Stefanos Tsitsipas has the potential to be a BETTER player than Roger Federer

Tsi has more power, but lacks Fed's agility. That's where his size works against him. His game will just never be as subtle and skillful. It's relatively easy to put down Federer's contemporaries, but the level of their talent/health/dedication, as low or high as it was, surely didn't warrant just about anyone could attain the aura of invincibility Federer did, toying with them ever since the late 03 / early 04. Federer's precision, variety, movement, timing, it was unreal. It's taken for granted now, but it was jaw dropping in 2004/05/06. Just as I was watching it, I was pretty sure I had never seen anyone play at that level before.

I'm not saying Stefanos is not amazing, but he doesn't make me think we're seeing Federer supercharged or anything.

Tsi has more power...
His serve isn't anywhere as powerful as Fed's (even at age 39) and Fed has the greatest FH in the history of tennis. The fastest FH the Greek has ever hit in his lifetime is what an average Fed FH was like before the racket change in 2013. Tsitsipas has totally average power. Powerful plays with velocity on their strokes are guys like Nalby, Safin, Basilashvilli or Lion. Tsistipas isn't even in the discussion in terms of power.

Tsitsipas makes too many errors on his BH under pressure. He falls away from the direction of the ball in his serve follow through also. Those are two big technique improvements that are needed before he can dream of winning multiple Slams. If you have technique weaknesses, they leak errors under stress late in close matches and then it affects your mental confidence and self-belief. The Big 3 are in general mentally tough because they have close to textbook technique and they all corrected their major weaknesses within a few years of making it on tour.

The OP should be stripped of his name for such a bad “tennis analysis“ which could be amongst the worst postings of the year.

It's not even about power. I think Tsitsipas has the power, but he lacks the crucial ability to know when to pull the trigger. His tennis IQ is not elite.

Yes surely a better potential to exceed choking standards of federer. Already has some gems like Us open 2020, Rome 2021 to name a few

Tsi's serve speed average in the matches collected from 17 to 19:

110.4

Fed's:

108.8

The gap between them is only slightly narrower than the gap between Federer and Nadal, and wider than the one between Tsi and Del Potro.

If we trim it down to 1st serve speed only, which people mostly mean when talking about speed, it gets wider:

Tsi:

119.8

Fed:

115.7

There I said it. I watched Federer since the beginning and I’ve been watching Tsitsipas for the last 4-5 years and I can tell you the Greek has a higher ceiling than the Swiss. He's a very special talent. For starters, I think Tsitsipas is a better baseliner and mentally stronger when compared to Federer. Yes I’m aware of what happened in USO 2020 so don’t bother mentioning it, cause it happens, and I’ve seen enough of Tsitsipas to know he’s one tough motherf*cker. Even Federer himself admitted the guy is tough as nails after struggling against him and losing the two biggest encounters between them.

I have no doubt he’ll achieve great things in the future; however, I don’t think he’ll have the same success Federer had. Tsitsipas’s generation is way more talented than Federer’s generation so unfortunately for him, he won’t have Federer’s luxury as the competition will be fierce. Roddick, Hewitt and Baghadatis are really nothing compared to Medveved, Sinner, Zverev and Thiem. Besides, Tsitsipas seems like a guy who has other interests in life than to keep hitting a ball until he’s 45 years old like Federer. Anyways, that’s not the point.

The point is I believe The Greek God has what it takes to take Federer’s game to the next level. He'll be performing and playing tennis at a higher level. That he’ll do should he put in the effort. His backhand and RoS still leave a lot to be desired and not at Fed’s level yet but he’ll get there. Federer kept improving even in his 30s so Stefanos has a lot of time ahead of him to improve.

One more thing, I’m not sure of this but I can see him becoming even a more popular player than Federer in the future. Two reasons, he’s better looking and more active in the social media, all what’s left is success which is coming his way soon!

Fed's power is one of the most underrated parts of his game. He can crank up the pace big time on the serve and FH when he's comfortable. I don't have the stats but I'd imagine his rally ball speeds in his prime must've higher than any of the other big 4. The kinetic chain on his strokes allows him to get incredible racquet head speed and inject serious pace.

I don't think Tsitsi has more power. Fed was known for his fearhand back then. Stefanos doesn't have such a weapon.

Tsitsi has potential to be a slam winner for sure but to dominate like Fed is a big call, has he got the potential to be an ATG for sure. I think we will see a lot of competition when Djokdal decline a bit more, in terms of slams split amongst Med, sinner, Zverev, thiem and Tsitsi, will be interesting if anyone pulls away out of the pack...

Tsistipas having more average pop off the serve is a little deceptive when Fed rarely hits his serve as big as he can, opting for placement above anything else. That's just one area as well, Federer's racket head speed is in another dimension compared to Tsitispas so in terms of generating pace and spin Federer is cut above for sure.

Federer's FH was monstrous, his BH had 10 times the variety, he had a stronger serve, surer return game and was a much better net player, and better footwork.

Tsitsipas has the better BH topspin, nothing else.

Man, even that's highly debatable. And I'm not someone who holds Fed's topspin BH in particularly high regard. I'm not sure **** even gets as much RPMs as Fed did off that wing.

Tsitsipas has a very long way to go before he matches Federer in any metric

suppose he finally managed to hit a few successful drop shots against ND but graceful it ain’t

If Tsisipas should do anything to approach Federer's career accomplishments, there would be 2 things he should be thankful for: a) there's no clay king stopping him at every RG; and b) there's no HC/grass prince stopping him at almost every AO and Wimbledon!

Obviously I don't think Tsitsipas has a higher ceiling than Federer, but I do think he has more power off both wings. Where Federer has the edge is in precision and timing. An 80 mph, ~2700 RPM forehand struck early that lands within 2 feet of the sideline is better than an 83 mph, ~3000 RPM forehand struck normally that lands 2+ feet away from the sideline.

Tsitsipas also has a more powerful serve. He can hit 135 mph pretty effortlessly these days, though he doesn't do it often. Federer, on the other hand, never hit 135 with any regularity. But again, precision is king. I actually think Tsitsipas' serve is pretty underrated now even in terms of precision, because we haven't yet adjusted our opinion of it to reflect his recent improvements. I believe he can approach Federer's overall effectiveness as a server, but he still has work to do.

This is the funny thing - Tsits is going to have DRAMATICALLY easier competition than Federer who faced a murder’s row at every slam from 2011 on.... Despite that Tsits isn’t going to come close to 20 slams. Conversely if you dropped 22 year old Federer into 2021 he’d probably win 30+ slams.

SonnyT

If 22 year old Federer came up with 12-13 years older Nadal and Djokovic guarding the Slams, would he be doing any better than Tsisipas now? I doubt it!

Federer is better than Tsisipas talent-wise, but Tsisispas is stronger mentally than Federer. And that's the case with both Nadal and Djokovic!

Sorry, the idea that Tsitsipas hits bigger forehands than prime Federer is goddamn ridiculous.

Could be, but then again, there are people that won't have you ever saying anyone has more anything than Rog. You say Djoker has more hair? Hah! They'll come back with the explanation why you're deluded and misled (Roger has a bigger head; even though he has as much hair as Djok or even more, it looks so sparse because of his gigantic, unparalleled superhead that only masterfully pretends to be a lot balder than Djoker's).

Meh, Federer did have possibly the greatest FH ever, even just for sheer power it took bazookas like del Potro's to be bigger. He couldn't have had the best everything, if he did no one would ever come close to his achievements, how about 30+ slams lol.
