actually #2 singles player atm and I think your theory of French team going easy on him is silly. They all played their hearts out imo.

Is there something wrong with you? Of course Djokovic isn't a great doubles player, but it isn't the case that the better tennis player always wins (these are called upsets). Plus, it's not like Djokovic has the power to do anything to tennis players, especially doubles players.

If Djokovic had the ability to make a doubles player bend to his whim, he'd never lose a doubles match. But he does, frequently.

Moreover, it's insulting to imply the French team wouldn't play to the best of their ability when they play for their country.

I just meant Mahut with his big time backhand and Vasseline with his big forehand, they weren't gunning for Novak right at his body. Normally you need to do that with guy with slowest hands at net and bit of clumsy netplay footwork like Novak has.

Why could he not play like this during WTF o_O
severe exhaustion or even some minor ailment, anyway he was totally battered after his Washington-Canada-Cincy-USO-Shanghai run, withdrew from Vienna and the DC, lost R1 at Bercy, and collapsed against Nadal at the WTF.

too much to process for dumb TTW, so it was converted into a 2-bit version ("unbelievable choke -> Medvedev overrated").

^ it is ;)

The actual rules are that the team is
  1. The two (2) highest ranked singles players; then
  2. The highest ATP Ranking (Singles or Doubles) of the next three (3) players.
doesn't explain Skupski's absence then, no?

other absentees include: Tsonga, Pospisil, Sock, Edmund, Zeballos, Granoller, Krainovic, Herbert.
and if we take into account the best possible reserve players, then also some out of: Rublev, Raonic, Opelka/Tiafoe/Querrey, Kecmanovic, L.Mayer, Kohlschreiber.

a few of them may possibly be injured, but as for the others: whether they declined or were not eligible, it doesn't speak for this tournament.

After beating Kevin Anderson (ranked in the 90s), Djokovic carried on like he'd just won Wimbledon.
Despite the narrative many on here are trying to tell, playing for their county is important to these guys.
we've already discussed lengthily how easy it is to display emotions at team events (see Laver cup).
there are also bigger ranking points on offer and it's a serious prep match for the AO after all.

in this article he gives his opinion on the ATP cup.

...the "national team event" issue here is actually too blatant to even discuss it, but the format itself also has another practical foundation:
as i mentioned earlier, starting the season with a(1) bigger tournament (that offers bigger ranking points) might be a good idea...
the KO format is however not optimal for it as top players may be rusty and exit early if it's just one big event (higher level).
with RR, fans can buy tickets for 3 matches of the top players, while at the same time these players are guarantied 3 prep matches for the AO.
the problem is that it's impossible to accomodate many players in an individual RR tournament.
you need to arrange them in teams, and national teams are likely to sell even in a situation when the DC was just 6 weeks prior.

from another thread, but i'd like to quote it here:
I’m enjoying the atmosphere so far. It does make sense to have a tournament like this at the start of the season, you know, like a huge training camp where players get the feel and build some momentum.

I see. If that's all you meant by that, I apologize for sounding hostile. It seemed like you were implying some unsavory things about both Djokovic and the French doubles team.

What?

At 7-3 in the final set TB, Mahut had a fault and serbian fans started cheering. Djokovic told them to stay quiet. Can you expect this from Federer or anyone?
I just don’t understand his moods. At the decisive WTF match against Federer he seemed to be disinterested and lethargic. At Wimbledon, when he had all the right in the world, he almost didn’t celebrate at all.

And then, in a rather meaningless doubles match he is aggressive as hell, slaps his chest like a gorilla, asks for applause over and over again and finally screems like a maniac.

I’m not sure if he himself understands when and why he does this.

As a player I respect him very much and sometimes even root for him, don’t get me wrong.

Watching Rafa Cuevas replay.
Good match from Rafa! Great serving and FHDTL!! Looking good!
Less than 2 weeks before AO starts!
As expected. Nadal always needs 1 match to get his form right and get acclimated to the conditions and the surface. Are you watch this on Tennis TV or EuroSport? I don't know if Tennis Channel is showing ATP Cup live.

Monfils is now 0-16 against Djokovic. In all these years, never could do anything to improve his game at all and be competitive against the top players. Just happily making his couple cool million per year and enjoying a good life but no hunger or desire to compete for the big prizes. Too bad really. So much talent on the court but no focus or mental strength. No fire.

It’s on Tennis TV! Very convenient as they have replays. It’s atp channel so they better show it!!

Davis was on Eurosport and so are all the other ITF events, slams.

Basically if having Tennis TV and Eurosport I can watch all matches on tour from 250 and up! Also Eurosport is not just one channel, it shows several matches at the same time and can chose which match to watch. Eurosport is a part of my internet package and not paying much extra, really good deal!

Also no commercials at all watching tennis from these two providers!!

I don't agree with any of FAA's choices. He really plays stupid tennis. I wish he'd play more like Murray or Wilander -- just never take any risks. He's fast enough to win a lot of points that way.

Never taking risks isn’t the way to win in modern tennis. The top players all know how to transition from defense to offense and play great offense too. FAA has to do both.

He certainly has a ways to go, though.

We noticed that they really failed to capitalise on that too. Neither of them played anywhere near their best, but that alone probably cost them the match.
