Is parity good or bad?

Lots of people say the 90s were a strong era bc of how many guys had won Slams.

So is this a new strong era where a new crop of players are taking out/taking over from the big guys, but can lose to 'lesser' players on any given day?

I think the stronger era is the one where you see the three greatest players in history occupying all but one semifinal berth...but that's just me

Nothing wrong with a bit of parity if there is consistency at the top. But IW isn't it.

Plus, the ngbs have made losing embarrassing.

This and Miami definetly reminds of the late 90s era.

Woodruff, Ferreira, Pavel, Grosjean, Canas, Mantilla. Norman, Enqvist, Corretja, Pioline were higher level guys but still in the same mold of also rans.

Can't wait for Paris with such previous champions as Sock, Khachanov, Henman, Berdych and Tsonga. I'm sure it will be a hoot.

Actually Tsonga, Karen and Henman played good in their tournament win.
I remember Henman taking down Fed, Roddick and Grosjean in that master tournament

Strightaway with the post of @BGod and @Rosstour I knew how many people were watching tennis from some time back.
That is how the 90s were, now think how much 90s is romanticized on this site by saying depth was bigger with new winner.
I always said I loved the big three on the top, we need great tennis not depth.
And people were praising WTA winner out of nowhere some time back.
Enjoy please, don't give excuse

It's hard to say if they played good in relative terms to how serious the top contenders were taking it. I of course had to look up the draw and not surprisingly Fed played a war against Verkerk so cannot give much credit to Henman there and Roddick was in a high after winning USO and it was a close match, sometimes that just happens. Then he got Pavel in the final. I mean I didn't watch any of these matches but it's not like a Nalbandian Shanghai type draw exactly. Karen and Tsonga no, just good enough form in a tired field. I know he beat Novak I think but late in the year and that was about his peak window where he was dangerous. His run in Toronto was far more impressive. My point being Paris has always been quite weak and propped up mainly by big names ultimately winning like Novak and Safin but that tournament constantly has a lot of skips or tired players showing up just before WTF to get more points or practice but not giving their all because WTF just pays more for less.

From my point of view, it's just that Canada in particular has been a secondary Masters tournament, so it was always primed for more upsets or unexpected runs. Like the year we had Raonic and Pospisil meet for the SF it was wild locally but in the grand scheme made the tournament look weak. But then we had Nadal and Murray win it a lot. Anywho, surface specialists definitely made sense more pre-social media. Now with global advertising, players get more practice and are inclined for marketing purposes to put forth more effort everywhere. Now also in a transitional era, there are going to be some black holes. The transitional era wasn't the 90s in general though, we're talking 2001-2003 for that.

And some time back Ljubicic win( that was indeed great win for him as he lost Madrid and Paris finals some year back) was celebrated on this very site, how Norrie and Bash winning will make it bad, I don't know

and yet the "right person" won Toronto this year; the number two in the world Daniil Medvedev who could have also won the Cincy had the American media outlet camera not defeated him there.

Maybe I want zero depth and 3-4 greats who are consistent.

Vika is a multiple slam winner and has won Indian wells twice before, so I’d say her making the final is a bit more believable. She also got to the USO final last year. Badosa also had some good results and wins this year. There was no barty or Osaka or sabalenka in the tournament so…

All things considered I’d say the 26 Vs 36 is SLIGHTLY more sane.

In the 90s there were a lot of consistent players, now there are none, although Zverev and Med have showed some signs the last year. It really hasnt been a consistent player sinse Djokovic, which is a whole other scenario than the 90s imo. I would actually say current field is the opposite of the 90s.

This argument about depth would have something to it if we didn’t already know how bad both of these, and others, actually are in front of decent opposition.

For me I just miss having someone to root for that could deliver or I could expect to have fun following their matches. All the new guys I like aren't doing anything and it's been that way for too long :notworthy: obviously it's a crazy standard, but backing Rafa or the other big 3, they gave you a lot of rewards for being their fan, you basically could expect epic wins lol. The most I get from Dibaego are instagram posts saying "A octavos!!" with a cute pic, before his usual semifinal loss.

I get you man but we have to move on because times are changing and the sun will soon set on the old guard.The other option will be to quit watching tennis but as far as I am concerned, I don't want to :D
