This isn't politics, Venus Williams had wrist surgery back in 2006 and she never mentioned it, until her mother stated it in an interview sometime last year. Either way, Maria Sharapova's comeback will be a great stimulus for the WTA tour, whenever she does come back healthy.

I'm in two minds on this: I think it is great that she put the rehab before the tournament, that is the way it should be. However, it means that there is one less "good" player around.
Thinking of it, it may mean that I'll be able to watch some more AO matches with the sound turned up.

Well, that is an even more important withdrawal than Davydenko on the men's side.
When Masha is on there are very few players on the WTA tour who can beat her. But the recurrent injuries she is struggling are really hurting her carreer.

The WTA can never get all its stars together, and that is what is destroying the WTA and making it the sad mess it has become of late. The best it was was mid 2003 when the Williams were at their peak, Henin and Clijsters were starting to enter their primes and seriously challenge the Williams, Capriati and Mauresmo were still very strong and threats, Davenport was also still a big threat. Since then the talented Sharapova has joined the fray, but the majority of them alternate being hurt and injured or slumping or bored, including Maria herself. By 2004 Henin is out much of the year with illness, Clijsters almost the whole year with injury, the Williams are not back up to snuff yet. By 2005 Capriati is gone for good, Henin not back up to her former form except on clay, Williams even more out of it. Now we have the Williams coming back to their best form in many years, but Henin is now retired at only 25, Clijsters having retired a couple years ago at 23, Mauresmo is close to retiring probably, Davenport is done, and Maria is hurting.

Yes, an acute injury is one thing. But a chronic injury, one that is so important to her style of game, is another to overcome. I really wonder if she will be able to overcome this. Maybe short spurts here and there, but I fear this is the injury that will hamper her career, and possibly end it too short.

Ahh...good. I was wondering if I needed to bring earplugs to my matches at Rod Laver Arena. Now I guess that's one less thing to worry about.
I think her serve is the real culprit.
