Chair was sexist by letting Osaka win?

Serena calling Osaka a man?

Serena doing that to a minority female is both racist and sexist. Awful person.
Just because Osaka is a tall girl doesn't mean she's a man. Serena is just sexist. And also a racist and I don't care that she's black too. Osaka is also asian so that has to count for something. Does Serena hate sushi? What a hater racist.

There were 2 women on that court, how could it be sexism if the umpire only called penalties on Serena? Using that word to describe every slight you encounter just makes it harder to prove actual misogyny in action. Not everything that happens to a woman is because of sexism.

I'm a raging feminist and this stuff doesn't help.

It wasn't sexist from a competition stand point. I just don't feel like a man would've been treated like that. I feel the same way about the alize cornet situation. But I could be wrong.

Either way, the better player won today. It didn't affect the competitive outcome at all.

Osaka kicked her butt. I'm still shocked.

She called him a liar and a thief. That's way over the line, and I've never heard any heated exchange reach that point where you're saying the the umpire is dishonest, basically insulting them.

And hang on if it's sexism, you need to show other examples of where Ramos has been stricter with female players vs male ones. You can't just cite this example and say it's because she's a woman.

Dont forget also her telling him that she would make sure he would never ever ref again on her matches... clearly indicating possible fixing of umpires and/or threatening him to have an influence on the outcomes of his possible umpire matches

Reverse sexism in its purest form.

GTFO with your passive aggressive s**t, Serena.
No such thing as reverse sexism. It’s just sexism.

Men and women can both be oppressors and victims of sexism.

The result isn't tainted. That's true. But it is still sad for Osaka that the atmosphere was tainted, as she couldn't celebrate the moment as she would have liked to be able to do.

Love your work. :D
Werk?
I am offended. Perfeshinally offended.
Man, i am just out here tryna git it done. Tryna express my truths. So, i am not reel gud at spelleng. You making fun of me is NOT OKAY! I went to gradskool at stanfderd...for spelleng dammet!
Ugh. Need some kumfert food and a safe space. And i need to selfmedakate. And i need headphones and a ipod full of Beyoncé.

Tennis died a little bit today.

It's never cool to see a player "booed" or cheers when a player misses a first serve for example. I can't speak for everyone but I guess no fan likes it, even when it's for their favorite player.
What we saw today went too far: booing in the trophy cerimony when a 20 year old girl is having the moment of her life is not the same as celebrating someone's double fault and that's why I think it's being said a lot more.

I think for the most part the crowd boooing for the umpire and USTA. Probably.
But this is less than what Martina received when she lost to Steffi just because she did underhand serve.

Serena did a good job on her speech tho.
So I've gotta hand it to French crowd as the worst.

But, that is today's mantra and teaching in society. Spin your faults and bad behavior by blaming others.

Think of all the times Nadal and co have done on court coaching and gotten away with it and then look at today... funny that.

Not condoning what she did but she’s got a point, higher standards for women than the men.
Lets assume Nadal takes on court coaching and umpire warned him.Did you seriously believe Nadal got crazy because off that ?? I always say Serena needs threapy. She doesnt even know how to make proper argument.

Actually this is why men and women have a hard time understanding each other. We see so many things differently and interrupt them differently.

Je suis Americain. And having been to RG, Bercy, MSG, et Flusheeng... I will honestly say...
The French crowd is equally difficult, but much smarter. They can handle their controversy and their cabernet better than wealthy tennis fanz in America.

I was super impressed with how Osaka was able to stave off break point after break point. Even going back to the Keys match. Mad respect to her
Absolutely but it was her mental toughness that shocked me the most. That 2nd set was absolute chaos and she was ice. I was so impressed.

To be honest, I don't care who they were booing at. Osaka's going to think it was because they wanted Williams to win. She even said as much in her winning speech.

They ruined her first grand slam victory. They booed during her ceremony. There should have been more claps.

For all this talk about the greatest athlete of all time (nike talk, at least)... this is very disappointing. It does remind me of the final she lost against Kim Clijters.

That's not the main issue, it's not that uncommon for players to insult umpires but that she didn't want to let the issue go for so long and keep demanding he apologizes to her. She was basically daring him to penalize her.

Booing or jeering is utterly classless. Doesn't matter if your favourite is losing - the opponent is a human being who is working hard and trying their best to achieve their own goals, and deserves respect for their game.
I attend a lot of tennis matches and I have never once booed in my life. When Federer was getting owned by Nadal at the Australian Open in 2014 I was still applauding Rafa, especially on his great shots. I nearly always applaud both players.

What is difficult about this? They're playing to achieve their own goals but also for you - the spectators and fans who have just paid likely hundreds of dollars to watch two professionals entertain them?
Why do you want to insult them and make them feel bad for showing up, or having the temerity to win?

It's disgusting.

@NaomiKonjuhPotapova sorry, forgot to quote

Oh, definitely it was for the umpire and for the USTA, sorry if my comment made it look like the crowd was booing Osaka. But it really ruined her moment and the umpire wasn't even there so still not fair.
Yeah, I was glad to see Serena speech being all about Naomi but not a fan of the "let's see" joke about her playing the US Open again lol.

Step back from it.

This is all smoke and heat. The issue of whether or not men are treated differently in general matters not to how the umpire and players handled this game. Clearly to be an umpire in the final means one is an excellent and experienced umpire.

In this case, the umpire applied the rules to a prima donna.

he arbitrarily applied the rules.

how much you want to bet there aren't at least scores of examples of him taking far more guff from male players.

that's not the point. Did Ramos go too far with Game penalty ? that is the question. Did Ramos Ego try to play a role in the US open final ?

No. Especially after she threatened Ramos stating that she would make sure he would not ever ref a match of her again and that he would regret it. I see veryone talking about the thief part but hasn't anyone see/heard this part?

I never understood why she gets so much hate. There have been hate threads about her where I couldn't agree with the OPs. Not on this occasion!

She talks and behaves like she leads the entire army of fans who only come to see and cheer for her. I am not sure I have seen a more arrogant player than her in tennis.

He should have told her that was out of line. It was.
But in America, we like our goddesses to be fiesty. Men are weak. Authority sux. Adults be stupid. Who run this mutha?

As has become the case with most controversies, we have made it a choice between two extremes. Some say Serena did absolutely nothing wrong and is a hero for standing up to the chair umpire and calling him a thief.

The other side says takes joy in pointing out that the umpire acted within the rules and say that Serena deserved the consequences. There was absolutely nothing dubious about the chair's decision.

Clearly, the truth is in the middle of these extremes. Each warning against Serena was technically legitimate, and she should not have called the umpire a thief. On the other hand, it would have been best if the umpire had used a little discretion and not issued a game penalty. Thief is not such a vulgar term that he couldn't have chosen to withhold the penalty.

Serena was not blameless or heroic for yelling at the umpire, but that doesn't mean he made the best possible decision, either.

We've seen zverev call an umpire a f**king moron and we've seen Djokovic saying something about f**k your mother in Serbian yet because serena calls the umpire a thief she gets a game penalty?

I won't disagree on Serena not being calm enough in that situation though. She completely lost the plot and I got fed up with it as well.

But Ramos was too trigger happy on the violations especially in a GS final.
