A year from now no one will remember or care about Olympics. It's just not a big deal in pro tennis. But it will be a big boost to Murray and Delpo, both of whom should go on to win multiple majors.

I guess you did not see Djokovic or Delpo crying........

I've no clue if you think an Olympics medal means nothing.

On CLAY.

Riiiiiiight !

It will be interesting for sure. Nadal with the opportunity to win 2 Olympic singles gold medals, on 2 different surfaces, in 2 consecutive attempts (out of 2 total attempts). Nadal will be 30 then, almost in the same position as Federer.

Shaping up to be a disappointing final...

Expected more out of Fed, despite the hurdle of trying to win Wimbledon and then Olympic Gold back-to-back at his age.

Still thought that Murray was a big enough question mark, that Fed would have been able to win at least a set.

This signals to me that Murray has truly learned from his past disappointments, and that he will truly be a force to be reckoned with, no matter who he has to face amongst the top 3, in the slams to come (and let's face it...winning a slam, still remains a huge question mark for Murray to overcome).

Just as follow-up to my own post...a 3-set loss for Fed would have been at least "mildly" less surprising, if at least one of the sets had made it to a tiebreak. Let's face it...Fed's performance in this final, when compared against how much emotional capital he has invested into repeatedly discussing the personal importance of winning the gold, and how much it means to him, shows that he has always had problems with playing his best, when a match is REALLY important to him...

Nadal still holds the record for least games allowing Federer to win in a best-of-5 final, at 4 games. Murray can come close, he's currently at 5 games.

what's interesting is now Murray will have won 2 olympic medals, maybe 2 golds, and beaten Djokovic and Federer in straights to do it in the singles which puts him above Nadal as an olympian. He also looks like beating Federer in straight sets on grass which Nadal has never done in 3 attempts  Also never been bagelled by Federer on grass like Nadal was and he's breadsticked Federer which nadal has never done

What are the implications regarding Nadal's grass ability?

Murray will probably choke in some way serving for the match. But that depends on if Federer can even hold next game.

Well if Murray does win he'll eclipse Miroslav Mecir:

Mecir: Lost 2 slam finals and wins an olympics

Murray: Lost 4 slam finals and wins an olympics

Well.. Fed got the bigger and more important match at wimbledon.. This shouldn't bother Fed to much anyways

TBH though Murray has been playing much better on this match than at W final, I don't think I've ever seen that kind of performance, ever. He was painting lines constantly, not missing shots at all. Fed just looked clueless and failed at no matter what he tried. Perfromance from another planet by Muzz.

Yeah Murray's Olympic resume is about to become the best of any active player.

Unless somehow he loses this match, which would shock me.

Which makes it even more odd ... Is the number of Masters events Murray has won, the number of times he's beaten DJoker and Fed at non-slam events, 2 gold Medals,, yet he's still SLAMLESS:shock:

I'm still not convinced it will be any different in the majors. The Olympics is more on Masters Series/Davis Cup level.

I think being best of 5 on grass against Federer will be a big help for him though.

Saying that, and I hope I don't get flamed by anyone for this... but I think Federer's feeling the effects of that semi final and his packed season. Not massively, but one of those small margins that makes a difference.

Murray's taking every opportunity though :) And what a wonderful crowd!

LOL! My non tennis mate is texting me every anti Federer message he can think of, I was expecting sympathy!
