Do you think Federer gets back to #2 in the world?

Heading into Canada, Nadal is 485 points ahead of Federer.

If he fails to reach the finals, Federer will become #2 the Monday after the tournament.

Nadal has no ranking points to defend at Cincinnati. Federer has 600.

Nadal has 720 ranking points to defend at the U.S. Open. Federer has 180.

When does Cincinnati start??
Get me straight to it..
And if there's another fedal semifinal-setup at USO this year, like every slam this year, there is no advantage of ranking

The fact that no one did and you were forced to make this post shows the differences in the fan bases. ;)

If anything, it shows how annoyed I am whenever I see someone say "AGE EXCUSE" in regards to a Fed fan saying he isn't as good now as he was back in the 2000s. There is no "AGE EXCUSE" at all. Just explanations for how Djokovic didn't play as well prior to 2011 and how Federer didn't play as well after 2009.

EDIT: I guess I did sound a bit fanatical back there, though. Sorry about that.

I think this is pretty much a given tbh! I understand that in Canada Bull is kind of on his own against next gen to settle it and given his history at the tournament he seems to be heavy favorite, but that doesn't guarantee him title even if he plays good there! What if Tsitsipas steps up finally and beats Nadal this time to avenge his loss? What if Zverev finally stops choking and again defeats Nadal? And what about Thiem? I don't think that Nadal has as many chances to defend his 1000 points here in Canada as Federer has to defend his 600 in Cinci! First of all i don't think Novak will go all gun blazing in Cinci this year in order to focus on winning USO this year, which is way more important! So its not outside the realm of possibilities, that we see Novak exiting in early rounds of Cinci or in quarter-finals! And what does it leave Federer with? Bunch of likely choking servebots or mental midget mugs? Meh...Everybody knows, that when Federer's game is on in Cinci he is his own competition! (Djokovic won last year as Federer wasn't at his best and i admit that as Djole fan! But to Djole's credit he is the only player to play Federer multiple times there and take loss like a real man, instead of running away like a chicken by tanking matches early on...)
Given all the implications i'd say - yes! It is very very likely, that prior to US Open draw is revealed Federer will take over as world number two and thus guaranteed to be put in the opposite side of the draw from Djokovic!...

In other words, Nadal is defending 1720 through USO, Federer is defending 780 and Nadal is ahead by 485.

ie Nadal has to outperform Federer by 455 over Canada, Cincy, & USO to be number 2 after the USO.

The #2 ranking after the USO is almost a moot point, it's only a big deal before the USO draw. Nadal rarely plays a full schedule after September and may play nothing at all after LC. He's also getting married in the Fall, that might impact his schedule as well.

La Boda is his second priority for the Bull.

Will he complete the decade without ending a year at #1?
Did Djokovic do it the previous decade?
I'm waiting for somebody to say that Djokovic was too young and that he missed part of the 2000s decade just so I can yell "AGE EXCUSE" and feel proud of myself.

50/50

Its real close right now and could go either way before the USO. Then Fed has way more points to defend in the fall, but Rafa has more points to defend in Australia. Should be interesting. I certainly won't lose any sleep if he doesn't get back to 2.

Djokovic didn't end 8 years at no.2/3 in the previous decade.

True, but if Federer holds onto the ranking after the USO and ends the season with it, then it becomes huge for AO, that means he avoids Djokovic until the final at least in Melbourne.

That's a long, long way in the tennis future, and Fed has lots of points in Paris and the YEC to defend, Rafa zilch.

Djoker was in the previous decade braked celiac disease, which help him revealed dr. Četojević in 2010. After Novak began to follow a gluten-free diet, his physical condition improved and in the following year he became the world number one.
The guy's a complete joke, sorry.

The no.2 or no. 3 for Federer is no difference, especially for post US season. No.2 for Nadal might be a little valuable. not only for the draw, but also sit will contribute to his Top 2 week record.

Yeah, I'm surprised no one's mentioned the last part. I think if Nadal remains inside the top 2 'til the end of the season he'll surpass Federer's record, which would actually be really impressive when you think about it.

Yeah, comparing to Federer and Djock, Top 2 weeks and Consecutive Top 10 weeks are the very few records for Nadal to stand out among Big 3.

Record for just time at #2, or record for time combined at #1 or #2 (top 2). The latter would be really impressive.

He could end 2020 as No 1. It's very likely.

More like 50/50. His level has very noticeably dropped since the Australian Open. He won Wimby playing at 70% which is something he barely got away with this time. Unless he bounces back somehow, I think he could lose number 1 sometime in the summer of 2020, but given the recent failures of the next gen the opposite is also probable. If I'm mistaken you can come back and bump this post.

Or he goes to 80% and he beats everyone until Roland Garros.

What did I write wrong? That Novak passed (on the recommendation of dr. Četojevic) on a gluten-free diet and began to feel stronger and in a better form, Novak himself wrote in his book Serve to Win. Information about changing his diet can be found everywhere, so I don't understand your offensive reaction.

Just to remind.

What does Federer need in Cincy to get seed number 2 at the USO'19?

Will he regroup after this tough loss? I'm not sure he will. Beating Djokovic in that final would have meant a lot for his legacy. A lot more than two slams against Cilic.
