Nadal: "I didn't have the great feelings I had the other days. You will not make him miss with the speed of the ball, you need to put him out of position. I didn't hit the ball clean enough to take him out of his comfort zone"

I had picked Fed in 4. But the # of votes for Nadal in 4 was ridiculous.

I gave Nadal the nod in what I expected to be a close one because I wasn't sure about the bounce. The grass is slow and is said to still be low bouncing, but I wasn't sure about it. I think if Federer did as well as he did in the rallies today, then the court must still be low (or lowish) bouncing.

This is still a great run for Nadal. After all those years of losing early at W, he is finally back in the mix with 2 SFs in a row and looks a lot more like a legit contender.
I hope he can keep it up for a few more years.

I mean his resurgence on grass aligns perfectly with when that statistician's numbers suggest the grass was drastically slowed (again).

Sure Nadal did well to make the semis, but I think he loses to Nick in the 2R if the grass was still like 2014.

Really? I thought he'd lose today but he played at his best level since Shanghai 2017. RBA won a set against Djoker, but you think Novak will "kill" him on Sunday?
Depends on what we consider a killing. Did he kill him in 2015? Because Fed kept it close for the first half, but after that it was one-way traffic.

Slow and low was what many called within the first week. Kyrgios and Querrey serve were bouncing pretty high which played into Nadal’s strength. Fed had his share of high bouncing serves.

Fraudulent victory. Just like last year. BYE

I don't know. I'm not into all this speed debate. I'm just glad Nadal is having deep runs again. A lot more noble to lose against Fedovic than vs Darcis types

Second serve percentage stats is telling.

Second Serve pct points won. Despite Google stats displaying this & not the quoted post.

Nadal 52%
Federer 64%

This stat really reinforces that Fed out base-lined Rafa today . It gives us hope that Fraud will put up a good fight vs Djoker.

p.s , why are winners/unforced error stats so hard to come by? You'd think the official slam websites would follow such vanilla stats of w/ue?

Edit. they do , it must be 4am with lack of sleep plus a Fraud win over Nads that has gotten to me :D

What's the thought process behind such a risky strategy?

I thought it was brilliant that he did that. If he didn't do that, I think he loses that match.

Nadal was absolutely redlining his level at that point. Federer knew it. At that point, he had a choice... sacrifice his mental state and body... just to lose the set 6-4. Or take a mental break... recover... and serve first and be fresh in the third set. That is honestly the most humble, non-stubborn, and accepting of his limitations that I've ever seen Federer be in his career.

I have never seen Federer say to himself, "I cannot win this set no matter what I do. I will save myself and come roaring out in the next set."

That is huge for Federer. Quite honestly, he should have had this mentality a few years ago... but it's better late than never, I guess.

I'm certain it is. Most of the balls were at his strike zone, around waist level in contrast to RG where it often was chest level. So much of their matchup has to do with court geometry, always has. With speed taken out of the equation they seem to dominate their preferred surfaces.

The Djoko matchup is difficult in gemoetry terms because while Nadal probably does not love bending his knees so low on the grass, while Federer's long arms lets him bend down less... Djokovic on the other hand is very flexible in the joints, he probably doesnt mind near as much the low bounce.

That fraud is in his 12 Wimbledon final. By the way that has been the problem with Federer against Djokovic. Winning points on the second serve. That has been the story the last two times they met in the Wimbledon final.

Bit off topic but what is your general and loose prediction for Aliassime's future on tour?
Honestly, I've elected to just go along for the ride at this point in regards to FAA. No expectations, so I don't really have a prediction. Gun to my head, though? General and loose prediction? I'd say a Hewtt/Roddick/Safin/Ferrero type career. Consistently at the top, or at least among the top players, for a long period of time, with 1-3 majors to go with it and a handful of M 1000's. He could accomplish a lot more than that though if his current trajectory is anything to go by.

Good match. Kudos to fed. Would have been really interesting to see what would have happened if Nadal converted that one break point where he had a realistic chance. Amazing match point save points.

That's absolutely fair. I'm pretty confident he'll win Slams, and I'd suggest more than 1-3. But there are so many rising talents right now, and how it all shakes out well, who knows? There's only so much room at the top. Felix has some serious things going for him though, and at the top of the list is athleticism and work ethic. It's hard to imagine he wouldn't make the most of what he's been gifted with unless a tragedy strikes such as severe injuries. There's a very good crop coming through IMO, they just need time and we the fans need to be more patient. Lots of players in their late teens and early 20s who could be beasts in 3-5 years time. Likely only a couple of those will convert the high end of such promise - Aliassime is well placed to be one of them.

Big fat LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL at anybody who thought Nadal has a chance. His mentality is soooooooooo overrated. He was leading with a minibreak twice, and I never had doubt he will still lose. Such a terrible mentality against Federer and Djokovic outside of clay since this AO 2014. He is never winning another non RG slam again unless his toughest opponent is somebody like Anderson.
He can always hope for a 2017 USO type draw. If it happened once, it can happen twice...

To be fair, it looked that way. Not so much slow, but certainly low bouncing.

At least on Sunday we want have to watch a serve ball bounce of 14 times per serve. Novak and Nadal need to cut it down. Nadal was slow as usual today, seldom within the 20 seconds allotted. Missed the Novak match, he averages 14 bounce per serve. Referees need to enforce the time rule. The retrievers are resting, like Nadal used to with 1 minute rest between points.

For an old guy, Roger has a great game. No slow downs on his part. Just brain freeze in the 4 with challenge on serve, much could have been over earlier. Nadal had a sweet draw for number 2, played 1 player in the top 40 all the way to the semi's. A Serena like draw.

I really can't get over the sensibility of this post, lol! What you just said is what I've been trying to preach to certain folks here....to no avail. No such thing as patience here.

Pretty awesome that we've had the chance to see these guys play eachother at two majors this year on their best surfaces in likely the twighlights of their careers but yet still in great form. Could we possibly get our first US Open meeting?

Don’t tease us like that! Honestly, it would be crazy for it to come so late in their careers.

If only Fed could get Thiem/Anderson instead of Djokovic in the final. A bit unfair how he has to beat both Djokodal at nearly 38 to win this slam while Djokodal have had easy slam wins since USO last year.

Swings both ways though. If Fed beat Anderson here last year, he’s the one potentially waiting for the tired winner of the Djokodal match.

I didn't expect Federer to dictate everything from the baseline. He played well on the ground but it was still frustrating to see the serve gets neutralized by how slow this surface was.

What is it with tennis today. Lets make all the surfaces "neutral". Watch a grass court match 20 years ago... or a USO. Super fast.. low bouncing. All the event play pretty much the same.
