Wait a second....according to certain TW members, Vika is no threat to Serena, and the default position is that Serena wins everything?

I've said this about Vika time after time--she has the game to trouble / defeat Serena. She is the leader of the next generation and unlike so many other players is remarkably adaptable in changing whatever is necessary to win, but her own view of the game is focused. Its no wonder Sharapova cannot stand her.

She does have the game and always has. Problem is she goes on walkabouts after decent runs.

  1. Serena - would normally win but the week will be too emotional with Venus rejoining her and memories of her own return last year
  2. Kerber - absolutely no chance in hell. Stinking it up and is now in career party mode after AO.
  3. Radwanska - Possible semi-finalist. Good draw.
  4. Muguruza - Absolutely no chance. Bad Draw.
  5. Halep - Will lose most likely third round
  6. Suarez Navarro - No idea but interested to see how she goes.
  7. Bencic - QF where she will lose to Azarenka
  8. Kvitova - Absolutely no chance
  9. Vinci - First round exit
  10. Azarenka - Winner

With a few exceptions I was pretty happy with my tips.

Serena's mind was all over the place today. She was able to play like this last year and win 3 out of 4 slams but she won't be able to get away with it for much longer.

I'm not too surprised although I didn't get to watch it. I thought it was 50/50 at best. My feeling on Serena since USO is she seems to be slower at powering up her game these days. Somehow it is more difficult for her to get that super engine fully "up and running" now. So she is vulnerable in lots of spots.

The others seem to sense it.

I would give Serena a slam this year, two seems doubtful tho possible, three probably not.

It was almost at the last minute Serena says to herself, "No way I'm gonna lose to this mug", then raises her game 4... yes, 4 levels. Azerenka doesn't get those 2 big first serves in, in that last game, she gets steamrolled.

Nice photo bomb Serena!

I like Azarenka, but get rid of the goofy looking shorts...

Agree totally. The roller derby shorts have to go! And I'm not saying this in a shaming context - I think Azarenka back around 2009 - 2010 had some of the best on-court gear on WTA.

Well, it's probably all muscle, but Vika looks to have a bit of a tummy. Those shorts pulled up to her navel... not flattering at all.

But, I guess she's interested in her own comfort, and not on being aesthetically pleasing to her male/female viewers. :(

I know we cannot expect Serena to win everything, but I'll be damned if I say I'm not disappointed when she doesn't. Her performance yesterday was just ****-poor. She wasn't interested in keeping the ball in play. She was trying to hit winners off everything. Also, she converted something like 1 out of 12 break points (give or take, I don't have the exact stats). I mean, what the ****! Every time she got broken in that match, it wasn't due to Azarenka forcing the play, it was due to Serena being ridiculous. She needs to get her act together. If she doesn't want to play anymore, then fine; she should step away from the game, and let the free-for-all-anyone-it's-anyone's-to-win that the WTA will be when she retires begin.

I'm not going to follow Miami, but I hope she doesn't win it. Maybe not winning that will be the kick-up-the-backside she needs to force her in either direction: retirement or winning again.

Given Serena took exception to the tournament director's comments - women a side show to the men - she didn't really prove him wrong with (I've only watched the 'highlights') an error strewn performance. When she misses, she really misses.
seemed as if Azarenka just about kept her nerve and that's all that was needed.

Do you agree with him? Broadly speaking - I mean - that the women's game is second-fiddle. I don't know to be honest. Personally, I follow the women's game as much as I follow the men's. That is to say, if my favourites are playing, I will be watching. Even during the Fed Cup; if Serena is playing, I'm watching. However, objectively speaking, there is a case to be made that the women's game does take a backseat compared to the men's. But I don't think that is the fault of the women's game. I think it' the fault of the powers- that-be. Women's sport - in general - is not as well promoted as men's, probably due to latent sexism.

I guess thinking as I do makes me a beta-male, huh? Lol. Nobody tell the MRAs.

Don't get me wrong, I like BJK and I respect everything she did for women's tennis, but it seems to me like, for the past few decades, this has been steadily moving towards a strange mixture of equality and inequality. Wanting equal pay but being content with playing only 3 sets at the Slams (with two days in between them) seems like an inconsistent position to hold. It's like on the one side they want to be respected and on the other they want to maintain the privilege of difference (the fair sex, etc). The effort of playing 5 sets, whether you're a man or a woman, is always proportional. And I think it would be a good policy on the women's side to push for that if they don't want to be characterized as second-rate players relative to the men. As of now, they're embracing this view without even noticing.

If I have the choice of watching men or women, I'll invariably choose the former nine times out of ten. The women's game for the last few years is so inconsistent that it's easy to become detached as it's hard to invest in any particular player. And personally, as I can't abide the way SW, Sharapova or Azarenka play/noise then the pickings are slim.
Do I agree with Moore? No, he was excessive but would I buy a ticket to specifically watch the current WTA? Nope.

Fair enough. I wouldn't buy a ticket to either of them to be honest - I don't care who is playing. I prefer watching matches on TV.

But Serena Williams tends to sell more tickets in the US than Djokovic does. And yes Williams didn't play her best vs Azarenka in the final but it was a much better quality final and value for the money than that pitiful Djokovic-Raonic final.
