i realize fed hasn't beaten novak since 2015 but i forget that there was a good chunk of time they just didnt meet either because fed was away from injury or vice versa. i really kept wishing they would meet in 2017 cuz i think fed could have turned some of that around
Djokovic several times lost in the round prior to meeting Federer (Chung in AO2018, Berdych in Wimbledon2017). Based on their respective form, Federer would've had a good chance to win those.

One of the rare matches where something was on the line for each of Big 3.Their interconnected paths are what is so special about this trivalry.Roger was flying tonight he was unstoppable. Now I wish for Rafa to go to SF and have a showdown with Fed.
Fun fact:2019 H2H
Fed/Nole 1-1
Nole/Rafa 1-1
Fed/Rafa 1-1

5% is way too small, make it 25% to be more realistic. Someone like Ryan Harrison has a 5% chance of beating Djokovic, Fed is considerably more accomplished, to put it mildly.

Federer has been serving excruciatingly badly here this week. His first serve speed is oftentimes 110 MPH, which is a sitting duck for anyone, especially Djokovic. Annacone was puzzled why the serve has been so slow and predictable this event.

Nice call, amigo! I'm really glad that you were right and I was wrong!

Deserved win for Roger who was on superb form tonight. But Novak looked a little subdued and was holding his elbow a lot. Maybe the old problem has flared up again?
His serve didn't look as potent in his last two matches as it usually is but whether or not that was down to any injury issues, who knows? At least he has the entire off season now to recuperate and get ready for 2020.

No it was a terrible atmosphere. The only good thing about it was Djokovic shutting them down. USO 2015 was even worse.

The tennis is great but the crowds are not.
Well, maybe calling it 'atmosphere' is wrong. I'm specifically talking about what happens on the court. The mindset players have, their intensity and extreme desire not to lose to each other. This rivalry is always a hard battle both competitively and mentally (what goes beyond competitive mentality, a more personal level). I don't get that with other Big 3 matchups.
The crowds can be awful for Novak, unfortunately, not arguing that.

What the two display on the court is amazing. It's just too bad the crowd cannot appreciate both great competitors and be respectful.

Serves can absolutely get better with age and experience. I have no doubt Fed is capable, on any given day, of serving as well at 38 than he ever has.
Shot selection and strategy can also improve. A step slower? Yes, but it doesn't matter much when your GOAT serving.

In boxing, the last thing to go for an ageing boxer is his punch. I'd imagine the last thing to go on a tennis player is his serve?

Who would have thought Djokovic would be out of the tournament just 3 days after crushing Berrettini and looking in superb form to take the title and Y/E #1? Not me.

This is the first WTF he has participated in since 2011 (didn't play 2017) that he has failed to qualify from the Round Robin group.
