Was Thiem tired? Maybe Dimitrov has a higher peak level at the AO than Thiem and that's it.
I have no explanation for what I saw after 4-4 in the second set. Until then, it was a close match and Dimitrov did a good job of forcing errors by hitting many BH slices and not giving Thiem pace or rhythm. But, it was clear that Thiem tanked the last eight games of the match as he stopped running, recovering after shots etc. and just bashed the ball wildly to make an error within five shots on most points. Maybe, he will have a reason for why he stopped giving a serious effort when he talks about the match in his post-match interview.

Yes in modern sports were the early 30s are still the Current Gen (see basketball with Durant, Curry and LeBron in their 30s still being the best players, and Cristiano and Messi aged 33 winning the Ballon d'Or in football).
What generation you're a part of is determined by your date of birth, not your results and longevity.

The "Lost Gen" is just the nickname for those players born in the late 80s/early 90s. Thiem didn't suddenly leave that group just because he won a slam.

Please help draw the line and tell me it’s not arbitrary.

I think he had nothing left after the 5 set comeback vs Kyrgios. Dimitrov isn’t a good matchup for him as well. No crowd, no energy. He looked flat and uninspired. These things happen. Now if you wanna talk about disappointment Auger-Alissime was the biggest loss for me. After the beatdown he gave Shapovalov and then go up 2 sets to love vs the qualifier Karatsev and lose in 5? I’m sorry, that loss was worse.

ESPN commentators making excuses for Thiem by saying that when the crowd is against you, it takes out a lot of energy from you. So, they are saying that the pro-Krygios crowd in the previous round is the reason for his listless loss today. They should state that theory to Novak and ask him how he won 17 Slams with the crowd consistently against him in the later rounds of all his Slams. I had high hopes for Thiem becoming an ATG, but performances like today and the FO loss to Schwartzman are making me have a lot of doubts on his ceiling.

Is it too late to vote for Greg in three?
Lol there was not a single vote for Greg in three, all these shameless cheaters made their vote when it was obvious Dimitrov is winning in straights or when the match was over.

Only 5 experts knew DimiGOAT was going to win. @aditya123 @UnforcedTerror @James P @TheNachoMan @pj80. Kudos to you guys. (y)

Three losses in a row to GD on hard since Acapulco so no surprise, plus hot day and fast court

Becoming an ATG???

That's ridiculous!

If 4 ATGs emerged in these recent generations, then something would definitely be up about tennis! It would make absolutely no sense and would put everything into question.

Somebody is going to win a lot of Slams over the next five years from the current generation of young players. Thought Thiem might be one of them as he has got the game to win at the FO and USO where the court speed is slower.

The Kyrgios matches are overly stressful. I genuinely believe they contributed to Nadal's eventual losses at Wimbledon 2019 and AO 2020. When you have to expend that kind of mental and physical energy in the first week of a slam it is not a positive thing. Much healthier to build up gradually.

The winning of slams should more or less go back to mean or avg or in other words normal. Spread out among multiple players with one or two winning a little more than avg.

Having 3 ATGs in basically 1 generation is an aberration in itself, if another is to come along, that would be too suspicious for me! Kind of like the baseball season homerun record being broken here in the states by a string of players at one time. Everyone now knows PEDs had a lot to do with that...

We have three GOAT contenders with 17 or more Slams which is unusual and historic. But, most players with 5-6 Slams are considered ATGs typically and make it into the tennis Hall of Fame. I thought that Thiem had a good chance to reach that level of accomplishment. I have no expectations of seeing another 15 Slam winner anytime soon.

Oh OK, gotcha.

I can see him winning multiple too.

I mean there were a bunch in every decade in the open era, what makes you think now's different?

There were not a 'bunch' in every decade, that's ridiculous! Atg definition is different given what our 3 coGOATs have accomplished. I would think a 7, 8, slam minimum to even be considered now and on different surfaces.
The slam spread was much thinner, as in more diffuse, than the last two decades we've witnessed with 3 players able to get more than 15 a piece. I don't see that happening anymore any time soon, and if it does something is wrong!

Hmmm I thought Thiem would really pull this off and win. Guess he's much worse than I thought. Dimitrov didn't do anything special, wasn't playing that well.
