Dimitrov will never amount to anything

I keep wondering why people created galactic expectations and then whined when Dimitrov failed to meet them. There's no reason to think any particular player will be more than a journeyman. Why expect bigger things from Dimitrov?
There was a time and place far far away when there was tantalizing hope. I take you back to Brisbane and Melbourne in the land of Oz during their summer of 2017 and then flash forward to the srshsian empire of The Real Slam later that year and to foggy London Town a few months afterwards. It was The Age of Dimitrovious and it did indeed seem promising but mirages often fool the thirsty wanderers of the desert in a time known as the post-apocalyptic age of dinosaurs ruling the roost.

Flash back to rotterdam 2009 before he became a Fed poser. Adidas and the head prestige mid, taking Rafa to three sets.

I wanted to believe.

up until recently i used to think and hope he'd become something of a second wawrinka

a late career resurgence, complete mindset overhaul, improved big match player, etc.

then it hit me....

his groundgame and game overall has nowhere near the explosiveness and power of stanimal

his mains strengths are athleticism and speed, which just happen to be the things hit hardest when a player ages and declines

unless he somehow miraculously acquires a power groundgame, he's gonna decline HARD when his speed and footwork go down in a few years

heck, he might start losing to shapo, tsitsipas and FAA at the slams soon which will make me feel very embarrassed but what can you do

Gigor has had a great love life dating Bulgaria Playboy covergirl, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, that British singer and reality show talent judge and a ton of supermodels. He had a lot of distractions!

As soon as people 1st noticed Dimitrov on the tour, the expectations placed on him were so high that he had very little chance of ever meeting them. All that because he was billed as "Baby Fed" which I never really agreed with because aside from the fact that he has a rather aesthetically pleasing game and a one handed backhand like Federer, they couldn't be any more different. I'm pretty sure that the extra pressure he's had to deal with due to those ridiculous expectations got to him at some point. Even if he doesn't win a slam before he retires, I'd say he's had a very successful career regardless. When I look at his resume, I see 1 MS-1000, 1 YEC, a few 250/500 titles, ranked as high as #3, 3 slam SF, that's a career any professional player could only dream of. Sure if you go and compare him to the top 3 who've had GOAT type of career's, his achievements pale in comparison, but then again, who will measure up to those 3? Pretty much no one.

Going back to Miami, I wouldn't really make much of his loss to Thompson. He's been battling a shoulder injury since the AO, Miami is his 1st tournament since January so he'll probably need more match play to find his groove. He also went through a breakup with Nicole Scherzinger this winter which I'm sure affected him mentally. We're still early in the year, he has time to recover.

He surely had a lot of distraction and fun dating a lot of beautiful women (lucky guy!).... but I don't know if I'd call a string of failed relationships a great love life?

I was thinking this thread would be from 2013 or 14 or something, but... Nope. What a bold prediction to be making in 2019...

Poor Grigor and his millions. Yes, modeling his game on Federer didn’t help without the substance of the game and mentality to back it up. WTF win will unfortunately be the pinnacle of his achievement. Put him down alongside Corretja, Nalbandian and Davydenko.
